3. Each of the three sessions covers key approaches
and concepts for analysing biological data
1. Exploring
data
2. Testing for
differences
3. Testing for
relationships
4. How will
you be
taught?
First listen to the pre-recorded lecture - the workshop is to learn how to
apply the statistical approaches, not to learn about them. I will take a register
of who has listened in advance. You will be marked as absent if not!
In the workshop tutors will reinforce the principles of the lecture by showing
you how to carry out the statistic approaches you have learnt about in
theory.
Bring along any questions you have on the lecture to those sessions. Pre-
recorded lectures means that we can spend more time in the taught session
on practical skills. But we are still keen for you to ask questions!
We also find that students prefer pre-recorded lectures on more complex
topics, since it gives the opportunity to learn at your own pace.
These lectures are recorded new each year to include the most up to date
approaches.
5. CW1 Data
Analysis
Portfolio :
Key Dates
Three sections (based on each class)
released weekly on Fridayâs at 2pm
We strongly recommend you complete
each section per week
Deadline for submission: 18th November
2022, 8pm
Submit as one document on Turnitin
Marks and feedback due: 16th December
via comments on Turnitin
6. How to
access the
portfolio
sections
Download from the assessment folder
(statistics portfolio)
Each of the three sections is downloaded
from tests so that we can randomize them
Submit as ONE document via Turnitin and
by the deadline
Do not submit on BB tests!!!!
7. What should
be in each
portfolio
section?
Rationale: A short narrative of why particular techniques (i.e. test or
graph) were selected and the steps you took to get to the final
analysis (3-10 sentences).
Interpretation: A short write up of graphs and/or analysis in the
format required for the results section of a scientific paper. Not sure
how? Use your notes, lectures, and model answers to the post-class
exercises to help you.
R Code and output: Include all code that is used for the
analyses/graphs etc. You can cut and paste directly from the console
in R studio. Do not include unused code/output or codes that
generated errors. If you do, it will be taken as an indication that you
do not understand which line of code generated the outputs
included and you will lose marks.
8. How should
you format
the portfolio?
âą Please start each section on a new page
âą Rationale, Interpretation and R Code/Output
clearly marked as sub headers.
âą You must number the pages
âą Include your student number and name at
the top of the first page.
âą All documents should be submitted in Word,
not a PDF or other word pressing software.
âą All students have free access to Word
software (contact learning services for
details).
9. How will it
be marked?
Marks allocated to each section will be found on the
question. In general one marks is allocated to:
a specific point being made in rational
an element of the write up that is required in interpretation
a line of code & itâs output (marked together since you canât
have one without the other!) in r code and output. Longer
pieces of code may have several marks attributed to them.
