3. Advertising is how a company encourages people to buy
their products, services or ideas. An advertisement (or "ad"
for short) is anything that draws good attention towards
these things. It is usually designed by an identified sponsor,
and performed through a variety of media. Ads appear on
television, as well as radio, newspapers, magazines and as
billboards in streets and cities. They try to get people to buy
their products, by showing them the good rather than bad of
their products.
4. Advertising happens in many different ways. Many products
are advertised on television, although not all channels
permit advertising. The advertisements usually appear
during breaks between a television show. They are usually
for products, other television shows or movies and are not
normally much longer than 30 seconds. Some radio stations
have audio advertisements that play between programmes.
An advertisement for a movie is called a trailer. It shows a
short collection of clips from the movie, and shows the date
it will be released in cinemas.
Advertising also takes place on websites. These may appear
as "banner ads" or "popup". They are often still images or
flash animations. The owner of the website will get money
when a user clicks on the advertisement. Sometimes they
will get a percentage of the money if they buy a product.
5. Advertisers use many different techniques to get people to
notice their adverts, often using deliberately shocking or
provocative images. Sex is also often used by advertisers in
this way. Once they have managed to make people notice
their advert, they need to 'sell' the product or brand. They
may try to make the product look appealing, however often
advertisers use humour to get people to remember the
brand without actually promoting the product. Poor adverts
can damage sales or spoil a brands identity.
6. Advertising is often strictly regulated, for instance in the
United Kingdom it is illegal to advertise tobacco, except in
the shop where it is sold and this is also restricted. In France
it is illegal to advertise alcohol, meaning that when many
European football teams play in France, they cannot play in
their usual shirts as breweries often advertise on sports
shirts. It is also illegal to advertise on some television
channels, the BBC in the United Kingdom and RTE in the
Republic of Ireland are not allowed to permit advertising
and instead make their revenue from selling a compulsory
television license.
7. Advertising is at the front of delivering the proper message
to customers and prospective customers. The purpose of
advertising is to convince customers that a company's
services or products are the best, enhance the image of the
company, point out and create a need for products or
services, demonstrate new uses for established products,
announce new products and programs, reinforce the
salespeople's individual messages, draw customers to the
business, and to hold existing customers.
8. Sales promotions are another way to advertise. Sales
promotions are double purposed because they are used
to gather information about what type of customers one
draws in and where they are, and to jumpstart sales.
Sales promotions include things like contests and games,
sweepstakes, product giveaways, samples coupons,
loyalty programs, and discounts. The ultimate goal of
sales promotions is to stimulate potential customers to
action.
11. Task 1 (page No.62)
What is the main idea sold here ?
12. "Stay unfair, stay beautiful," is Nandita's message for women on
International Women's Day. Says Nandita "From the time I came
into the public domain and have been written about, 9 out of 10
articles start by describing me as being dusky or earthy. A reference
to the color of my skin does not escape the best of journalists." In
her blog Nandita writes, "Whenever I interact with college students,
especially young girls, I invariably get a question to the effect, "How
come you are so confident despite being dark?" It took me some
time to understand its ramifications in its entirety, but when I went
deeper, I realized how inadequate so many young girls felt purely
because they could not live up to the societal standards of beauty.
Every film and women's magazine told them how ugly they were. It
made their personalities shy, hesitant, insecure, and not good
enough. I grappled with how to make them understand the
worthlessness of this pursuit as I took my confidence for granted."
13. Task 2
What response does this
evoke in you as a reader ?
14. There are several details about the water in this advertisement
that help to convey its message. Water drips into a puddle for no
apparent reason. This represents waste. The fact that the goldfish's
bowl is already more than halfway drained represents the amount
of water the audience has already wasted. This setup elicits a
feeling of desperation within the viewer. So much water has
already been wasted, and soon there won't be much left for the
goldfish (representing all innocence in the world).
Overall, I believe this advertisement effectively convinces the
viewer to, at the very least, consider his or her water usage,
therefore achieving its purpose
16. Don’t talk while
she drives
This ad gets a strong message across in a graphic way. The blood
spatter draws the viewer in and shows them that it is coming from the
telephone, leading them to picture something gruesome happening to
whoever the man is talking to. And then the quote puts it all together
that you shouldn't be on the phone while driving.
17. Some Things
Are Not What
They Seem:
Internet Date
The art direction and illustration in this ad is fantastic, it gives us two
separate pictures that are each on a different spectrum and blends
them together through a common value which in this case is the
internet. The idea is once again simple and not too complicated, and it
gets its point across that the Internet is sometimes dangerous so
protect yourself.
18. Band Aid: Hulk
Band Aid is showing just how flexible its fabric is in this add. This
amusing ad shows that this band-aid does not even snap on the finger
of The Hulk who is at the center of this image. It works because it’s
simple and it shows you all that is needed and nothing more, its
flexible, so buy it!
19. Drive safe
Like stated earlier, ads can give off strong messages as well. In this
ad we see a damaged human leg, but instead of bones and blood
it looks more like a crashed car. This clever message shows us just
what its quote says, "...Car accidents don't just happen to cars".
20. We Get Scared…
This ad powerfully brings home the effect that drug taking parents
can have on their children, casting the issue from the perspective of
the kids. Once again it’s stressing the message that it is not only the
users who are affected by drugs, but their families and communities
as well.
21. Verbal abuse
can be just as
horrific…………
The above depicts us a valuable message,
one’s talking is much powerful than a most
powerful punch given to his /her face…..
