The Impact of Social Media
• A study conducted by Nielson Wire in June,
2010 showed that social networking accounts
for 22.7% of all online activity in the U.S.
(Higher than gaming by more than 10%)
• According to Twitter Blog, today there are
more than 50 million tweets per day/with an
average of 600 tweets per second. (In 2007
there was an average of 5,000 tweets per
day.)
Social Media - Make it Personal
• Start Strong: Twitter users w/bio have 8x the
followers than those without.
• Be interesting, show us your personality.
• Be authentic. (Martha Stewart)
• Build relationships/Build a strong following.
• Cross promote in person when possible.
• Engage and stay current.

Common Mistakes
• Using a generic or uninteresting bio.
• Using a ghost tweeter/new kid or low level
employee to manage profile.
• Overfollowing – keep it manageable or you
will lose the “social” aspect.
• Do NOT Auto-DM or Auto Follow!

• Tweet with your brand in mind
• Mind your manners
• Be responsive
• Link to online sites/blog posts/upload
photos
• Retweet often
• Start a contest/poll/promotion, etc.
• Ask & answer questions

Common Mistakes
• Avoid providing TMI
• Emotion is hard to convey
• If you cannot make your point fully in 140
characters, then you need to write a blog
post instead
• Proceed with caution: written word can by
easily misconstrued
