Why manage your references ?
• When you begin your research, it´s important to record the details of
all the information you find
• You will need these details for accurate referencing, and it will enable
you to locate the information again later
• Reference management software allows you to manage all the
references you need for your papers, reports, essays or thesis
• Keep them in your own personal database or library
– Searching / retrieving a particular reference
– print or save a list of references
– insert citations into your document and automatically produce a
bibliography in whatever style you require

Formality in academic writing
• Academic writing is expected to be precise, semi-formal, impersonal, and
objective
• Parts of a paper
– Titel
– Abstract
– Introduction
– Methods
– Results
– Discussion
– Conclusion
– Bibliography
• Standing on the shoulders of Giants
- therefore documentation and citation is important

Question
Mendeley or
RefWorks output
styles when
writing and citing
10. DTU Library, Technical University of Denmark
Ask yourself this ?
• Is building and maintaining a reference database going to
help you get organised?
• Will you benefit from learning how to use a tool like
Mendeley or RefWorks?
• Will it be easier in your work / your research to keep
track of your references
- including writing and citing !
•Only you can decide what will work for you

One specific question
It would be nice to have a
discussion on LaTeX/BibTeX
integration of Mendeley, as this has
always been the area where
Mendeley performed fairly badly,
even though this is probably one of
the top 1-3 priorities for almost all
serious academic writers.

And the extra bonus info I promised ....
• As a DTU Student, Ph.D. Student or employee at DTU you need to login
correct, in order to access licensed materials from Elsevier/Sciencedirect,
Springer, IEEE, ACM ..
You name it, DTU Library got it, hopefully ;-)
• Sometimes you meet these ressources without going through DTU Findit
• If so fill in ..globalproxy.cvt.dk after the base URL, and you will be
promted with your DTU login, and access to full text is provided if it´s a
part of our subscription..
E.g.
