Personal Development through Film Making
OCN Level 1 Award in Progression (QCF)
isore Media CIC would like to present our proposal to deliver the following
programmes
 8 week Media and Soft Skills course
 4 week Preparation for Employment workshops
OCN Accredited course - Personal Development through Film Making
Weeks 1 to 8 – Media & Soft Skills Training
Evidence shows that an ex-offender who is in education or employment is 50%
less likely to re-offend, yet it is very difficult to support those in recovery and/or
ex-offenders into mainstream training and education. Our research found that
one of the biggest barriers is often a lack of confidence with many fearing being
stigmatized and having to endure yet another failure in life.
Therefore our projects are about providing an effective stepping stone to first
overcoming that sense of worthlessness, build confidence and empower
individuals to start setting their own goals as a precursor to entering higher
education.
Evidence from our previous courses shows them to be a catalyst to further
personal development, with 70% of participants from our last course
progressing into further education, volunteering and employment which will
have a profound effect on their future life chances.
Each course will run once a week for eight weeks. Each session will be 3 hours
long, providing each learner with 24 hours of guided-learning.
Participants will learn transferable media skills and soft skills considered vital
for employability; they will also learn how to successfully complete tasks by
working as an individual and as part of a team, using broadcast standard
cameras and equipment as well as film industry standard software and
computers. Skills that will be acquired are as follows:-
 Team working
 Communicating confidently
 Camera, tripod, microphone use,
 How to use editing software
 Literacy, numeracy and IT
Our pilot projects led us to develop incentives to retain as many of the starters as
possible. These include the potential to gain a Level 1 OCN Accredited award
per graduate for ‘Using Team Working Skills’ and ‘Improving Own Learning
& Performance’. OCN Awards are QCF approved and unit based enabling them
to be built on to Certification and Diploma levels

These courses are the sole property of isore Media CIC Page 2
Our last project started with fourteen clients in recovery from substance misuse
and/or on probation. Only three of those starters dropped out with one of those
leaving to take a series of courses at Fircroft college of adult education and the
majority of those that remained have either signed up for adult education
courses, currently researching availability or involved in volunteering.
Through our success, we have recently been awarded a contract with HMP Onley
to deliver six of our Personal Development courses and Preparation for
Employment workshops to 48 of their inmates over the next year, as well as
being commissioned to make two short films within the service, supported by
successful graduates from the courses.
Optional follow on workshops - Preparation for employment
Weeks 9 to 12 - How to Improve Your Prospects
This section of the project is designed to follow on from our personal
development course for all or just some of the eight students who graduated. It
will run once a week for four weeks with each workshop being 3 hours long and
consisting of the following:
 Two qualified tutors per workshop
 Using the film produced by isore Media CIC ‘Making Your Past Pay’ [where
appropriate] as a discussion tool for overcoming potential barriers to
employment
 ‘How to’ produce Positive Disclosures
 Negotiating ‘job specs’, application forms and CV writing
 Communicating Confidently – including interview role play
 Mock interviews with constructive feedback [interview panel chosen by
service provider]
 Written references from isore Media CIC [assuming 8 week and 4 week
course outcomes have been achieved]
Overview of the proposed 12 week project
Eight clients/service users will begin with 8 weeks of media and soft skills
training. During the training the students will learn how to set up and use
broadcast camera equipment such as camera and tripod as well as settings and
feature within the camera. They will also learn about directionality of
microphones and the correct microphone selection. They will also learn about
shot framings, job roles, storyboarding, script writing and project planning as
well as the importance of permissions and intellectual property transfer as a
media producer.

The students will then take their newly acquired learning and plan (as a team) a
short-filmed sequence of their own. This will require the students to:
 Create a project plan.
 Identify job roles.
 Create a storyboard
 Plan shooting days
 Arrange for location use for filming.
 Acquire permissions for location use.
 Create, complete and get all permission paperwork signed.
 Film matched action shots and cutaways.
 Create a smooth flowing sequence.
They will then edit their sequence and learn about editing and editing processes
such as:
 Log and capture footage.
 Digitising tape based media.
 Creating sequences and logging bins.
 Create a workflow timeline
 Use trim and cutting tools.
 Insert transitions.
 Insert text, titles and credits.
 Insert logo’s e.g. jpeg and still media into moving image time lines.
 Adjust sound levels
 Export finished project into a QuickTime movie.
 Burn a DVD for finished project
The follow on part of the project will be a 4 week series of preparation for
employment workshops that will identify and open discussions about barriers
for ex-offenders and/or recovering addicts when applying for work. The
workshops aim to motivate and equip the students with the necessary skills and
self-confidence to negotiate the sometimes tricky pathways to employment.
Making Your Past Pay video will be used as a discussion tool with students to
identify the need for positive disclosures when applying for employment. Our
workshops support students to understand the importance of being able to
match their skills to job specifications, knowing ‘how to’ create a good CV and
selling themselves with a positive covering letter with good grammar and
punctuation.
The value of being able to communicate confidently using the spoken word, open
body language and knowing how to ‘listen to respond’ rather than ‘listening just
to speak’ will form the basis of the penultimate workshop where students will
use scenarios and role play to experience interviews from the perspective of
both the interviewer and the interviewee .

In the final week of the preparation for employment workshops, students will
have the opportunity to put all their newly acquired skills into practice when an
interview panel made up of staff/clients from the service in which we are
working will read through the students application forms and hold a mock
interview with each of them with the view to providing constructive feedback
and promote self-confidence on their achievements.

same time offering themselves as role models for what can be achieved through
education and self-motivation
Jeanette also worked as a student support worker at Fircroft College of Adult

it throughout the workshops and compliments Jason’s extensive Media
knowledge, experience and passion to provide a wide and inclusive experience
for all of our beneficiaries
Duration
Our OCN accredited Personal Development through Film Making courses can be
booked as a stand-alone 8 x 3hrs a week course or we would be willing to
consider longer days over less weeks, but to achieve the accreditation, each
course must meet the full 24hour guided learning hours criteria
The four week Preparation for Employment workshops are designed to follow on
from the personal development course, but again we are more than happy to
discuss any requirements you may have
