Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in men and the second leading cause in women. Tobacco use is responsible for almost 90% of lung cancer cases. While most lung cancers are caused by smoking, 15% of men and 50% of women who get lung cancer are non-smokers. Non-smokers can develop lung cancer due to factors like secondhand smoke and air pollution, including certain airborne chemicals found at higher levels in South Central Los Angeles. Secondhand smoke exposure has been linked to increased rates of hearing loss in non-smoking children and is one of the reasons non-smokers develop lung cancer. rate of lung cancer on males in south central
Los Angeles.
In southcentral Los Angeles there air
sampling has indicated an excess of certain
polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons.

test to check their level of cotinine, an
indication of level of tobacco smoke
exposure. the kids were all non-smokers.
Kids who are exposed to secondhand smoke
had higher rates of low-frequency and high-
frequency hearing loss.
