The document provides guidance for creating a narrative photographic project documenting a trip to Birmingham using one of four styles: portraits of people at work, street photography, street portraits, or documentary landscape. It discusses each style and provides examples of photographers known for that approach. Students are instructed to research one photographer in their chosen style and use establishing, detailed, main, and concluding shots to tell a story through images about Birmingham.

26. “I wanted the buildings to look like models, and to photograph them from above
on sunny days so there was a sense of a singular light source” – Tom Merilion
27. Aerial photographs of Birmingham. Merilion achieved this by photographing from
a small aircraft flying low over the city centre. He used an architectural lens the
wrong way round, with a selective focus and a polarizing filter to emphasize the
colours of sky and foliage.
