Week 6. Sept 26-28

                                   Library Research Skills

As a college student you should be able to find, retrieve, and evaluate information. This
information will be used by you to develop an appropriate response to a problem or question.
During this week you will learn how to do that.

The Mount Library has over 90,000 items -- books, periodicals, newspapers, compact
discs and videos. Using any computer with Internet access, you can locate any item in the
Library. You can also find articles in journals and newspapers, access electronic books, request
items from other libraries and search the World Wide Web. By completing this week’s activities,
you will know how and where to find them.

You will do the following:

Evaluating Websites

   1. Each student reads the articles assigned for the week 6. Complete the readings
individually before September 26th. Find the articles on Blackboard under “Readings”.

   2. On September 26th you will work in groups. Look for your group below. Your group will
upload one post onto the discussion board (Forum – Library Research Assignment).
Delegate one member of your group to do the post. The post will have 2 parts:

       a. Part 1. Answer briefly the following questions:

What do you need to take into consideration while evaluating websites? What are
the benefits of using an article from a library database compared to a website
           article?

       b. Part 2. Answer the question (your answer should be no less than 150 words):

Group 1 Question: Evaluate the website of the RYT Hospital-Dwayne Medical Center :
http://www.rythospital.com Is this a credible resource? Would you use the articles from
this website for your paper? Yes or Not? Provide your reasons.

Group 2 Question: Evaluate the website of the Internet Public Library.
http://www.ipl.org Is this a credible resource? Would you use the articles from this
website for your paper? Yes or Not? Provide your reasons.

Group 3 Question: Evaluate the website of the Dog Island Organization.
http://www.thedogisland.com Is this a credible resource? Would you use the articles
from this website for your paper? Yes or Not? Provide your reasons.
Group 4 Question: Evaluate the website of the Women’s Health Office.
http://www.womenshealth.gov Is this a credible resource? Would you use the articles
from this website for your paper? Yes or Not? Provide your reasons.

Each group will complete their posts by the end of September 26th . All group members will
not receive attendance credit for this day if your group does not upload the post by the
end of September 26th. Each group can work on this class activity anywhere on campus where
there is access to the internet (classroom, dorm room, outside, etc). Eventhough you and your
group members are not required to come to the classroom on Sept 26, you will need to work as
a group to complete this activity. So, find a comfortable location and have fun!!!

Groups:

Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Group 4
