First class delivery
Our Dornan Engineering team worked on the new Royal Mail delivery
and sorting centre at Hemel Hempstead, completed in July 2011, value
of £3.5m.
Our Dornan team were responsible for the design, supply, installation,
testing, commissioning and system proving of the MEP (Mechanical,
Electrical and Plumbing) package.
The 25’000sq/m state-of-the-art centre combined the mail distribution
centres of nearby Watford, Stevenage and Hemel Hempstead centres to
become a new and larger centre serving the Hertfordshire area. This centre
is known as the Northern Home Counties Mailing Centre. The building
consists of a large warehouse space constructed of three portal sections.
Loading bays are located in the South West elevation of the building. An
existing office accommodation block is located on the North East elevation
over three floors.
The fast track Design and Build contract was completed in 8 months and
handed over to Royal Mail in July. The building will be used 24 hours a day,
365 days a year. The project was value engineered to maximise returns,
whilst still maintaining high quality installation. The project was built to
budget and within the original construction programme.
The key design concepts for the various elements of the works were as
follows:
Office accommodation- maximising reuse of existing plant where possible,
modifying and increasing the capacity for ventilation & cooling/heating and
cost effective systems.
Warehouse accommodation- positive pressurisation to reduce infiltration,
incorporation of environmental control to warehouse space to provide
ventilation, heating & cooling appropriate to the occupancy and equipment
(automation) requirements, avoid stratification and use of free cooling in
mid seasons.
Our mechanical services installed include the following:
1). Provide and install 3 No. 45kW Stulz Computer Room air Conditioning

“Refreshing in this current market”
HARBOUR EXCHANGE TOWER
Dornan Engineering were awarded the Mechanical of Level 4 at
Harbour Exchange Tower in Canary Wharf, London.
The project was a commercial fit out on the 4th floor of the Exchange
Tower consisting of refurbing the existing VAV boxes and installing
new VAV boxes as well. We were to give the AHU’s a service and
refurbishment. We removed asbestos gaskets from the existing hot
water pipework serving the AHU’s and they were disposed of by
others. We carried out refurbishment to the existing ductwork and also
added new routes to suit the VAV box layout. We installed 2 no extract
fans on the 4th floor. We also refurbished the toilet pipework.
Ground floor works consisted of refurbing AHU’s in plant room serving
building 1 and 2 lobbies. We installed new grilles and ductwork serving
these areas. We did a complete strip out and new install of pipework
for the ground floor toilets. Also installed new grilles serving these
areas.
This marked the first project with ISG and after a successful handover,
we look forward to building on our relationship with the group over the
coming months. Dornan was also awarded Safety Contractor of the
