1. What is a pre-arranged funeral plan?
A pre-arranged funeral plan is a contract between you and a funeral
home that allows you to purchase funeral services for yourself or a
loved one long before it is needed. Having a plan in place eliminates
difficult decisions at the time of death. It frees your loved ones from
the further strain, financial burden and potential conflict that can arise
during a time of grieving and loss. In addition, a prearranged plan protects
you from inflation for the goods and services you choose.
How will my family know what I have purchased?
Be sure to tell your loved ones that you have a prearranged
funeral plan in place and the funeral home that provided it. You
will receive copies of all the documents you sign. Be sure your
family knows where these documents are. The funeral home will
keep a file with all your information.
How can I pay for my prearranged plan?
You have a choice of paying in full at the time of the contract
or creating a plan to pay over time. If you are paying in install-
ments, you will get a payment schedule. Depending on the state
of your health, the payment plan might include life insurance
coverage that will pay off the plan in case you die before the
plan is paid off.
How do I know my pre-payment is safe?
The payment is held by a third party, either in a trust
account or by an insurance company, essentially keeping it in
escrow until the time of your death. If the funds are held by
an insurance company, the amount is re-insured by a Colorado
fund, ensuring the safety of your payment.
What if I don’t have a funeral plan in place
before I need one?
The first question your loved ones will be asked is what mortuary should be
called. They will have to meet with a funeral director, make all the arrangements
and will have to pay for them. All this will happen while they are dealing with
the often-overwhelming emotions that come from the death of a loved one.
