2. What was the theme of your project and
what attracted you to it?
• The main theme for my project was Fashion. I was attracted to this theme because its something
that I am deeply interested in and know quite a few things about the category. When I was told
that I could make a documentary on the theme of fashion I was happy because I was genuinely
interested in making a good informative doc.
• I have been into fashion for over a year now and its what I dedicate my whole savings too so I
though it would make perfect sense to do this factual piece on Fashion. I had a concept in my head
that I though would work for my idea of fashion hence why I ended up going with this idea in the
end
3. What research did you undertake and how
did it help develop your project?
• To summarise I feel like the research that I conducted was extremely helpful and has allowed me
to gain a better understanding on what type of documentary style I am wanting to use and what
would best fit my idea. When looking at the few subgenres of documentaries there was lots of
things that I also found out that wouldn’t be useful for me, which would then help me further
realise how I want my video to be laid out. By conducting this research I have found a better
understanding of my target audience, this allows my project to be better aimed at the right
audience which should help the final piece.
• I have also learned about the different editing techniques and how they become useful for the
viewers perspective, what I mean by this is that there is a certain type of editing style used in the
docs that I think could be useful for my final piece. Some examples of these techniques are fast
paced editing, quick/smooth transitions etc.
4. How did you develop and improve your ideas
throughout the project?
• I managed to further improve and develop my ideas when I started
looking at already existing interviews and what type of questions
people are getting asked based around fashion. This helped me gain a
better understanding on what type of questions I could ask that could
help with the outcome of my project.
5. What was the outcome of the project/task?
• The outcome was a completed documentary on the evolution of
fashion and what are my do’s and don'ts when it comes to fashion, I
also interviewed fashion enthusiasts about what their favorite fashion
trends are and what they also don’t want to see anymore of.
• I tried to create a comedic documentary with some lighthearted
humor as I wanted to keep the viewer's interest
• The outcome was not what I intended it to be and wanted to have a
wide range different shot types to make the video less ‘samey’.
6. Personal Response
This section will explore your thoughts and feelings about the
experience. This will help gain a understand of how your personal
feelings may have impacted the final outcome.
7. How did you feel about the project before
you started?
• I always had the idea that I wanted to do something related to fashion
as it is probably like my only main interest, however I going into the
project I wasn’t too sure how I wanted to portray my idea and was
not finalized on an idea.
• My main issue was what I was wanting to get across to my audience, I
felt as if I had no real message behind my work in the end and just
became a YouTube esq video.
8. What do you think about your project development and
how did it help you to refine your idea?
• Progressing through the research phase helped me gain a better
understanding on what I was wanting to achieve with this project, for
example when I looked at existing products, I noticed how different
camera techniques worked for certain types of documentary styles.
YouTube videos that I watch in my own time make good use of the
green screen and makes the background a lot more interesting and
engaging for the viewer
9. Did you collaborate on your project or engage
contributors, etc?
• I had my good friend Flynn help with all the camera work when I was
in shot (which was the majority of the time) I had an idea on how I
wanted the shot to look so we done some practice shots just to
confirm that it was all working well.
• I then interviewed Harry first out of everyone which was a good
icebreaker for me as it allowed me to see what type of response I
would get from my questions and what he thought of the questions
that I asked him. As Harry is very much into Fashion it allowed him to
have people that he could contact to also help out and allow me to
interview them, there was no further questions asked by them and
were more than happy to help out.
10. How did you feel when the project was
completed and why?
• I personally was happy with the project however there was aspects of
the final product that I was happy with more than others for example
I was satisfied with my postproduction as I feel like I learned new
editing techniques and became more confident in editing within
premiere pro.
• However, in terms of the production and the actual shooting of the
project I wasn’t too happy with the amount of work that came out of
it, there was no real depth to my video and feel like it becomes very
repetitive quite quickly. Next time I would use a wide range of camera
angles and would also film in different locations instead of using the
same studio for the whole video.
11. Evaluating the project
In the previous sections, you have been commenting upon the project development. The
evaluation may include some similar information but it will also include critical comment.
An evaluation must include information about the good and bad points of the project and it
is important to be honest. Finally, you should make a judgment about the effectiveness of
the success of the project
12. What were the good points about the project/task and what did you
learn from them? [try and think of at least 3, more if possible]
• One of the good points about my project was the use of the green screen, for
example I feel like I managed to make good use of the green screen in a comedic
way. I learned how to use the green screen and how to enable it in
postproduction
• Another good point about my project was the research that I put into it as I feel
like It really helped me gain a better understanding on how to layout my video,
this was something that I was struggling with regarding my project so looking at
other videos that would be like mine helped me a lot.
• One thing that I really think worked well with my project was the cutting in clips
and audio, I think this really helped with the comedic aspect. Is very minimal
however I feel as if it really adds a lot to my project.
• Finally, the last thing that I am satisfied with regarding my project is the
interviews that were carried out, I had no real plan on who to interview however
Harry really helped fin people who were into fashion, and it allowed me to have a
wider range of responses and really made the outcome more polished.
13. What challenges did you face and how did you
respond to them? Try and think of at least 3...
• The main challenge that I had to face was dealing with all the footage
being out of focus, or the fact that the lighting was dreadful during
the interviews. This was a pain to try and sort because it was
unrealistic to re-film everything as there was too much too re-film
and the interviewees would no longer be available in time, so I had to
deal with the shots being out of focus. I tried my best to use the
sharpening tool to try and help to improve the clarity however there
was only so much that I could do so it still came out quite blurry.
• Related to the previous challenge that I faced, the people that I
needed to interviewee were not available to interview again so it
became an ongoing problem that I had to face during production.
14. How would you rate the final piece? [think along the lines of
poor, satisfactory, good or excellent...justify your rating]
• Overall, I am happy with the project, I think having to deal with the
footage being blurry and still making the video watchable to a
satisfactory level is something that I should be proud of .
• I am content with my work however it was not the intended outcome
as I wanted to have multiple locations that I would be filming in, I also
wanted to interview random people on the street, but I found it
difficult to gain the publics attention.
15. How well did your project apply the characteristics
and conventions of the medium you worked in?
• I think I done a good job explaining facts and interesting things about
the fashion industry, I also gave some opinions of my own to keep the
video less formal and more relatable for the audience to engage with.
• I already had quite a bit of general knowledge when it came to
fashion and about different sub genres within fashion, so the script
came together quite easily.
• However, regarding the script there was obvious gaps and that can be
seen in the final product, for example there is a lot of repeating
myself and stuttering in lots of the shots however I think it works with
the comedic affect that I was trying to go for.
16. How did your design appeal to your target
audience?
• My target audience was of the younger generation and by making my
video a lighthearted comedic piece it allowed for me to appeal to my
target audience.
• Furthermore, I feel the topic that I was covering was something that
many teenagers are interested in within today's society so explain
fashion and giving information about that defiantly helped me reach
out to my target audience correctly
17. Analysis
In this section, you will focus on the details of the project and make
sense of what happened in the project. You should demonstrate how
your decisions informed the project development and the success of the
outcome.
18. What elements did not go well and why?
• Some elements that didn’t work too well with my project was having
to deal with the footage being out focus for most of the recording,
this ended up being something I had to try and fic with the
sharpening tool however I don’t think it worked too well in the end as
it looked almost too sharp and didn’t look professional enough for me
• I think the interviews didn’t work as well as I thought they would as I
wanted to have a more natural feel to my video, and I thought that
the interviews came out quite forced and staged. I had to resort to
interviewing people in a studio because my original idea didn’t work.
19. How did your skills develop during the portfolio? [remember,
skills aren't just technical, remember things like organisation,
time management, communication, etc as well]
• I managed to develop my communication skills mostly as when I went
to film in Leeds to interview people, I had to have that confidence to
go up to random people and ask them if I could interview them. After
the first couple I managed to gain that confidence and would end up
going up to everyone who I saw that looked like they was into fashion,
however I didn’t get a single person that wanted to be interviewed so
ended up being a waste of time.
• I also managed to gain better communication skills when I was just
interviewing the interviewees as they was people who I have never
met before however I though that I managed to make them feel
comfortable when being interviewed and by doing this it made me
more confident in going to speak to new people.
20. What feedback did you get from your peers
and viewings?
• “I thought that the way this video was edited was made to make me
laugh and the use of cutting clips really helped add to that”.
• “I really liked the use of the green screen although some parts were a
bit random, but It was quite funny”.
21. What knowledge have you gained that would help you in the
future to improve your project? Also, what knowledge from
academic literature and professionals has helped and Why?
• I have gained practical knowledge within premiere pro, for example I
feel more confident going into my FMP after this project because of
how the practical knowledge that I have gained.
• I have also learned the dos and don’ts when it comes to camera work
meaning that I will check thoroughly beforehand what my shot looks
like before continuing with the recording
22. Action Plan
This section will identify what you would do differently in the future and
identify ways you could develop.
23. How could you develop your skills for future projects? Please
identify the appropriate resources and courses. For example,
webpages, tutorials, books, short courses and qualifications.
• I would need to develop my time management and organization skills
so that I can be more relaxed when it comes to producing work for my
FMP. I also could research further into my knowledge in premiere pro
which would defiantly help my FMP because I will need to know more
skills and techniques to help maximize my grade
