Static Casting
The shell and core are the monobloc material in static cast rolls. By the control of techniques of
cooling speed and heat treatment, the static roll can get the performance requested on shell and
roll neck. The static casting is widely used to produce rolls for roughing mills, section mill, rail and
beam mills, universal mills, edge mills as well as wire mills, rod mills. Top pour casting and bottom
pour casting are applied in our production.

Centrifugal Casting
Centrifugal casting allows us to produce rolls made from two different materials – one of which forms
the surface part of the barrel that is wearable and heat resistant while the other makes up the core
with good mechanical resistance.
I. Horizontal Centrifugal Cast
Mould of horizontal centrifugal casting is placed horizontally.
Features:
1.The thickness of the layer at the upper end and lower end is almost homogeneous.
2.Porosity defect is easily to form in the final solidification zone of the outer layer. More outer layer
needs to be melted during the core filling. Cost will be increased as well as core feature be
affected.
3.Iron liquid is spreading at a slow rate in the mould cavity.

II. Vertical Centrifugal Cast
Mould of vertical centrifugal casting is placed vertically.
Features:
1.The crystal structure is compact.
2.During casting, the inside surface of the mould cavity is not easily subject to oxidization. It is
beneficial for the sound metallurgical combination of outer layer and core, suitable for the
production of high alloy compound rolls.
3.The thickness of outer layer at the upper end and lower end of the barrel is different.

Heat Treatment of Cast Roll
A high level of residual stress inside of the cast iron rolls is a result of the combination of the heat
stress and structural stress. It might cause change in the roll shape and dimension during the
machining. Some residual stress (for example, the high residual tensile stress at the core) will result
in a negative impact on its application. Therefore, all the cast iron rolls must undergo annealing
treatment to release the stress. Some cast rolls even require for a normalization treatment.
According to the actual demand of roll production, we have been equipped with the domestically
most advanced heat treatment furnace. The furnaces are equipped with electric radiation units and
fans for enhanced circulation of the furnace atmosphere. The temperature and cycle times are
capable of maintaining distribution and accuracy within 10 °C, so as to guarantee uniform hardness.

Melting and Forging
I. Melting
The alloy ingot for the blank of the forged steel rolls is usually melted by electric arc furnace.
Through the oxidization, restoration and adjustment to the ingredients of the steel liquid, slagging
reaction and slagging-off will reduce the content of harmful elements, thus to get qualified steel
liquid. The demoulded steel ingot can go to next step after its surface is finished and cleaned.

II. Forging
The qualified steel ingot is pressed to the roll blank by the hydraulic forging machine after pre-
heating, heating and even heating. The purpose of forging and pressing process is: the forging and
pressing can reduce and compress the porosity, shrinkage and some pore; improve the
macroscopic segregation (pattern segregation, V shape segregation) in the original structure of the
steel ingot; shatter the gross liquation carbide and net carbide; crush and refine the gross grain. In
order to acquire the optimized feature of the roll, we strictly control the forging ratio , not less than 3
for work rolls while more than 2.5 for large size backup rolls.

Technical features:
1. Using ladle furnace and vacuum degas to control material composition and gas content to
guarantee anti-fatigue lifetime.
2. Advanced forging machine controls the forging ratio to guarantee density of materials and keep
material a high strength. We keep the forging ratio above 3 for work rolls/intermediate rolls and
above 2.5 for back-up rolls.
Electro Slag Remelting
Electro slag remelting (ESR) is a specialized steel-making process in which a cast ingot in the form
of an electrode is re-melted in a water-cooled copper mould. The melting is activated by resistive
heat generated in a conductive slag.
Charactersistics of ESR:
1. No macroscopic segregation and few microscopic segregation. Very few and subtle non-metal
inclusion; dispersed distribution.
2. Compact and homogeneous structure

4. Beneficial for improvement of anti-fatigue and heat impact ability of the roll

Hardening and Heat treatment

Heat treatment is one of the most important processes during the roll manufacture. Heat
treat determinesthe quality of roll and further controls the quality of the strip/coils.
We use continuous double frequency induction process to maximize work rolls and intermediate

II. Back up Rolls
Back up rolls are widely used in both cold rolling mill and continuous hot strip mills. The heat
treatment for back up roll is different from the type of work roll. The back up rolls are produced by
the conventional furnace which is heated by gas and quenched by water spraying.
