GSUL NEWS IN THIS ISSUE-JULY2015
The Rebirth of GSUL
When James Shelby returned as President & CEO of the Greater
Sacramento Urban League on May 13, 2013 the agency had been
battling financial struggles. Since then, Mr. Shelby’s only priority has
been ensuring the organization keepsthe doors open tothe community.
The Greater Sacramento Urban League has assisted thousands in
achieving their social and economic goals over the years; we are a
business center connecting people to their future career pathways.
Shelby has put together a new team of executives to help rebuild the
Urban League back to a $2.2 million-a-year or more training center.
Angelina Garcia, Vice President of Finance, Kevin Daniel, Vice President
of Programs and Operations and Angela Lovest, Vice President of Fund
Development & Marketing are key players to ensure the organization
remains strong upon Shelby’s retirement in 2018.
GSUL mission is to provide underserved youth and adults with
education, job training and placement opportunities for them to achieve
economic self-reliance for the people in the Sacramento region. Our
parent organization, The National Urban League was founded in 1910 as
a historic civil rights organization dedicated to the economic
empowerment of underserved urban communities. With 95 affiliates
serving 300 communities in 35 states, the lives of over 2 million people
have been improved nationwide.
The Greater Sacramento Urban League will celebrate its 50th
anniversary in 2018. There are many ways you can get involved to help
ensure the doors remain open: Become a member, volunteer, donate or
become a community or corporate partner.

Students Making It Happen
On June 8, the Greater Sacramento Urban League celebrated students
that made it happen at the 2015 Spring Graduation. The graduates
completed educational and work development programs that will
connect them to a promising future. Out of 79 graduates 60 participated
and were honored along with their families at the graduation ceremony.
The keynote speaker was Zeny Agullana, Vice President of JP Morgan
Chase, and a GSUL board member.
This year we had two generations in one family graduate together. A
mother and daughter who participated in the G.E.D. Preparation
program for ages 17 ½ years old and up and the Digital Connectors after
school program for youth 14 and up. Students also graduated from A+
PC Technician, Custodial Training Program and Office Technician (IC3)
with certificates that allow them to compete with the best of the best
and around the world.
“In Sacramento there are no other programs that wrap training on
technical skills, interpersonal relationships, community service and
career pathways. We’ve helped these graduate kick start their futures
and have given them better advantages for entering our community
workforce said Kevin Daniel, VP of Programs, Greater Sacramento
Urban League.
GSUL Board Member Spot Light
Chalessa White is the newest 2015-2016 GSUL board member. She works for the Intel
Corporation in Folsom as the Public Affairs External Relations/ Education Manager. In this
position, she promotes Intel’s educational and community objectives through technology
in support of under-represented minorities and girls. On a personal note, Chalessa is a
foodie and world traveler who enjoys photography and volunteering.
AFTER SCHOOL YOUTH PROGRAM
Get Connected to Digital Connectors
The Digital Connectors is an after school program for young adults 14 to
21 that gives students a firm foundation in digital literacy. They develop
skills in using computers, applications and the Internet, and then take
what they learned out into the community to make a difference.
This partnership with Comcast was created to help low income
communities understand the benefits of using broadband and making it
part of their lives and to provide the region’s young adults with digital
skills needed to succeed. This program helps address the digital divide,
which remains a prevalent problem in communities across California.
Fewer than 60 percent of low income families have broadband access
and digital literacy skills, compared to more than 80 percent of the
remaining population.
Sacramento’s State of Black America
Get On The Bus! Black Lives Matter Sacramento Campaign is an effort
organized and led by local community leaders to reduce the deaths
among African American children. Tragically, in Sacramento County
African American children die at very disproportional rates, two times
the rate of other children. The four leading causes of death are infant
sleep related, perinatal conditions, child abuse and neglect homicides
and third-party homicide.
In 2013, following the Blue Ribbon Commission report, the Sacramento
County Board of Supervisors established the Steering Committee on
Reduction of African American Children Deaths between 10 percent and
20 percent by 2020.
Riders gathered at the footsteps of the Sacramento County
Administration building located on 700 H Street on June 16 in support of
the budget and strategic plan to be fully funded.
UPDATE
Sacramento County Board of Supervisors Agree to Invest in Children
Board approves $1.5 million for five years to
Reduce African American Child Deaths

Angelina Garcia, Vice President of Finance, Kevin Daniel, Vice President of Programs and Operations and Angela Lovest, Vice President of Fund Development & Marketing are key players to ensure the organization remains strong upon Shelby’s retirement in 2018. GSUL mission is to provide underserved youth and adults with education, job training and placement opportunities for them to achieve economic self-reliance for the people in the Sacramento region. The graduates completed educational and work development programs that will connect them to a promising future. Out of 79 graduates 60 participated and were honored along with their families at the graduation ceremony. The keynote speaker was Zeny Agullana, Vice President of JP Morgan Chase, and a GSUL board member. This year we had two generations in one family graduate together. A mother and daughter who participated in the G.E.D. Preparation program for ages 17 ½ years old and up and the Digital Connectors after school program for youth 14 and up. Students also graduated from A+ PC Technician, Custodial Training Program and Office Technician (IC3) with certificates that allow them to compete with the best of the best and around the world. “In Sacramento there are no other programs that wrap training on technical skills, interpersonal relationships, community service and career pathways. We’ve helped these graduate kick start their futures and have given them better advantages for entering our community workforce said Kevin Daniel, VP of Programs, Greater Sacramento Urban League. • 3. AFTER SCHOOL YOUTH PROGRAM Get Connected to Digital Connectors The Digital Connectors is an after school program for young adults 14 to 21 that gives students a firm foundation in digital literacy. They develop skills in using computers, applications and the Internet, and then take what they learned out into the community to make a difference. This partnership with Comcast was created to help low income communities understand the benefits of using broadband and making it part of their lives and to provide the region’s young adults with digital skills needed to succeed. This program helps address the digital divide, which remains a prevalent problem in communities across California. Fewer than 60 percent of low income families have broadband access and digital literacy skills, compared to more than 80 percent of the remaining population. Sacramento’s State of Black America Get On The Bus! Black Lives Matter Sacramento Campaign is an effort organized and led by local community leaders to reduce the deaths among African American children. Tragically, in Sacramento County African American children die at very disproportional rates, two times the rate of other children. The four leading causes of death are infant sleep related, perinatal conditions, child abuse and neglect homicides and third-party homicide. In 2013, following the Blue Ribbon Commission report, the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors established the Steering Committee on Reduction of African American Children Deaths between 10 percent and 20 percent by 2020. Riders gathered at the footsteps of the Sacramento County Administration building located on 700 H Street on June 16 in support of the budget and strategic plan to be fully funded.
