What is the Africa Venture?
The Africa Venture is an annual pan-African leadership
programme which assembles exceptional emerging leaders
from government, businesses and non-profits across Africa.
The programme enables the transfer of knowledge, know-
how and inspiration across generations, involving some of
the most inspiring leaders in the world today. It creates a new
generation of African leaders who have the Cultural Intelligence
to work fluidly and flexibly across the continent, who have the
analytical and creative skills to use diversity to spark innovation,
and who have extraordinarily broad African networks.
The Africa Venture focuses on applied leadership learning. An
important issue for the continent is identified and presented to
participants as a Challenge. As they work on this, it encourages
the participants to develop practical and innovative approaches
to leadership. In the process, they build relationships with
an exceptional African peer group. In 2018, the programme
looked at the Challenge: ‘How can we use technological
innovation to accelerate access to education in Africa?’
Having worked together on the pan-African Challenge, participants
go on to support each other in working on a challenge in their
own environments, bringing the leadership learning to bear and
creating powerful shifts in their current, real-world contexts.
The programme runs in tandem with the South Asia Venture,
creating opportunities for exposure beyond Africa.
Application and selection
Applications are received online and reviewed by a pan-
African Selection Panel of senior leaders. Successful
candidates are then invited to join the programme. The
applications are reviewed on the basis of two different
types of criteria: the individual applicant’s merit, and the
contribution of the applicant to the diversity of the group.
Applications need to evidence that the candidate is:
• in the early to mid-stage of their career
• an exceptional leader who is likely to
progress rapidly to a more senior role
• working in Africa
• excited about the opportunity that
the Africa Venture provides
Fees and Consortium Membership
The programme is funded through candidate fees. The
fee for the programme is quoted in different regionally
prominent currencies, to avoid the burden associated with
hard currency-based pricing. Bursaries are available based on
need and on the strength of the candidate’s application. As
far as possible, where candidates have applied for bursaries,
a level of bursary is negotiated which enables participation,
while ensuring the sustainability of the programme.
Large organizations have the option of sending a minimum
of five candidates and becoming a Consortium Member of
the Africa Venture. Membership includes several benefits
like discounted fees, brand association through coverage
on all materials and involvement in our social media
campaigns, and a follow-up workshop with the Consortium
Member candidates six months post the programme.
Programme design
The programme follows a blended learning approach, with
two online phases interspersed with two face-to-face
modules. The seamless integration of contact and online
learning enables participants to continue to develop and
apply their learning, grow their Cultural Intelligence and
develop their relationships before and between the face-to-
face modules, despite being dispersed across the continent.
The two contact modules are delivered in two different
and prominent African cities, and comprise five and three
intensive days of learning respectively. For the second face-to-
face module the candidates have the option to explore their
leadership skills with Venture candidates in another part of the
world, providing a powerful opportunity to obtain international
exposure and see Africa through the eyes of others.
Throughout the programme, the participants are guided
through hands-on processes of creativity, innovation and
collaboration. They visit many organizations across the host
cities and engage in discussions with senior leaders from many
organizations across the public, private and NGO sectors.
Our in-house technology platform helps facilitate the online
learning. This enables our participants to access learning
materials and build skills, ideas and relationships before
and between the face-to-face modules. This process is
supplemented with webinars with international leaders.
Upon graduation, participants become part of the Common
Purpose global alumni network of over 80,000, with
opportunities to continue their learning and development and
connect with other Common Purpose alumni around the world.

What happened in 2018?
The candidate group
High quality applications were received from candidates
across 11 countries, with a large number of these
requesting bursaries. 55 participants were selected, and
a number of full and part bursaries were granted. Of the
55 participants selected, 49 participants from across ten
African countries were able to take up their places on the
programme. The remaining six candidates were unable
to participate primarily due to funding constraints. 40
candidates attended the final contact module in Lagos.
Funding constraints were again responsible for the non-
participation of several candidates, as only a single travel
bursary was available for the final module. A list of the
candidates who participated appears in Appendix I.
The 2018 Challenge
Stakeholders raised a wide range of potential
challenges to be addressed at the Africa Venture
2018. This culminated in the selection of the
Challenge: “How can we use technological innovation
to increase access to education in Africa?”
The cities
In 2018, the face-to-face modules were delivered in
Nairobi, Kenya, where the shared challenge was explored;
and Lagos, Nigeria, where a personal challenge was
explored. Participants also had the option of attending
the final module in Dhaka, Bangladesh, with their South
Asian counterparts. This option was taken up by two of the
candidates, and one South Asian joined the group in Lagos.
Face to face in Nairobi, Kenya
The first face-to-face module was delivered
from 7-11 May 2018 in Nairobi.
A number of contributors engaged both formally and
informally with the participants, sharing a wealth of

days of immersions into local organizations and engagements
with key individuals from Nairobi. This was followed by
an intensive period of idea generation and refinement in
response to the Challenge. The Nairobi module culminated
with the presentation of the candidates’ responses to
the Challenge to the Department of Education.

Online learning
The online learning environment is shared across
all Common Purpose Ventures, internationally, to
create a rich, multi-cultural learning environment.
In the first online module, participants began
their leadership journey by introducing
themselves and beginning to build a rich array
of relationships. They also began their shared
thinking about the African Challenge. In the
third module, also presented online, they were
provided with a number of modules on Leading
Beyond Authority and Cultural Intelligence. While
some candidates used these materials to fullest
advantage, others were reluctant to engage on
this platform. In addition to the online modules, a

Ideas developed in response to the Challenge
Educating for development
Streamlined and sustainable education systems will only
be attained by revolutionizing the process through which
our education is designed. This idea calls for curriculum
redesign that employs a comprehensive process, bringing
to the table strategic stakeholders such as the learners,
teachers, governments, private sector players, non-
governmental organizations and modern education
technologies; to ensure sustainable, far-sighted and
relevant content creation. The new curriculum should
emphasize core employability skills such as leadership
and entrepreneurship, as well as both design and critical
thinking. The proposal is for a context-based curriculum
with global values customized for the appreciation of local
needs. The curriculum should also provide for individual
differences, and be gender sensitive as well as inclusive
for children from diverse backgrounds and abilities.
Elimu Village
Elimu Village is a research, resource and play centre where
children aged 3 to 18 are encouraged to explore their
talents. We identify and build skills that can be utilized
in the future, using technology as a tool to enhance
learning. Children are encouraged to apply the lessons
learnt. The village is accessible during the holidays and
on weekends and is intended to supplement classroom-
based learning. The idea is to immerse the learners in an
integrated learning environment to enhance knowledge
transfer, and expose them to a digital edge that prepares
them to drive national and continental development. This
village also facilitates the participation of children in rural
areas. Learners can also take part virtually through the
Elimu mobile phone application (USSD/smartphone).
Elimu Village is a green facility that runs on solar power,
uses borehole water, and biodegrades its waste.
Africa Education Curriculum
Synchronization (AECS)
The Africa Education Curriculum Synchronisation (AECS)
project is an online platform that will bring together all
the curriculum available in various African countries in one
space and shall be accessed by all member participants.
Members shall be able to view and adapt best practice
from other countries as well as propose structure and/or
content to curriculum which shall be deemed appropriate
for the continent. It is proposed that while some diversity
be maintained, there are certain areas of commonality
that could be incorporated in all the curricula. These
include, amongst others, issues around information and
communication technology, entrepreneurship, music
and art, as well as internet safety and security.
Afrobot©
Personalized Learning, Responsive Teaching
Afrobot© is Africa’s favourite learning and teaching companion.
It consists of two thoughtfully designed devices – a large
bot that is intended to act as a teaching companion and will
be based in the classroom; and a smaller, simpler, battery
powered bot for students to take home to use for homework,
revision and research. Whilst personalizing learning, the bots
will also collect big data that could act as an incentive to the
private sector to provide and maintain bots, or it could also
be sold in line with government regulations, to cover costs.
The bots are a revolutionary solution to a major problem.
They create a large learning ecosystem, whereby students are
taught using engaging material, teachers are supported and
assisted, parents are informed and governments and the private
sector are able to efficiently input and extract information.
Afrobot© ensures improved access to education for all.
Uhuru Hub
Uhuru Hub is a mobile ICT solution that increases access to
education in marginalized communities. The Uhuru hub project
consists of the following services: mobile ICT units that provide
training and support services to the communities, development
and issuing of mobile devices and learning packs, teacher
training services and community enlightenment campaigns.
Afriducation
The purpose of Afriducation is to bring scalable, sustainable,
quality education to African classrooms by connecting
teachers in predominantly rural areas with teachers in more
affluent spaces across Africa for skills transfer. It also allows
learners to connect with the same teachers across Africa
and experience collaboration opportunities such as working
with subject experts, developing problem-solving skills and
learning through role play. Learners can participate in online
discussion forums and enhanced digital literacy skills are
acquired. This includes both primary and secondary schools.
The participants spent much dedicated time in Nairobi
working on the Challenge “How can we use technological
innovation to increase access to education in Africa?” They
presented their responses at the close of the module.
Impact Assessment
10
On conclusion of the programme, the
participants assessed their learning, focusing on
the key impacts of the programme for them, and
on the shifts in their leadership competencies
and behaviours. This was done through written
feedback given at the end of the face-to-
face module when candidates were asked to
respond to the following two questions:
•	Which sessions / elements of the programme
have been of greatest value and why?
•	What impact, if any, do you think the
programme to will have on how you operate?
Further feedback was obtained through an
online assessment after the programme.
The overall impact of the Africa Venture on
each candidate is a combination of three areas.

  • 1. Africa Venture 2018 Report Nairobi. Lagos. Developing emerging leaders from across Africa In association withIn association with Africa Venture Developing future leaders from across Africa The Africa Venture is an annual leadership programme that develops exceptional emerging leaders from government, businesses and non- profits across Africa. The programme enables the transfer of knowledge, know-how and inspiration across generations, involving some of the most inspiring leaders in the world today. It creates a new generation of African leaders who have the Cultural Intelligence to work fluidly and flexibly across the continent. “This experience is a beautiful reminder of the talent, passion and power this continent holds in the hearts and minds of the people present.” Jessica Chivinge, Executive Associate (Chief of Staff) to the CEO and Deputy CEO, Discovery Health
  • 2. 32 What is the Africa Venture? The Africa Venture is an annual pan-African leadership programme which assembles exceptional emerging leaders from government, businesses and non-profits across Africa. The programme enables the transfer of knowledge, know- how and inspiration across generations, involving some of the most inspiring leaders in the world today. It creates a new generation of African leaders who have the Cultural Intelligence to work fluidly and flexibly across the continent, who have the analytical and creative skills to use diversity to spark innovation, and who have extraordinarily broad African networks. The Africa Venture focuses on applied leadership learning. An important issue for the continent is identified and presented to participants as a Challenge. As they work on this, it encourages the participants to develop practical and innovative approaches to leadership. In the process, they build relationships with an exceptional African peer group. In 2018, the programme looked at the Challenge: ‘How can we use technological innovation to accelerate access to education in Africa?’ Having worked together on the pan-African Challenge, participants go on to support each other in working on a challenge in their own environments, bringing the leadership learning to bear and creating powerful shifts in their current, real-world contexts. The programme runs in tandem with the South Asia Venture, creating opportunities for exposure beyond Africa.
  • 3. Application and selection Applications are received online and reviewed by a pan- African Selection Panel of senior leaders. Successful candidates are then invited to join the programme. The applications are reviewed on the basis of two different types of criteria: the individual applicant’s merit, and the contribution of the applicant to the diversity of the group. Applications need to evidence that the candidate is: • in the early to mid-stage of their career • an exceptional leader who is likely to progress rapidly to a more senior role • working in Africa • excited about the opportunity that the Africa Venture provides Fees and Consortium Membership The programme is funded through candidate fees. The fee for the programme is quoted in different regionally prominent currencies, to avoid the burden associated with hard currency-based pricing. Bursaries are available based on need and on the strength of the candidate’s application. As far as possible, where candidates have applied for bursaries, a level of bursary is negotiated which enables participation, while ensuring the sustainability of the programme. Large organizations have the option of sending a minimum of five candidates and becoming a Consortium Member of the Africa Venture. Membership includes several benefits like discounted fees, brand association through coverage on all materials and involvement in our social media campaigns, and a follow-up workshop with the Consortium Member candidates six months post the programme. Programme design The programme follows a blended learning approach, with two online phases interspersed with two face-to-face modules. The seamless integration of contact and online learning enables participants to continue to develop and apply their learning, grow their Cultural Intelligence and develop their relationships before and between the face-to- face modules, despite being dispersed across the continent. The two contact modules are delivered in two different and prominent African cities, and comprise five and three intensive days of learning respectively. For the second face-to- face module the candidates have the option to explore their leadership skills with Venture candidates in another part of the world, providing a powerful opportunity to obtain international exposure and see Africa through the eyes of others. Throughout the programme, the participants are guided through hands-on processes of creativity, innovation and collaboration. They visit many organizations across the host cities and engage in discussions with senior leaders from many organizations across the public, private and NGO sectors. Our in-house technology platform helps facilitate the online learning. This enables our participants to access learning materials and build skills, ideas and relationships before and between the face-to-face modules. This process is supplemented with webinars with international leaders. Upon graduation, participants become part of the Common Purpose global alumni network of over 80,000, with opportunities to continue their learning and development and connect with other Common Purpose alumni around the world. How does it work? Phase One Online – 1 month Phase Two Contact – 5 days Phase Three Online – 3-4 months Phase Four Contact – 3 days • Join the online learning portal • Introduce yourself to fellow participants • Do background reading and discuss the Challenge • Prepare to visit the host city • Introduction to Leading Beyond Authority (LBA) • Introduction to Cultural Intelligence (CQ) • InnoVenture (Challenge focus, immersion visits, develop and pitch responses to the Challenge) • Reflect on leadership learning and decide on personal challenge • Deepen CQ learning with online materials • Discussion of CQ learning materials online • 3 webinars with senior leaders from Africa and South Asia • Try out new learning on your personal challenge • Prepare to visit the second host city • Share learning from personal challenges • Learn about another city (Africa or South Asia) • Advanced LBA and CQ learning, working together on a local issue (Collab) • Graduate from the Venture • (Open to alumni from prior Ventures) 5 A think tank of eminent African leaders steers the programme • Joyce Banda, Founder and Leader of the People’s Party (Malawi) • Marguerite Barankitse, Humanitarian (Burundi) • Sir Sam Jonah, Executive Chairman of Jonah Capital and Director of Vodafone (Ghana) • Reuel Khosa, Chairman of Dzana Investments and Globeleq (South Africa) • Frannie Leautier, Senior Vice President, African Development Bank (Tanzania) 4
  • 4. What happened in 2018? The candidate group High quality applications were received from candidates across 11 countries, with a large number of these requesting bursaries. 55 participants were selected, and a number of full and part bursaries were granted. Of the 55 participants selected, 49 participants from across ten African countries were able to take up their places on the programme. The remaining six candidates were unable to participate primarily due to funding constraints. 40 candidates attended the final contact module in Lagos. Funding constraints were again responsible for the non- participation of several candidates, as only a single travel bursary was available for the final module. A list of the candidates who participated appears in Appendix I. The 2018 Challenge Stakeholders raised a wide range of potential challenges to be addressed at the Africa Venture 2018. This culminated in the selection of the Challenge: “How can we use technological innovation to increase access to education in Africa?” The cities In 2018, the face-to-face modules were delivered in Nairobi, Kenya, where the shared challenge was explored; and Lagos, Nigeria, where a personal challenge was explored. Participants also had the option of attending the final module in Dhaka, Bangladesh, with their South Asian counterparts. This option was taken up by two of the candidates, and one South Asian joined the group in Lagos. Face to face in Nairobi, Kenya The first face-to-face module was delivered from 7-11 May 2018 in Nairobi. A number of contributors engaged both formally and informally with the participants, sharing a wealth of experience in leadership. The programme also included two days of immersions into local organizations and engagements with key individuals from Nairobi. This was followed by an intensive period of idea generation and refinement in response to the Challenge. The Nairobi module culminated with the presentation of the candidates’ responses to the Challenge to the Department of Education. The programme was facilitated by Dr Elsbeth Dixon, global Ventures lead, Common Purpose, and Patricia Muia, Founder and Managing Director, Kenyan Conferencing Solutions, an alumnus of our international senior leaders programme, CSCLeaders. Some programme contributors in Nairobi: • Ken Okwero, Head of Strategy, Safaricom • Boniface Mwangi, activist, photographer and politician • Rachel Muthoga, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) • Alex Awiti, Director, East African Institute of the Aga Khan University, The Aga Khan University • Sam Gichuru, Founder and CEO, Nailab • James Oduro, Kenyan National Department of Education • Sitawa Namwalie, Poet • Claire Baker, Fundraising, Communications and Partnerships, LivelyHoods / wPOWER • Julia Middleton, Founder and CEO, Common Purpose Some immersion hosts in Nairobi • WildlifeDirect • eLimu • Huduma Kenya • Toyota Kenya • M-Kopa Face-to-face in Lagos, Nigeria The second face-to-face module was delivered from 28- 30 August 2018 in Lagos. In the third module, also presented online, they were provided with a number of modules on Leading Beyond Authority and Cultural Intelligence. • 5. Ideas developed in response to the Challenge Educating for development Streamlined and sustainable education systems will only be attained by revolutionizing the process through which our education is designed. This idea calls for curriculum redesign that employs a comprehensive process, bringing to the table strategic stakeholders such as the learners, teachers, governments, private sector players, non- governmental organizations and modern education technologies; to ensure sustainable, far-sighted and relevant content creation. The new curriculum should emphasize core employability skills such as leadership and entrepreneurship, as well as both design and critical thinking. The proposal is for a context-based curriculum with global values customized for the appreciation of local needs. The curriculum should also provide for individual differences, and be gender sensitive as well as inclusive for children from diverse backgrounds and abilities. Elimu Village Elimu Village is a research, resource and play centre where children aged 3 to 18 are encouraged to explore their talents. We identify and build skills that can be utilized in the future, using technology as a tool to enhance learning. Children are encouraged to apply the lessons learnt. The village is accessible during the holidays and on weekends and is intended to supplement classroom- based learning. The idea is to immerse the learners in an integrated learning environment to enhance knowledge transfer, and expose them to a digital edge that prepares them to drive national and continental development. This village also facilitates the participation of children in rural areas. Learners can also take part virtually through the Elimu mobile phone application (USSD/smartphone). Elimu Village is a green facility that runs on solar power, uses borehole water, and biodegrades its waste. Africa Education Curriculum Synchronization (AECS) The Africa Education Curriculum Synchronisation (AECS) project is an online platform that will bring together all the curriculum available in various African countries in one space and shall be accessed by all member participants. Members shall be able to view and adapt best practice from other countries as well as propose structure and/or content to curriculum which shall be deemed appropriate for the continent. It is proposed that while some diversity be maintained, there are certain areas of commonality that could be incorporated in all the curricula. These include, amongst others, issues around information and communication technology, entrepreneurship, music and art, as well as internet safety and security. Afrobot© Personalized Learning, Responsive Teaching Afrobot© is Africa’s favourite learning and teaching companion. It consists of two thoughtfully designed devices – a large bot that is intended to act as a teaching companion and will be based in the classroom; and a smaller, simpler, battery powered bot for students to take home to use for homework, revision and research. Whilst personalizing learning, the bots will also collect big data that could act as an incentive to the private sector to provide and maintain bots, or it could also be sold in line with government regulations, to cover costs. The bots are a revolutionary solution to a major problem. They create a large learning ecosystem, whereby students are taught using engaging material, teachers are supported and assisted, parents are informed and governments and the private sector are able to efficiently input and extract information. Afrobot© ensures improved access to education for all. Uhuru Hub Uhuru Hub is a mobile ICT solution that increases access to education in marginalized communities. The Uhuru hub project consists of the following services: mobile ICT units that provide training and support services to the communities, development and issuing of mobile devices and learning packs, teacher training services and community enlightenment campaigns. Afriducation The purpose of Afriducation is to bring scalable, sustainable, quality education to African classrooms by connecting teachers in predominantly rural areas with teachers in more affluent spaces across Africa for skills transfer. It also allows learners to connect with the same teachers across Africa and experience collaboration opportunities such as working with subject experts, developing problem-solving skills and learning through role play. Learners can participate in online discussion forums and enhanced digital literacy skills are acquired. This includes both primary and secondary schools. The participants spent much dedicated time in Nairobi working on the Challenge “How can we use technological innovation to increase access to education in Africa?” They presented their responses at the close of the module.
  • 6. Impact Assessment 10 On conclusion of the programme, the participants assessed their learning, focusing on the key impacts of the programme for them, and on the shifts in their leadership competencies and behaviours. This was done through written feedback given at the end of the face-to- face module when candidates were asked to respond to the following two questions: • Which sessions / elements of the programme have been of greatest value and why? • What impact, if any, do you think the programme to will have on how you operate? Further feedback was obtained through an online assessment after the programme. The overall impact of the Africa Venture on each candidate is a combination of three areas. Make better decisions Lead innovative resilient teams Accelerate complex change Broader horizons More inclusive More collaborative 11

  • 8. 14 Broader Horizons “If 50% of people who took part in the Africa Venture programme became active leaders of African countries, in ten years this continent will reach an increasing rate of the 2063 agenda. This programme is a network of emerging leaders (active and passive). I am already active.” Espoir Ngalukiye, IT and Coordinator of Youth Peace Club, Congo Peace Network, Democratic Republic of the Congo “I believe the Africa Venture programme has given me the opportunity to face my fears and be bold, and to also leave my comfort zone.” Christianah Oluyomi, Development Officer, Renewvia Energy Group, Nigeria “The Africa Venture programme is unique and result-oriented. Through the programme I was able to meet and learn from the best leaders in both private and public sector who have great influence across the African continent.” John Brian Oyaro, Consultant, Kenya Private Sector Alliance, Kenya “This experience is a beautiful reminder of the talent, passion and power this continent holds in the hearts and minds of the people present.” Jessica Chivinge, Executive Associate (Chief of Staff) to the CEO and Deputy CEO of Discovery Health, Discovery, Zimbabwe “The training is a well designed programme that connects people with different backgrounds and exposes the individual to the current challenges that affect African countries.” Nimatu Siisu, District Programme Coordinator, Camfed Ghana Many participants marvelled at the richness and diversity of the Africa Venture participant group, which brought together people from different backgrounds, countries, sectors, industries and organizations; and, in doing so, exposed participants to a wide range of views, perspectives, experiences and ideas. 88% feel that they are now better able to lead or operate beyond their circle of authority 87% feel better able to contribute to their organization, university or community 15

The Africa Venture provides that experience and a platform to build a global leader who will lead beyond authority.” Noreen Chenesai Mukora, Founder/ CEO, Chenesai, Zimbabwe “The role-play session was of the greatest value to me. It helped me experience and relive the problem the country faced during Ebola. Most importantly, it helped me understand the importance of collaboration between different stakeholders.” Chifum Ukadike, HR Manager, Talent Management, Nestoil Limited, Nigeria Africa needs leaders who can cross all types of cultural boundaries, from geographic to religious, from private sector to voluntary sector. The Africa Venture has created an environment in which people are able to connect across many boundaries and practise collaborative leadership. 91% are better able to spot common ground and make connections between people 87% are able to recognize their biases and minimize their effects 100% are better able to adjust their behaviour to adapt to culturally diverse situations 17
