1. Jason the argonaut
(Jason of Iolcus in Thessaly, the son of the former king of Iolchus Aeson or Eson
and Polymede)
.
Jason was one of the heroes taught by the
centaur Chiron. As a young man Jason went to the
court of his uncle Pelias (son of Tyro and
Poseidon) to reclaim the throne his father had
given his uncle with the proviso that Jason would
become king when he came of age.
2. However, the king was alarmed that a
man with one sandal would cause him to
lose his throne, so he sent Jason away on
what was presumed to be a suicide
mission.. A mission to fetch the golden
fleece from Colchis!!
On sculptures you often see Jason whit
the golden fleece and only one sandal.
3. Jason got help from Hera because she didn’t like Pelias, and
from his friends, including five relatives of Poseidon and
Hecules.
4. Jason must have been a really good
friend…
Friends:
Admetus – cousin to Jason, Acastus – a son of Pelias
and Jason’s cousin (he sailed with Jason against his
fathers wishes), Augeas – King of Elis, Castor – a
horse expert, Echion – a son of Hermes, Erytus – a
son of Hermes, Euphemus – son of Poseidon and was
so fast he could race across water, Hercules – a son
of Zeus, Idas – a son of Poseidon, Idmon – s prophet
and a son of Apollo (Idmon joined crew even though
he knew he would not return alive from the journey),
Periclymenus – a descendent of Poseidon and was
able to change forms, Polydeuces – a son of Zeus and
expert boxer, Neuplius – a descendent of Poseidon
and expert seamen, Meleager – Prince of Calydon,
Orpheus – a son of Apollo and a great musician,
