Club logo, and conference stand.
Designed with reference to HSE house style. Four
A3 patch areas created for RSSC to place new
posters for future events. The stand has been well
received and is in continuous use within HSE’s
headquarters in Bootle.
Greater Manchester
Fire and Rescue Service.
A number of stands, door wraps and signage for
GMFRS, including:
✱✱ A prize-winning five section stand, using
uniforms to show the journey from Volunteer
to Apprentice. Initially for the Labour Party
Conference, five individual pieces of artwork
which fit together allowing scope for use in
different settings.
✱✱ Height guide and bus stop signage featuring
Cracker, the Fire Dog.
✱✱ Irlam Community Fire Station is one of a
new style of combined Emergency Service
Hubs housing Police, Ambulance and Fire
Emergency Response teams, and they wanted
striking photographic wraps to highlight the
cooperation between the three services.
Janssen Pharmaceutical
British HIV Association conference, 2012
Janssen Medical created a concept seminar for the
British HIV Association Conference 2012, based
around University Challenge, and wanted invites,
posters, banners and Powerpoint artwork.
Working with very low resolution photos of
physicians, pharmacists and nursing staff from
two major HIV centres, I used Illustrator artwork to
create simplistic cartoon-like figures of the teams.
The seminar was well attended and received
excellent feedback.

Emergency Response Hub
Wall and window wraps
The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service
wanted a variety of wall coverings and signage for
their newly refurbished ERHub.
The staff in the hub have stressful and responsible
roles; in contrast, they wanted the artwork to be
lively, friendly and colourful.
Artwork had to reflect both the Greater Manchester
region, and the history of the Emergency Response
team. The management team also wanted to create
a sense of belonging, of ‘loving’ working at the
ERHub.
The ERHub team were extremely pleased with the
artwork produced, and I have just completed a
second project along a similar theme but with an
emphasis on International rescue missions for the
Urban Search and Rescue Unit, USAR.

USAR wall and window wraps.
USAR wanted a range of wall graphics for their
offices at GMFRS HQ. These included quotes, a
Periodic table, a range of photographic wall wraps,
table artwork showing locations of a number of
disaster locations around the world and a large
window wrap to cover three walls of a glass office.
The largest part of this project was the window
wrap. Discussions with the client revealed that they
wanted to show various disaster scenes, mostly
in silhouette, with rescue workers standing out
in appropriate colours such as red, orange and
yellow.
✱✱ research on disaster areas shown on the
table map led to initial designs based around
worldwide locations, with famous landmarks
denoting the regions, and illustrations of
actual footage from the disasters.
✱✱ Artwork was created in Illustrator, taking into
account a lot of detail from news reports and
imagery from the disasters attended by USAR.
✱✱ Three designs were presented, and the final
preferred option featured dramatic black and
white landmarks with detailed tracings from
the GMFRS/USAR archive.

GMFRS winter safety campaign HSE Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)
Campaigns
8. Winter Safety Campaign
The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service
wanted a bright and fresh Winter safety campaign.
They wanted to move away from the usual negative
style of marketing around safety and to produce
fun and inviting messages aimed at a variety of
target audiences.
I created a ‘Christmas Jumper’ theme which was
incorporated into three main styles aimed at:
✱✱ older people vulnerable to cold temperatures;
✱✱ dog walkers tempted to walk on frozen water
to save their pets; and
✱✱ young people, to remind them that elderly
relatives and neighbours might need their
help.
Collateral created included:
✱✱ two 8 foot x 3 foot banners for outside fire
stations;
✱✱ panels to be affixed to the Parade Pump
vehicle;
✱✱ a range of desktop wallpapers for computers
and tv screens around the Service, an email
footer, web banners, buttons; and
✱✱ a Powerpoint template for use by schools
to create their own personalised advice to
students.
9. COSHH Campaigns
Health and Safety Executive
To fulfil HSE’s aim to reduce work-related death,
injury and ill health, they regularly publish
information leaflets and information sheets. Most of
these are aimed at workers who do not realise they
are at risk from dangerous chemicals.
For Working with substances hazardous to
health, both the cover and the inner pages needed
to convey how the body is affected by hazardous
substances, as well as examples of substances that
workers don’t expect to cause them any harm.
Visually, the leaflet needed to attract the attention
of a target audience in denial.
I created artwork by combining several stock
images in Photoshop to visually show that
chemicals affect the lungs, skin and pulmonary
systems. Additional images used highlight that
hazardous substances exist as vapour, liquid and
dust as well as to highlight professions likely to be
find themselves at risk.
For Bakers - time to clear the air!, the target
audience included workers who might not speak
English as their first language, and used friendly,
but clear and technically accurate illustrations to
convey how to work safely with flour.
I designed this product as a pocket card,
commissioned illustrations, created roughs and
completed finished artwork for print.
COSHH essentials is a series of online advice
sheets covering hundreds of topics that help
workers avoid exposure to COSHH. I designed
and edited the complete COSHH series containing
approximately 400 sheets.
These are some of the publications that form part
of HSE’s range of priced publications, pocket cards
and leaflets.
Similar information sheets that I worked on cover
Workplace transport, workplace exposure limits,
and the waste industry. Images used in these
projects included commissioned illustrations, stock
and commissioned photography and images from
HSE’s own existing reference.
11. Catalogues for HSE Books
2007 to 2011.
The HSE Books catalogues contain vibrant
images to attract readers attention to important
publications, and easy to follow keys to help them
find the right publication and pricing strategy.
I designed the catalogues, imported data from
Excel spreadsheets, helped to edit, and wrote some
of the marketing copy.
Hallis Hudson Catalogue and
Price Guide 2005 to 2012.
The Hallis Hudson product catalogue contains
colourful cut-out images of hundreds of products,
accurate pricing and product information and is
accompanied by a detailed price guide, updated at
least annually.
Information data sorted then imported from Excel
files and formatted initially using Grep sequences
to speed up processes.

Park Group – Catalogues and
other marketing materials
Each year, the Park Group produce a range of
catalogues and tv adverts, in the UK and Republic
of Ireland, to promote the range of Christmas
schemes they offer. They also create magazines and
newsletters to send to their Agents, and a range of
corporate Love2Choose schemes.
I produced a raft of artwork during the six week
period I was at Park, using Illustrator, Photoshop
and Quark Xpress to create and edit top quality
imagery and imaginative layouts aimed at Park’s
target audience of Christmas Savers.

13. Asbestos Essentials
Health and Safety Executive
Asbestos Essentials is a task manual aimed at
building and maintenance trades and was designed
to work well in print and online formats.
It had been published before, but was redesigned,
updated and printed in this new format to coincide
with HSE’s high profile Asbestos campaign, Hidden
Killer.
The book had to be durable and easy for workers
to carry with them.
Language had to be simple, directive and at a
level suitable for employees and sole traders as
well as managers. Design needed to be clear and
consistent as well as eye catching enough to visibly
target the of trades most at risk.
I designed the printed and online versions, edited
the text, and liaised with HSE inspectors throughout
to ensure accuracy of the information.
The manual was designed with hard-wearing,
laminated, covers which fold out to show an
illustration of where asbestos can be found, and
was ring-bound to allow flat, easy opening to any
page in a working environment.
Existing photography, taken by HSE Inspectors on
site, or specialist Health and Safety Laboratory
photographers was used for this campaign
alongside commissioned and stock photography.
I also designed and provided text for the flyer and
order form.

Marketing Manchester
New Branding guidelines
The Business Growth Hub, part of Marketing
Manchester and Greater Manchester Business
Support, recently updated their branding to give
greater flexibility when designing collateral.
This involves new Service Brand logos, colourways
and creating guidelines for internal and external
designers and advisors.
From an initial two week Freelance contract, I
am now sole designer at Business Growth Hub,
creating a range of marketing collateral including
postcards, business cards, pull-up stands and
advertising materials. My role also includes
ensuring that all campaign material created
externally fits with the Business Growth Hub brand
as well as the Marketing Manchester and Growth
Company Group guidelines.
