STAGE 5
PRODUCTION
REFLECTIONS
Jack Hickman
 This proforma is to record how you worked on your production
 You should complete this each week during production
 Consider all relevant areas that you covered that week
 Think about what worked/what didn’t work/how you can improve
and actions for the following sessions/weeks
 During the first week of production our group designed and
completed the two experiments for our product which was a
visual experiment which tested our ability to record a small
film and the audio experiment which tested our ability to
record clips using an audio recorder and try to fit them with a
silent clip of Shaun of the dead. Both of these experiments
were used to test our ability to edit the clips together as well
and see if we can do a good job with that. The clips were all
relatively easy to make and I didn’t have any issues with
them at all. The same week we also started with our initial
plans and I managed to get two of the slides done however,
this was at the end of the week and I didn’t really have much
issue with these parts of the power-point either which is
good
 The tools I used in the audio and short film were the
selection tool to move the clips around the Premiere file and
the cut tool to cut some of the clips in half.
 The improvements I could have made to this week would
probably be to move quicker with my work because if I don’t
get the work done quick enough then it can create some
issues later on while filming and doing the evaluation as I
may just have less time to do it all. If i can get this sorted out
then I won’t have to worry about falling behind
 I can fulfil this improvement by just getting on with the work
as it comes and try not to get distracted by my peers. I can
also sort this problem out by doing work outside of lesson
such as at home or in the learning centre.
 The goals I need to accomplish for next week are to
complete the initial plans and try to finish the research
PowerPoint so, I have plenty of time to make my production
work and not worry about how much time I have to finish it.
 This week I finished the initial plans PowerPoint and almost finished the
research PowerPoint. The Initial plans PowerPoint had us start the very
basic ideas for our short film in the form of 2 mind maps. The first mind
map would be used to show all the ideas that we had for the short film and
organise them all into sections and if we didn’t have a lot of ideas then we
would just simply brainstorm and put what we found onto the mind map.
This was followed by designing a mood board which would be used to
show the types of colours, settings and general design of the concept we
were trying to get across to our audiences. I selected a bunch of comedy
films that involved a duo of characters as this is what my film is going to
have and analyzed the types of colours that they use and themes that they
use so, my short film should work better as a comedy film. After this we
analyzed them and talked about what we would take over to our short film
before discussing the potential research targets. Following this I moved
onto the research which had us discuss the primary and secondary target
audiences for our short film which was done via a survey I made and a
look at the YouGov website to determine what our target audience should
be for our product to benefit the most from it. This was followed by the
product analysis which I currently haven’t finished yet.
 No tools were used this week as I was just using PowerPoint the whole
week and didn’t use any production apps.
 The improvements that I should make for this week are, again, to try to
finish my work on time which is an issue considering I may be slightly
behind the rest but, I should be able to catch up. I have no other
improvements as the level of detail I put into my work is already fairly good
and I believe that no more needs to be added to it.
 The way I can improve is again by getting on with my work and trying to
get it done as quickly as possible without getting distracted. I should also
do more work in my own time and in the learning centre.
 My goals for next week are to finish the research PowerPoint and move
onto the Proposal and the pre-production so I can be ready to record by
the 4th week
 This week I was able to finish my research PowerPoint
which involved the completion of the existing product
analysis and discussing what I plan to take from the existing
products to help me with my short film. After this I listed the
processes of my experiments and reflecting on each of
them. This was done by looking at the editing and filming
and seeing how well these worked and what I would and
would not take from each process. After this I looked at the
constraints on the short film I was going to make and seeing
if I could quickly rearrange the concept so, it would make the
creation of the short film much easier. Following this I
started and finished the proposal which just had me list the
audiences that I will be targeting, The skills that I have
acquired this year, the story concept that I had created but,
in full detail, the production techniques that I will be using,
how I plan on evaluating my work and the schedule for the
entire project. The proposal was fairly easy to finish and I
am glad that I found it alright to make as well. I had also
started work on the Pre-Production PowerPoint as well but,
I still haven’t finished it yet.
 I didn’t use any tools this week because I was not using any
editing software.
 The improvements that I can make this week are once
again, the timing that I seem to have a huge issue with and
admittedly it kind of irritates me and I wish I could just get
the work done on time.
 I can improve this issue by doing the work at home and in
the learning centre so, I can catch up when I’m behind on
work.
 Next week I will be finishing the pre-production as quickly as
possible and hope that I still have enough time to record.
 This week I started out with finishing off the pre-production
which luckily didn’t take too long to accomplish. The pre-
production had us complete the call sheet, location release
form, shot list, contingency plan, risk assessment and short
film development sheets on black board. The call sheet is
used for showing the cast members and how they can be
contacted for security reasons along with the equipment we
will be using for filming. The location release form is used to
show that we have permission to leave class and record.
The shot list was used to record all of the shots we will be
using in order and what the cast will be doing in each shot;
this also helped to truly finalize the concept of my short film
and makes it much easier when we get to recording. The
contingency plan is used for recording potential issues and
coming up with back up options in case any of these things
happen when filming or during this week. The risk
assessment form is used to show what safety hazards will
show up when recording and list them while coming up with
ways to counteract these problems. The short film
development form was used to finalize the concept for the
short film which will make filming extremely easy. After this,
we had to fill in other areas in the PowerPoint such as the
sounds we will be using and where all of the sounds will go
in the film. This was used to make editing easier. After the
pre-production was done we moved onto filming the short
and helping each other out with theirs. This took quite a
while as some of us needed multiple days to film our clips
and record the audio for them and we managed to get it
done by the end of the week which was good.
 I didn’t use any tools this week as I wasn’t in a editing app to
list any but, I did use a camera, tripod and tried to use focus
and shot techniques too. If that counts.
 There aren’t really any things I can say to improve this week
as all of it was done on time and to good standard too.
 Next week I will be moving onto the editing of the film as
well as the evaluation if it is possible and I hope that I can
get it finished on time.
 This week I was able to finish the editing of the product and it is
now done and exported. Firstly I added the film clips I had
recorded into Adobe Premiere and cut the parts I didn’t need to
match the time limit as much as possible but, it still went over even
when nearly half of the scenes were removed from the final
version which is a shame. The parts that I cut out were some of
the comedy moments that served to stagnate the short film as I felt
that these clips slowed it down and made it too long. Because of
this, the short film lost some of its comedy and felt a little bland in
the final thing but, I discussed this in the evaluation as an issue
that came up. The film was left with just the core clips to show the
plot and in all fairness, it looks rather boring without the scenes to
accompany them and I hate that. I also added in the audio that we
recorded as well to finish it off but, I may have made the audio a bit
too quiet so, it sort of does effect my product to a certain degree
but it is all there; the footsteps, door sounds, teleporting sounds
etc. After this I completed the evaluation which had us list the
strengths and weaknesses for time management, planning and
research which was easy enough to complete. This was followed
by comparing our camera shots, audio shots and how the film was
edited in Post-Production. This was again followed by reviewing
the aesthetic qualities and the audience appeal. After this I had 3
people review my short film and had their opinions on it listed
before discussing what I agreed with and disagreed with about the
reviews and finally stated how I would improve the work.
 The tools I used this week are the selection tool to move the clips
around the Premiere file and the cut tool to cut any clips I didn’t
need. I also used the razor tool as well to remove bits of specific
clips that I didn’t need.
 I feel that I don’t need to make any improvements this week as my
work is done to a good standard and it is all done so, no
improvements here.
 For the next project, I should work on my ability to get all the work
done on time to a good standard so, I don’t end up missing
anything

5. production reflection sf 2017

  • 2.  This proforma is to record how you worked on your production  You should complete this each week during production  Consider all relevant areas that you covered that week  Think about what worked/what didn’t work/how you can improve and actions for the following sessions/weeks
  • 3.  During the first week of production our group designed and completed the two experiments for our product which was a visual experiment which tested our ability to record a small film and the audio experiment which tested our ability to record clips using an audio recorder and try to fit them with a silent clip of Shaun of the dead. Both of these experiments were used to test our ability to edit the clips together as well and see if we can do a good job with that. The clips were all relatively easy to make and I didn’t have any issues with them at all. The same week we also started with our initial plans and I managed to get two of the slides done however, this was at the end of the week and I didn’t really have much issue with these parts of the power-point either which is good  The tools I used in the audio and short film were the selection tool to move the clips around the Premiere file and the cut tool to cut some of the clips in half.  The improvements I could have made to this week would probably be to move quicker with my work because if I don’t get the work done quick enough then it can create some issues later on while filming and doing the evaluation as I may just have less time to do it all. If i can get this sorted out then I won’t have to worry about falling behind  I can fulfil this improvement by just getting on with the work as it comes and try not to get distracted by my peers. I can also sort this problem out by doing work outside of lesson such as at home or in the learning centre.  The goals I need to accomplish for next week are to complete the initial plans and try to finish the research PowerPoint so, I have plenty of time to make my production work and not worry about how much time I have to finish it.
  • 4.  This week I finished the initial plans PowerPoint and almost finished the research PowerPoint. The Initial plans PowerPoint had us start the very basic ideas for our short film in the form of 2 mind maps. The first mind map would be used to show all the ideas that we had for the short film and organise them all into sections and if we didn’t have a lot of ideas then we would just simply brainstorm and put what we found onto the mind map. This was followed by designing a mood board which would be used to show the types of colours, settings and general design of the concept we were trying to get across to our audiences. I selected a bunch of comedy films that involved a duo of characters as this is what my film is going to have and analyzed the types of colours that they use and themes that they use so, my short film should work better as a comedy film. After this we analyzed them and talked about what we would take over to our short film before discussing the potential research targets. Following this I moved onto the research which had us discuss the primary and secondary target audiences for our short film which was done via a survey I made and a look at the YouGov website to determine what our target audience should be for our product to benefit the most from it. This was followed by the product analysis which I currently haven’t finished yet.  No tools were used this week as I was just using PowerPoint the whole week and didn’t use any production apps.  The improvements that I should make for this week are, again, to try to finish my work on time which is an issue considering I may be slightly behind the rest but, I should be able to catch up. I have no other improvements as the level of detail I put into my work is already fairly good and I believe that no more needs to be added to it.  The way I can improve is again by getting on with my work and trying to get it done as quickly as possible without getting distracted. I should also do more work in my own time and in the learning centre.  My goals for next week are to finish the research PowerPoint and move onto the Proposal and the pre-production so I can be ready to record by the 4th week
  • 5.  This week I was able to finish my research PowerPoint which involved the completion of the existing product analysis and discussing what I plan to take from the existing products to help me with my short film. After this I listed the processes of my experiments and reflecting on each of them. This was done by looking at the editing and filming and seeing how well these worked and what I would and would not take from each process. After this I looked at the constraints on the short film I was going to make and seeing if I could quickly rearrange the concept so, it would make the creation of the short film much easier. Following this I started and finished the proposal which just had me list the audiences that I will be targeting, The skills that I have acquired this year, the story concept that I had created but, in full detail, the production techniques that I will be using, how I plan on evaluating my work and the schedule for the entire project. The proposal was fairly easy to finish and I am glad that I found it alright to make as well. I had also started work on the Pre-Production PowerPoint as well but, I still haven’t finished it yet.  I didn’t use any tools this week because I was not using any editing software.  The improvements that I can make this week are once again, the timing that I seem to have a huge issue with and admittedly it kind of irritates me and I wish I could just get the work done on time.  I can improve this issue by doing the work at home and in the learning centre so, I can catch up when I’m behind on work.  Next week I will be finishing the pre-production as quickly as possible and hope that I still have enough time to record.
  • 6.  This week I started out with finishing off the pre-production which luckily didn’t take too long to accomplish. The pre- production had us complete the call sheet, location release form, shot list, contingency plan, risk assessment and short film development sheets on black board. The call sheet is used for showing the cast members and how they can be contacted for security reasons along with the equipment we will be using for filming. The location release form is used to show that we have permission to leave class and record. The shot list was used to record all of the shots we will be using in order and what the cast will be doing in each shot; this also helped to truly finalize the concept of my short film and makes it much easier when we get to recording. The contingency plan is used for recording potential issues and coming up with back up options in case any of these things happen when filming or during this week. The risk assessment form is used to show what safety hazards will show up when recording and list them while coming up with ways to counteract these problems. The short film development form was used to finalize the concept for the short film which will make filming extremely easy. After this, we had to fill in other areas in the PowerPoint such as the sounds we will be using and where all of the sounds will go in the film. This was used to make editing easier. After the pre-production was done we moved onto filming the short and helping each other out with theirs. This took quite a while as some of us needed multiple days to film our clips and record the audio for them and we managed to get it done by the end of the week which was good.  I didn’t use any tools this week as I wasn’t in a editing app to list any but, I did use a camera, tripod and tried to use focus and shot techniques too. If that counts.  There aren’t really any things I can say to improve this week as all of it was done on time and to good standard too.  Next week I will be moving onto the editing of the film as well as the evaluation if it is possible and I hope that I can get it finished on time.
  • 7.  This week I was able to finish the editing of the product and it is now done and exported. Firstly I added the film clips I had recorded into Adobe Premiere and cut the parts I didn’t need to match the time limit as much as possible but, it still went over even when nearly half of the scenes were removed from the final version which is a shame. The parts that I cut out were some of the comedy moments that served to stagnate the short film as I felt that these clips slowed it down and made it too long. Because of this, the short film lost some of its comedy and felt a little bland in the final thing but, I discussed this in the evaluation as an issue that came up. The film was left with just the core clips to show the plot and in all fairness, it looks rather boring without the scenes to accompany them and I hate that. I also added in the audio that we recorded as well to finish it off but, I may have made the audio a bit too quiet so, it sort of does effect my product to a certain degree but it is all there; the footsteps, door sounds, teleporting sounds etc. After this I completed the evaluation which had us list the strengths and weaknesses for time management, planning and research which was easy enough to complete. This was followed by comparing our camera shots, audio shots and how the film was edited in Post-Production. This was again followed by reviewing the aesthetic qualities and the audience appeal. After this I had 3 people review my short film and had their opinions on it listed before discussing what I agreed with and disagreed with about the reviews and finally stated how I would improve the work.  The tools I used this week are the selection tool to move the clips around the Premiere file and the cut tool to cut any clips I didn’t need. I also used the razor tool as well to remove bits of specific clips that I didn’t need.  I feel that I don’t need to make any improvements this week as my work is done to a good standard and it is all done so, no improvements here.  For the next project, I should work on my ability to get all the work done on time to a good standard so, I don’t end up missing anything
