Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences. PowerPoint allows students to engage audiences through dynamic multimedia presentations of information. Websites like SlideShare and KeepVid and image search engines like Google Images can be used with PowerPoint. A literature class discusses John Updike's short story "A&P" analyzing elements like character, setting, plot, point of view, symbolism, theme, style, tone and irony. The story is told from the first-person point of view of Sammy, a checkout clerk at a grocery store, who quits his job after the store manager embarrasses three girls.

17. Tone Colloquial language gives Sammy the mellow tone of a teenage boy until the store manager embarrasses the girls. Here, the tone switches to a narrator who resents the conservative, grown up world, so he quits.

18. Irony: Failed Superhero Sammy quits to defend the girls’ honor, but they never hear him, and they don’t know that he sacrificed himself for them. Sammy hopes to feel triumphant about quitting, but doesn’t.
