This document provides instructions for performing a DIY gravity flush of a water heater in 5 steps: 1) disconnect the water heater from its power source, 2) turn off the water source, 3) drain the water from the tank by opening the drain and T&P valves, 4) refill the tank by closing the valves and turning the water back on, and 5) re-connect the power source. Performing an annual gravity flush helps prolong the efficiency and lifespan of the water heater by draining built-up sediment and debris. Common water heater failures are caused by high water pressure, calcium and sediment buildup, corrosion debris, or faulty heating elements.
