5. pArTners
Leon van Baal
Leon van Baal qualified in Company Law and Tax Law at the University of Leiden. He studied taxation of
US corporations and pass-through entities at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, USA. He also obtained
an LL.M. degree in advanced international taxation at Leiden University. He started his career in 1990 and
gained about 10 yearsâ experience in the general tax practice at the present Loyens & Loeff and Ernst &
Young in the Netherlands. Leon was in charge of the Ernst & Young Dutch desk in the Netherlands Antilles
from 1996 to 1998. In 1999, Leon established his own tax law firm, Van Baal International Tax Services,
based in The Hague/Wassenaar. This firm has been merged into Luminous Tax Matters N.V.
Leon advises companies and wealthy individuals on national and international tax issues. His client
portfolio comprises a number of listed and non-listed multinational companies, including one of the
leading EU mobile telecom operators and a large-scale manufacturer of building materials.

Michel Bilars
Michel Bilars qualified in Tax Law at the University of Leiden. He started his career in 1995 and
gained experience as international tax advisor at Ernst & Young. This included a secondment
to the New York office. Michel joined the KPMG Meijburg & Co corporate and international
tax practice in 2001. As a member of the Transaction Services Group within this firm, he has
coordinated a large number of M&A processes. Michel mainly advises companies on national
and international tax issues, such as restructurings, mergers, acquisitions and employee
benefit schemes. His client portfolio includes a number of quoted and non-quoted
multinational companies active in fields such as the chemical industry, pharmaceutical
industry, private-equity investments, consumer electronics and property. Michel also
advises on financing and royalty structures.

pharmaceutical industry, private equity investments and real estate.
7. Huub Laauwen
Huub started his career in 1987 as an international tax lawyer with the present-day Loyens & Loeff. In 1996
he became the in-house Head of Tax for a multinational group of companies with security and facility
management operations in more than 50 countries. He was responsible for all tax matters and played
a leading role in the team of tax professionals that managed the merger between this group and another
quoted company. Huub is an expert on major international taxation, with specialised knowledge on cross-
border (re)structuring and planning, transfer pricing, tax due diligence, cross-border financing, mergers and
acquisitions, joint ventures, and corporate reorganisations. Thanks to his being an international tax lawyer
combined with considerable experience as an in-house tax counsellor, Huub is able to understand and
advise international companies on their worldwide tax strategies, policies and planning.
Huub is a member of the Dutch Association of Tax Advisors (NOB), the International Bar Association
(IBA) and the International Fiscal Association (IFA).

Ivo Vreman
Ivo Vreman started his career in 1997 and was a tax advisor with KPMG Meijburg & Co in their
corporate and international tax practice. As a member of KMPG Meijburg Transaction Services
Group, Ivo was involved in a large number of M&A projects. He also gained business experience
as a tax manager at Credit Suisse (Zurich, Switzerland) and Royal Philips Electronics in the
Netherlands. The fact that Ivo has gained experience in a multinational corporate environment
as well as at a Big Four tax consultancy firm makes for a valuable combination, resulting in a
quick and thorough understanding of international business processes and the ability to
provide added-value advice in respect of our clientsâ day-to-day business operations and
their strategic business decisions. Ivo advises companies on national and international tax
(re-)structurings, mergers, acquisitions and the setting up of joint ventures. His client portfolio
includes a number of stock-quoted companies active in fields such as consumer electronics,
manufacturing services and the chemical industry. Ivo also advises on financing and royalty
companies and transfer pricing-related issues.
