Israel has becomea high-tech superpower over the past two decades and continues strong growth
Israel has emerged as one of the world’s leading centers for the development of innovative and start-up
companies, with 4,800 high-tech startups in the country today, Israel is known as the ”startup nation.” Of
those 4,800, about 700 are VC backed. The rest are bootstrapped, Microsoft’s Tzahi Weisfeld, senior
director of Microsoft global startup group in Tel Aviv, told Business Insider.
The country has by far the highest proportion of any country of new patents in this sector per head of the
population i.e. more startups per capita than any other country, and No. 2 in actual numbers after the
United States. It all adds up to a nation of people who can create hardware, gadgets and apps and who
have the confidence to leave good jobs and launch companies.
In recent years, Israel’s start-up industry attracted increasing amounts of foreign investment. This is
achieved through VC funds, IPOs and direct investments from major US and international companies.
Some of the Israeli startups are leading cross-border mass payout company, with solutions for both
Fortune 100 companies as well as dedicated small businesses. As of today, few of them have started
looking up for setting up their representative offices internationally, like myThings Ltd, Dolphin Software
Ltd, Payoneer Inc., in accordance with the Israel startup map.
In September 2011, Powermat and Procter & Gamble Company partnership has spawned one of the
country’s most promising joint venture-Duracell Powermat. Established in 2006,Powermat Technologies
Ltd. launched their 1st
product in response to the explosion of electronic devices flooding today’s market
and the growing need to provide a simple, smart, efficient and clutter-free approach for powering devices.
Another veteran Israeli Start-up company is SolarEdge Technologies Ltd, initially established in 2006,
SolarEdge provided the world’s first end-to-end Distributed Solar Power Harvestingand PV Monitoring
solution, allowing maximum energy production for faster return on investment.
Now that young Israeli companies are applying their technical brilliance to consumer products as much as
to designing semiconductors or developing computer-security software, broader skills matter more. One
good sign is the emergence of some Israeli companies that are concentrating on providing content for the
internet rather than just the plumbing.
Apart from the identified areas with high growth potential, such as water management, agricultural
science, alternative energy and of course security, in which Israel already has world-beating technology,
the companies are thinking hard on more innovative solutions in other fields as well and has developed
technologies varying from innovative solution for e-Commerce to simplicity of search with the mobility of
apps–virtual currency monetization–Video Widgets–electro optical system–portable video-over-cellular
solutions, etc.
Israelis are rightly proud of their high-tech miracle. Dan Senor and Saul Singer called Israel “The Start-
Up Nation” in a book of that name in 2009. The label has stuck because it fits. Undoubtedly, Israel as a
hub of innovation is a perfect example of “Necessity is the mother of… INNOVATION”.
