1. This internship consists on upgrading the Naval
Postgraduate School’s library web based catalog discovery
layer. The updating process will be composed of
configuring and customizing the web interface, exporting
and importing library records, connecting with third party
applications, security and automation. An open source
discovery software titled Vufind will be used to achieve
these tasks. Vufind is a library resource portal designed to
enable your users to search and browse through all of
your library’s resources which can include digital library
items and catalog records. Vufind will be installed into a
RHEL (red hat enterprise linux) which is linux based and
configured to fit the Naval Postgraduate School
requirements. The implementation of upgrading the
library discovery layer will have an end result of bug fixes,
faster response time, and adding new functions into the
web interface.
The project was formulated by a group of three
colleagues (Mentor, Intern, and IT Specialist). Each
group member was assigned to different roles. The
intern was assigned to install, configure, customize,
and documenting the updating process with the help
of the other two colleagues. Most of the updating
process was done using an iMac running OS X
operating system. A terminal application providing a
command line interface was additionally used to run
the proper command in order to obtain the new
version of the open source discovery software Vufind.
The documentation was done using Microsoft word.
The Mentor for the project supervised the intern to
make sure the process went smoothly. In addition the
Mentor assisted with the configuration process by
providing handouts with correct syntax input. If both
intern and mentor were stuck in a specific step the IT
specialist provided his input on a solution that can
help the project/obstacle pass.
The implementation of the new version of the discovery
software titled Vufind is identical to the current Vufind
installation on the surface, but the updated version
provides more functionality. Improved functionality
includes simpler install process, minor bug fixes, and
improvements. Installation had been made simpler with
implantation of the upgraded version of Vufind by adding a
collapsible configuration interface which helps narrow
down needed files that still need editing. An improvement
brought forward by the updated version Vufind is a courses
reserve search function that can help users find a more
precise search result. A clear correlation between the
current and updated version can be seen from an outside
prospective, but underneath both differ in functionality.

The download and installation were successfully
completed before the due date. A couple trial and
errors encountered along the way because of a few
configuration issues. The issues were resolved by
uninstalling and reinstalling the Vufind package.
After installation the process for setting up the
update Vufind interface was straightforward. With
proper configuration within Vufind files the
interface was able to emulate the current Naval
Postgraduate School search catalog. .
Implementation of New Upgraded Discovery Software:
Vufind
The goal is to aid current Naval Postgraduate School
students in their research studies by upgrading the
school’s library discovery layer with proper configurations
in Vufind. Upgrading the library website will provide a
helpful resource for students. The new upgraded library
website will contribute to a process where students can
be more time efficient when constructing assignments
given that the upgrades will assist the library website
speed.

The first process of the project was to download the
Vufind updated package. A step by step document
found on the Vufind website was followed to
download and install the package A terminal was used
to run commands needed for the process.
This interface was mostly used for narrowing down
particular configuration issues with files in the updated
package of Vufind. The process was to inspect certain
errors and go into the specific file presenting the problem. EMAIL
