4. Constitution of the Italian

•The school is open to everyone.
•The lower education, given at least for eight
years, is compulsory and free.
• The capable and deserving, even if hard
up, have the right to reach the highest levels
of education.
5. The Republic implements this right with
scolarships, family allowances and other
supports, that must be attributed with a
public competition.
6. The Italian system of education is divided into:
Nursery school: from two and a half up to six
Primary school: from six to eleven
First Grade Secondary School (First Cycle): from
eleven to fourteen
Second Grade Secondary school (High school): from
fourteen to nineteen
8. Second Grade Secondary school : only from 14 to 16
Compulsory
Primary school and First Grade Secondary school ( 6 – 14)
Not compulsory
Infant school ( 2- 6 )
9. After sixteen, education can
continue out of school, until
eighteen, through compulsory
training (apprenticeship)
10. EXAMINATIONS
At the end of the First Grade the examination
consists in three written tests and one oral
test, on all subjects.
The required competences are assessed by an
examining board made up of internal teachers
and presided by an external member.
11. Second Grade (High school):
Since 1st September 2010, High school has had a
new organization:
•Licei
•Technical schools subdivided into 2 sectors with
11 courses
•Training schools subdivided into 2 sectors and 6
courses
12. : Licei are schools attended for five years and are
composed of two two-years courses and one final in-
depth study year.
They are divided into seven different courses:
- artistic
- classic
- economic
- language
- music and art of dancing
- scientific
- humanistic
13. :
• The training school lasts five years and is
composed of two two-years courses and one in-
depth study final year , with 11 courses:
1. Administration, finance and marketing
2. Tourism
3. Mechanics, Mechatronics and Energy
4. Transports and Logistics
5. Electronics and Electrotechnics
6. ITC and Telecommunication
7. Graphics and Communication
8. Chemistry, Materials and Biotechnologies
9. Fashion
10. Agriculture and Agroindustry
11. Construction, Environment and Territory
14. Vocational education
Each region is entitled to provide it and it may last
at least three years
School-Job alternation
After the age of fifteen, students can
acquire competences with periods of alternation
between education and job. So it is possible that
they have the possibility of a short period of
personal working experience.
