Biblical & Theological Basis for Rugby For Christ Ministries
KingdomRugbyisa non-profitorganizationthatisbasedinBloomington,Indiana.We believe thatthere
needstobe firmbasisin Biblical scripture andinsounddoctrine whenitcomestodoingministry,no
matterin whatcontextof ministrythatsomeone isin.Thisareais nottakenlightlyandthere ishasbeen
much thoughtandprayer andresearchto produce whatwe believe isthe theologicalandBiblical basis
of oursports ministry.
Firstand foremost,we believe itisvital thatwe state whatwe believe tobe ourBiblical/Theological
basisas a sports ministry.
1. We believe inGodthe Father,JesusChristHisSon,andthe HolySpiritandthat all three are
eternal
 I Corinthians8:6“Yet forus there is only there is only God,the Fatherfromwhomareall
thingsand forwhomwe exist, and oneLord,JesusChrist, through whomareall things
and through whomweexist”
 John14:16 “And I will askthe Father, and He will give you anotherHelper,to be with you
forever”
 John1:1 “In the beginning wastheWord, and the Word waswith God,and the Word
wasGod”
2. We believe thatJesusbeingfullyGodandfullyhumancame tothisearth, was bornof a virgin,
livedanddied,andthenrose fromthe deadafterthree daysand thenascendedintoheaven.
 Isaiah7:14 “Therefore theLord Himself should shallgive you a sign;Behold,a virgin shall
conceive, and bear a son,and shall call his nameImmanuel”
 Philippians2:8“And be found in human form,Hehumbled Himself by becoming
obedientto thepoint of death, even death on the cross”
4
 Mark 16:6 “Don’tbe alarmed”he said.“You are looking forJesusof Nazarene,who was
crucified. He hasrisen! He is nothere. See theplace where they laid him”
3. We believe thatGodhas calledusto fulfill the greatcommissionthatHe gave us inthe Bible,to
share His Gospel tothe endsof the earthand withall people, andtoshare the Light of Christto
othersinthisworld.
 “Then Jesuscameto themand said, “All authority in heaven and on earth hasbeen given
to me. Therefore go and makedisciples of all nations, baptizing themin the nameof the
Fatherand of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching themto obey everything Ihave
commanded you.And surely Iamwith you always,to thevery end of the age.”
4. We believe thatGodcan use anyone inany contexttobe a lightforChristand byeitherwords
or actions, share the love of Christto others, nomatter how youngor old
 Psalm92:12-14 “The righteouswill flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of
Lebanon;planted in the houseof the LORD, they will flourish in the courtsof ourGod.
They will still bearfruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green”
 I Timothy4:12 “Let no onedespise you foryouryouth, butsetthe believers an example
in speech,in conduct,in love,in faith,in purity”
Philosophical Basis for Rugby For Christ’s Ministries
We believe thatoutBiblical anddoctrinal beliefscomesthe philosophyonwhichwe use tohelpusto
operate ourministrytothe standard that God callsusto uphold. We believethatourphilosophyneeds
to be basedinScripture and that we allow the Holy Spirittoinfluenceandwork.
1. One way thatwe believe thatGodhas calledusto doas non-profitorganizationistoshare the
lightof Christand spreadand preachthe Gospel to all people andnations, whereveritbe
throughour wordsor actions
5
 Psalm96:3 “Declare his glory among thenations, hismarvelousworksamong allthe
peoples!”
2. Anotherwaythat we believe Godhascalledusto serve isbyallowingGodto use inwhatever
wayHe seesfit,whereverthatbe leadingsomeonetocommittheirlivestoChristforthe first
time or byhelpingthemgodeeperintheirrelationshipthroughChristbydiscipleshipand
mentoring
 Luke 15:10 “In the sameway,Itell you, there is rejoicing in the presenceof the angelsof
God overonesinner who repents."
 Proverbs 27:17 “As ironsharpensiron, so onepersonsharpensanother”
3. A thirdway we believe thatwe are calledtocome alongside the people thatGodputs inour
path,especiallyyouthwhoare undersomuchnegative influence,andwalkalongwiththemin
life, helpingthemtogrowor come to know relationshipwithChrist.
 Galatians6:2 “Bear oneanother’sburdens, and so fulfillthe law of Christ”
4. Finally,we believe thatitisimportantthatinall thingswe accept instructionandcontinue to
learnand growwithour relationshipwithGod,eventhroughtimesof correctionand
instruction.
 II Timothy3:16-17 “All Scriptureis breathed outby God and profitableforteaching, for
reproof, forcorrection, and fortraining in righteousness, thattheman of God may be
competent,equipped forevery good work”

Fundraising Letter
DearFriends,
As you all know, I love the sport of rugby and have always wanted to use that love for the glory of God. Well, I
have great news!! I had the opportunity to apply and interview for a coaching position at Kingdom Rugby and
have just received word that I have been offered the full-time coaching position with them coaching one of
the competitive travel teams. It is amazing how God has been able to use the passion I have for the sport of
rugby and is allowing me to use to further the Kingdom of God!! He has confirmed that this is His will for my
life currently through scripture, counsel from others, and prayer.
Kingdom Rugby is based out of Bloomington, Indiana and was founded in 2007. They focus on sharing the
Gospel of Jesus Christ through the sport of Rugby so that people can come to know Jesus Christ as their own
personal savior, and begin a relationship with Him. They also want to see communities impacted positively
and transformed, which can only happen through the power of Jesus Christ.
Kingdom Rugby has several different strategieswhen it comes to sharing the Gospel, but the avenue that I
have been chosen to do will be through coaching. As a coach of Kingdom Rugby I will have the opportunity
and privilege to teach and help deepen the relationship with Christ that the future players I will coach have.
Other aspects of this job will include:
 Help organize games and tournaments for the team
 Recruit and scout players
 Develop and help organize/lead devotionals for the team
 Disciple and mentor players
While I am very excited for this opportunity and that I have been offered this job, I do not want to embark on
this adventure alone. I would love if you guys would consider partnering with me. Most importantly, I would
love for you all to become part of my prayer team, and if you feel called, part of my financial team as well.
Even though this is a paid position, I will still need to raise about $5000 a year to cover some of the costs that
I and the other coaches will have to take on, by becoming coaches of traveling teams.
Please not the response card and the endorsed envelope. If you have any questions, please contact me. I
would love to talk and meet with you personally and answer and explain more about Kingdom Rugby and its
mission that I have the privilege to now be a part of. You can also contact me at 1-765-777-6565 or by email
at coachissac@kingdomrugby.com
May God bless and keep you all!
-Isaac

Is competitiongoodorbadin a sportsministrycontext?
Thisis a questionthathasbeendebatedbackandforth fora longtime withinChristianitywhen
it comesto approachingsportsministry. The opinionsonthistopicare quite variedandeachsports
ministryhasa differenttake onwhatis rightand whatis not.
An argumentforwhycompetitionisgoodwithinthe contextof sportsministryisthatthere
needstobe winnersandlosers,because kidstodayneedtolearnhow tofail andsometimesare
greatestlearningandgrowthcan come throughreproof andcorrection.Anotherpointthatisgivenon
thisside of the argumentisthat competitiondrivesexcellence, anditwill helpkidsdevelopexcellence
not onlyinsport,but inspiritual aspectsaswell.
An argumentagainstcompetitionwithinthe contextof sportsministryisthatcompetitionisnot
the pointof the sportsministry.Itismore importantto focuson the ministryaspectof things, andjust
use sport as a meansto accomplishthatgoal. Some people are alsoconcernedthatcompetitionbrings
out the worstin people, notthe bestanditwouldbe bettertojustplaythe sportwitha focus on
improvementanddevelopingthe spiritualside of the people whocome tothe sportsministry.
My ownviewpointonthisissue isthatcompetitionisgoodforthe sportsministrycontext,
thoughI do understandthe otherside of the argument.Ibelieve thatcompetitioncanbe reallygoodfor
us whenwe dosportsministry, andI have heardstoriespersonallyfromothersinthe sportsministry
field, thatreasontheywere able towitnessandshare the Gospel withotherswasdue tothe fact they
were competitive andcouldplayandbeatotherteams.
How wouldyouattempttopersuade someone inyourchurchof the value of sports ministry?
30
I wouldattempttopersuade themby pointingoutthatsportsis one of the universal languages
of the world(otherbeingmusic) andbecause of this, sportscanhave an huge impacton othersfor
Christ, because itwill attractpeople whomaynotnecessarilybe opentothe Gospel throughmore
traditional methodsof ministry.
I wouldsaythat sportsgive a great opportunityforrelational witnessingandthatforsome
people;youneedtogetalongside of themandbuildrelationshipswiththem.Theyneedtosee thatyou
genuinelycare andwant toinvestintheirlives, before theywill become opentohearingaboutthe
Gospel.Sportsandrecreational ministryare greattoolstouse to do that.
A thirdreasonisthat sportsand recreationministryhave value isthatitallowschurchesto
appeal toall people regardlessof age andbackground. These ministriescanbe adaptedforany age and
for space, whichallowsthe churchto impactpeople across the boardand not justone or twodifferent
groupsof people.
What are the similaritiesanddifferencesbetweenchurch-basedandparachurchsportsministry?
One similaritythatbothchurch-basedandparachurchsportsministrieshave isthatina sense,
theystill bothhave the same general missioninmind, whichistouse athleticsandathletestoshare the
Gospel of Christ.
Anothersimilarityisthatbothtry to findthe correct balance betweenthe sportsandministry
sidesof sportsministry.Bothwantto dosports to the bestof theirability, butalsowantto share the
Gospel or showChristthroughtheiractionstothe bestof theirabilityaswell.
Theyboth relyonvolunteerstohelpthemaccomplishdifferenteventsandprogramsthatthey
do.They recognize the importance thatvolunteershave.Theybothalsohave afocuson discipleshipand
31
growingnewbelieversintheirfaith,butalsogrowingtheirownfaithaswell,throughavenueslike
discipleshipandmentoring.
Theyare alsodifferentinsome waysaswell.Withchurchbasedsportsministry,youcan
generallysee amore communitybasedsportsmissionfocus,becausethe churchesstrategyformissions
isdifferentthanthatof a parachurchsports ministry. The peopleworkingatthe church sportsministry
are generallypaidstaff andtheycanalsohave insome cases, betterfollow upwithpeopletheyare
workingwith.Theycanalsohave more of a focus onbringingpeople intotheirlocal church.
In parachurch sportsministry, there canbe more of a focuson outreachthanon disciplining,it
can be more importanttomeetpeople where theyare atand helpthem, evenif forjusta shortwhile.
Generally, people whoare inparachurchsportsministrieshave todosome type of fundraising, evenif
they do have a small salary.Anotherdifference isthatyoucan see a biggervarietyof sportsministries,
because theyinsome sense have toadaptto whateverareatheyare workingin.
Otherfocusescan include the structure of the sportsministry, the targetaudience, the
denominational beliefsof the sportsministry, andhow longtheyworkina certainarea.
What are the strengthsandweaknessesof differentkindsof evangelism?
The three maintypesof evangelismthatwe hearaboutour proclamation, confrontational, and
relational andeachof these differenttypesof evangelismhave theirdifferentstrengthsand
weaknesses.
A strengththatproclamationevangelismhasisitcan be usedto influence large groupsof
people andcana longlastingeffectonpeople,thoughthe outreachmaylastonlya shorttime.An
example of someonewhohaddone thistype of evangelismforyearswouldbe BillyGraham.A
weaknessthatproclamationevangelismhasisthat there isn’treallygreatfollow up.People maycome
32
and have a great encounterwithGod,butthendo nothave anyone to come alongand helpdisciple
themand helptheirfaithgrow.
A secondtype of evangelismisconfrontational evangelism.Thistype of evangelismisgenerally
done coldturkey. One personorperhapsa group of people will gotoplaceslike parks, beaches, orother
publicareasand justask people aboutGodandif theybelieve inGod.A strengththatthistype of
evangelismhasisthatit allowssome peopletogetmetwhere they’re atandallowsGod to use
someone tospeakdirectlyintosomeone’slife.Anotherstrengthisthere are alotof differentwaysto
approach andtry to talk withsomeone, thereare toolslike the colorlessbookorsoccerball,or
evangelismcube.
A weaknessof thistype of evangelismisthatitcan come across as veryinyour face and not a
lotof people appreciatethat.Itcan alsobe veryintimidatingtodo, because youdonot know how
someone willreact. There isgenerallynotalot of follow upwithpeople whoacceptJesusChristorwho
are at leastinterestedinknowingmore.
The third type of evangelismisrelational evangelism.Thistype of evangelismcanbe done by
almostanyone,because the focusaboutformingrelationshipswithpeople whodon’tknow Christ.A
strengthof thistype of evangelismisthatyouhave the abilitytodiscipleshipandmentorpeopleand
helpthemif theyhave anyquestionsaboutGodor salvation.
A disadvantage tothistype of evangelismisthatitcan be hardto judge if there will be achange
inthe personorpeoplesheartwhoyouworkinglivingalongside andthe focuscan shiftfromthe
spiritual anditcan be justbecome abouthangingoutand beingfriendsandnotreallyeverconfronting
someone abouttheirneedforChrist.

Shouldyoubeginsupport-raisingbefore youhave decidedwhichministrytoworkwith?Whyor why
not?
I thinkthat itmightbe start to makinga listof possible contactsbeforesupportraising, and
eveninghavinginitialconversationswithpeople whoare close toyou aboutpossiblysupportingyouin
the future, butI do not believe itissmartto beginsupportraisingbeforedecidingwhichministryto
workwith.
One reasonthat I thinkthisisthat a lot of people wanttoknow whatyou are doingandwhat
God has calledyoutodo, before theydecide tosupportyou. If youare not reallysure aboutwhatGod is
callingyouto do,it seemstome, people wouldhave ahardertime be willingtosupportyoufinically.
Theywant to see where theirmoneyisbeinginvestedandusedtospreadthe Gospel of Christ, andthey
cannot alwayssee thatif youdo not know whatagencyyou are planningonworkingfor.
A secondreasonof whyI believeone shouldwaitisthatonce youknow whichorganizationyou
are workingfor,if people decide tosupportyou, itcan be tax deductable forthem, whichissomethinga
lotof people wanttohave. If theystart supportingyoupersonallybefore youjoinaministry, thatoption
isno longerthere.
People alsowantconcrete facts, theywanttoknow what youwill be doing, where will yoube,
and howmuch will youneed, andagood amountof people inmyopinion, wouldnotbe comfortable

Guest Reflection Paper #6
Background
When Greg Linville started in ministry, using sports to do ministry was a foreign concept. He started
with the YMCA and learned that ministry seemed most effective when he “had a ball in one hand and a Bible
in the other”. He has coached at six different high schools in Ohio and at Malone University during the 1980’s
and Geneva College. He has worked in both church and para- ministry settings.
Abstract Summary
One of Greg Linville’s main points is that sports ministry is seeing declines across the board and the
reasons for this. One reason he gave was that sports ministry “has not filled the expectations and promises”,
due in part to decline of Christianity in the United States. Another reason he gave was that the local church as
a whole hasn’t grown through the avenue of sports and recreation ministry. Healso focused on three main
issues during his talk. The first one was, is Competition Theologically Sound?
He talked about if it is theologically sound, then sports arebiblical. Though, he said Christians have
thought competition is evil and have not done it, so now at a crossroads about how deal with the issue of
competition.
The second main issue was that of “Sunday Sports” and what are the issues and addressing and
answering the questions and agreements that surround this issue and how one’s opinion of this is dependent
on how they view things like the Sabbath, the Lord’s day, Outreach, and the view of church.
The third main issue he talked about in the realm of sports ministry was that of “gender issues.” He
talked about when it comes to this issue, our biblical foundation is will influence what we decide to do. He
45
did say that we need to love and show that the person has value, and “love them into a place where they can
hear and believe God’s truth”. He also said on a practical level, that we need to make recreational
transgender friendly, and not build things specifically for men and women.
He also briefly discussed the three levels of structure for sports and recreation ministry, which starts
with the “why” (Theology), the “When, Where & to Whom” (Philosophy), and the “what” (methodology).
Speaker Experiences
Greg first told a story during his background about a church that was doing a good job with its
methodology, but was also helping develop believers to full spiritual maturity and how God blessed that
ministry and how the church grew from about 200 people to 2500 people. He also told the story of Eric
Liddell, an athlete who did not raceon Sundays, and because of that, there was a movie called “Chariots of
Fire” made about him and since the movie is considered a classic, he now has a greater witness.
Personal Reflections and Questions
I thought that Greg Linville did a good job talking about how we need to have a Biblical and
foundation and how that is what influences everything else that we do within sports in recreation ministry.
Though it did seem he focused a lot on the negatives of sports ministry, but did not seem (to me anyway)
give a ton of practicaladvice about how to change it.
Actions
One practical takeawayis that I can start researching what is my biblical basis for wanting to do sports
ministry, because that will influence what I do. Another practical step is start searching into internships and
conferences and start building a network of people and organizations.

Guest Reflection Paper #8
Background
Joel Trainergrewupin Africauntil the age of 12. He thenmovedtoOhioand thenlatermoved

opportunitytoworkfor the DetroitPistonsorcontinue toplaysoccerand was eventuallyledtoworkat
Kanakukcamps.Shay RobbinsgrewupinIowaand livedforthe worldforabout a decade,thenthrough
hisfirstjob,a colleague startedtodisciple himandeventuallyledhimtothe Lord.He thenwas ledto
camp ministry.Kanakukwasformedin1926 and thenKidsacrossAmerica(asisterorganization) was
formedlater.
Abstract Summary
WhenJoel andShay were speaking,theyfocusonwantingpeoplewho“LoveJesus,love
discipleship,and love sportand outdoors”.Theyalsodiscussedthe missionstatementof Kanakuk,which
is“DevelopingdynamicChristianleadersthroughlife andchangingexperiences,Godlyrelationships,and
spiritual training”.Theysaidtheyaccomplishtheirmissionstatementbymaking sure thatat the camps,
the focusis on God andnot on the outside world.Anotherpointtheyfocusedonwasthe importance of
makingsure that the childrenhave ansafe environment, spiritual development(whichisthe mainfocus
of theirprogramming),and thenthatthe camp isaffordable. Finally, theytalkedabouttheirview of
competitionandhowtheyviewfromahealthyChristianview,thatitisimportanttohave winnersand
50
losers, because the greatestgrowthcanhappenedduringthe timesof reproof andcorrectionandthat
competitiondrivesexcellence.
Speaker Experiences
I thinkone storythat stuck outto me while Joel andShaywere speakingwasthe storyof Nathan
Stanton,and howislife wasinfluencedatKanakuk,thatGodtook someone wholivinginsinforthis
worldand changedhimtosomeone whodesiresGod,eventhoughthe college he isatsaysdifferent.
The storiesof the how Joel andShaywere bothledto Kanakukalsostuckout, because even
thoughtheirstorieswere different,itstill showedhow Godworkedintheirlives.
Personal Reflections and Questions
I reallylike howengagingJoel andShaywere whentheyspoke andhow theyinvolvedusinto
theirdiscussionandthroughthatgave us practical advice andat the same time, taughtus how to do
that.
I thoughtit wasalsocool howtheyrun the Kanakukcamps. It seemedtome that theyhada
goodbalance of campsthat were competitionfocusedandhow some are more recreational focused,
but regardlessof howcompetitive andsportfocusedis,thatthe firstfocusisalwaysonGod.
Actions
One actionthat we can dobaseduponwhat theytalkedaboutislearnmore aboutKanakuk.I
planon attendingthe informational meetingthattheyare hostingsothat I can learnmore about the
camp. AnotherthingthatI can do isstart keepingalistof differentsportsandrecreationalministries
that I wouldbe interestedin, sothatI can have a database of differentagenciesthatIcan prayabout
and see whatdoorsGod opens.

  • 3. 3 Biblical & Theological Basis for Rugby For Christ Ministries KingdomRugbyisa non-profitorganizationthatisbasedinBloomington,Indiana.We believe thatthere needstobe firmbasisin Biblical scripture andinsounddoctrine whenitcomestodoingministry,no matterin whatcontextof ministrythatsomeone isin.Thisareais nottakenlightlyandthere ishasbeen much thoughtandprayer andresearchto produce whatwe believe isthe theologicalandBiblical basis of oursports ministry. Firstand foremost,we believe itisvital thatwe state whatwe believe tobe ourBiblical/Theological basisas a sports ministry. 1. We believe inGodthe Father,JesusChristHisSon,andthe HolySpiritandthat all three are eternal  I Corinthians8:6“Yet forus there is only there is only God,the Fatherfromwhomareall thingsand forwhomwe exist, and oneLord,JesusChrist, through whomareall things and through whomweexist”  John14:16 “And I will askthe Father, and He will give you anotherHelper,to be with you forever”  John1:1 “In the beginning wastheWord, and the Word waswith God,and the Word wasGod” 2. We believe thatJesusbeingfullyGodandfullyhumancame tothisearth, was bornof a virgin, livedanddied, andthenrose fromthe deadafterthree daysand thenascendedintoheaven.  Isaiah7:14 “Therefore theLord Himself should shallgive you a sign;Behold,a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son,and shall call his nameImmanuel”  Philippians2:8“And be found in human form,Hehumbled Himself by becoming obedientto thepoint of death, even death on the cross”
  • 4. 4  Mark 16:6 “Don’tbe alarmed”he said.“You are looking forJesusof Nazarene, who was crucified. He hasrisen! He is nothere. See theplace where they laid him” 3. We believe thatGodhas calledusto fulfill the greatcommissionthatHe gave us inthe Bible,to share His Gospel tothe endsof the earthand withall people, andtoshare the Light of Christto othersinthisworld.  “Then Jesuscameto themand said, “All authority in heaven and on earth hasbeen given to me. Therefore go and makedisciples of all nations, baptizing themin the nameof the Fatherand of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching themto obey everything Ihave commanded you.And surely Iamwith you always,to thevery end of the age.” 4. We believe thatGodcan use anyone inany contexttobe a lightforChristand byeitherwords or actions, share the love of Christto others, nomatter how youngor old  Psalm92:12-14 “The righteouswill flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon;planted in the houseof the LORD, they will flourish in the courtsof ourGod. They will still bearfruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green”  I Timothy4:12 “Let no onedespise you foryouryouth, butsetthe believers an example in speech,in conduct,in love,in faith,in purity” Philosophical Basis for Rugby For Christ’s Ministries We believe thatoutBiblical anddoctrinal beliefscomesthe philosophyonwhichwe use tohelpusto operate ourministrytothe standard that God callsusto uphold. We believethatourphilosophyneeds to be basedinScripture and that we allow the Holy Spirittoinfluenceandwork. 1. One way thatwe believe thatGodhas calledusto doas non-profitorganizationistoshare the lightof Christand spreadand preachthe Gospel to all people andnations, whereveritbe throughour wordsor actions
  • 5. 5  Psalm96:3 “Declare his glory among thenations, hismarvelousworksamong allthe peoples!” 2. A thirdway we believe thatwe are calledtocome alongside the people thatGodputs inour path, especiallyyouthwhoare undersomuchnegative influence, andwalkalongwiththemin life, helpingthemtogrowor come to know relationshipwithChrist.  Galatians6:2 “Bear oneanother’sburdens, and so fulfillthe law of Christ” 4. Finally,we believe thatitisimportantthatinall thingswe accept instructionandcontinue to learnand growwithour relationshipwithGod,eventhroughtimesof correctionand instruction.  II Timothy3:16-17 “All Scriptureis breathed outby God and profitableforteaching, for reproof, forcorrection, and fortraining in righteousness, thattheman of God may be competent, equipped forevery good work” Methodological Basis for Rugby For Christ Ministries We at KingdomRugbybelief thatourDoctrinal/Biblical &Philosophical basisdeterminesthe methods that we use to run our sportsministryprogram.Below are the waysthat we as a ministrybelievethat we can accomplishwhatGod has calledusto do.
  • 6. 6 1. Competitive Travel Team:We believethatone waywe can accomplishwhatGod has calledus to do isby competition. We believe thatChristianscanuse competitionto furtherthe Kingdom of God andspreadHis name.We have competitive travelteams(forages13-18) that travel throughoutthe yearand playotherteamsinthe league.Playersare expectednotjustto compete, buthelporganize andrunoutreacheventsandto share the Gospel 2. SummerCamps:Throughoutthe summermonths,we’ll haveChristianrugbyplayers/coaches come from across the UnitedStatesandfrom othercountriesaswell andwill travel throughout the US andput on summercampsfor kidsandteenagersandteachRugby as well aspresentthe Gospel andmake sure that there are churchesinplace to disciple andteachthe kidsonce the camp isover 3. Clinics:Throughoutthe local school systeminBloomingtonandsurroundingareas,RFChosts clinicsforpeople inthe local areato come out and improve theirskills, orlearnhow to play rugbyfor the firsttime. 4. Communityoutreachevents:We believe thatitisgoodto be out inthe communityandmaking a difference forChristisimportantandthatwe shouldnotneglectthe people Godhasputin proximitytous. We believe thathavingeventssuchastournamentsordinnersare justa couple of the waysthat we can share the love of Christandbuildrelationshipswithpeople. 5. Internships:We believe stronglyinthe factthat God israisingup a generationof believersthat willingtoserve andfollow GodwhereverHe leads, sowe offeracouple of 1-year internshipsfor college age orrecentlygraduatedstudentswhoare feelingacall to sports ministryandwholove the game of Rugby.Theywill be workingwithinall the differentareasof our ministryaswell as beingdiscipleandmentoredthroughoutthe internship.
  • 7. 7 Mission Statement The missionof KingdomRugbyistoo“To share the love andlife changingGospel messageofJesus Christthrough the sport ofRugby” We believe thatwe are calledbyGod to use the sport of Rugbyas we the avenue tospreadthe message thatHe givesusinthe Great Commission. We asa ministrybelievethatRugbycan be used innumerouswaysto showotherslove of Christandto spreadHis message of salvation, wherever that be throughwordsor actions. Vision Statement It isour visionatKIngdomthat we see “Communitiesandlivesimpactedfor Godandrelationships formed andstrengthened throughthe variousavenuesthat Rugby provides” We believe thatusingthe sportof Rugby,God can allow usto make a difference forHim.Wherever that be throughcompetitive competition, camps, clinicsinschoolsandthe general community where people canlearnaboutrugbyandmore importantly, learnaboutChristJesus Core Values Life reflectsFaith:One of ourcore valuesisthatour staff and volunteers, alongwithyouthe youth whoare a part of our ministryisthattheirlivesreflectthe faiththattheyhave, thatno matterwhat happensonthe fieldoroff it,that the heart and lightof Christ will be evidenttoall those whoare present. Excellence inRugby:We are calledbyChristto doour bestand we believethatwe needtostrive to do that whenteachingandplayingRugby, todoeverythingwithexcellence.
  • 8. 8 CommunityFocused:We are nothere for the communitytoserve us,butfor us to serve andpartner withthe communitiesthatwe are inand helpthemreachtheirfull potential. We wanttoallowGod to use us to helpmake positiveandlastingchange withinthe communitiesthatwe are servingin. Partnership:We understandthatGodhas givenusspecifictalentsandabilitiestoshare Hismessage, but He has givenmanyothersdifferentgiftstouse forthe same purpose.Sowe believethatitis importantthatwhenwe can, we partnerwithchurchesand organizationssothatthe Gospel of Christmay be fullyspreadandthatwe as believerscanhave unityinChrist. Growth:We want to challenge andsee people grow intheirrelationshipwithChristorcome to knowthe salvationthatcan onlybe foundinChrist,or at leastplanta seedinsomeone, sothatin the future God can use anotherto helpthe seedgrow andmature and have anotherpersoncome to Christ.

  • 28. 28 Fundraising Letter DearFriends, As you all know, I love the sport of rugby and have always wanted to use that love for the glory of God. Well, I have great news!! I had the opportunity to apply and interview for a coaching position at Kingdom Rugby and have just received word that I have been offered the full-time coaching position with them coaching one of the competitive travel teams. It is amazing how God has been able to use the passion I have for the sport of rugby and is allowing me to use to further the Kingdom of God!! He has confirmed that this is His will for my life currently through scripture, counsel from others, and prayer. Kingdom Rugby is based out of Bloomington, Indiana and was founded in 2007. They focus on sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the sport of Rugby so that people can come to know Jesus Christ as their own personal savior, and begin a relationship with Him. They also want to see communities impacted positively and transformed, which can only happen through the power of Jesus Christ. Kingdom Rugby has several different strategieswhen it comes to sharing the Gospel, but the avenue that I have been chosen to do will be through coaching. As a coach of Kingdom Rugby I will have the opportunity and privilege to teach and help deepen the relationship with Christ that the future players I will coach have. Other aspects of this job will include:  Help organize games and tournaments for the team  Recruit and scout players  Develop and help organize/lead devotionals for the team  Disciple and mentor players While I am very excited for this opportunity and that I have been offered this job, I do not want to embark on this adventure alone. I would love if you guys would consider partnering with me. Most importantly, I would love for you all to become part of my prayer team, and if you feel called, part of my financial team as well. Even though this is a paid position, I will still need to raise about $5000 a year to cover some of the costs that I and the other coaches will have to take on, by becoming coaches of traveling teams. Please not the response card and the endorsed envelope. If you have any questions, please contact me. I would love to talk and meet with you personally and answer and explain more about Kingdom Rugby and its mission that I have the privilege to now be a part of. You can also contact me at 1-765-777-6565 or by email at coachissac@kingdomrugby.com May God bless and keep you all! -Isaac P.S.All tax deductible checksshouldbe made payable toKingdomRugbyandwill be forwardedtous.

Thisis a questionthathasbeendebatedbackandforth fora longtime withinChristianitywhen it comesto approachingsportsministry. The opinionsonthistopicare quite variedandeachsports ministryhasa differenttake onwhatis rightand whatis not. An argumentforwhycompetitionisgoodwithinthe contextof sportsministryisthatthere needstobe winnersandlosers, because kidstodayneedtolearnhow tofail andsometimesare greatestlearningandgrowthcan come throughreproof andcorrection.Anotherpointthatisgivenon thisside of the argumentisthat competitiondrivesexcellence, anditwill helpkidsdevelopexcellence not onlyinsport, but inspiritual aspectsaswell. An argumentagainstcompetitionwithinthe contextof sportsministryisthatcompetitionisnot the pointof the sportsministry.Itismore importantto focuson the ministryaspectof things, andjust use sport as a meansto accomplishthatgoal. Some people are alsoconcernedthatcompetitionbrings out the worstin people, notthe bestanditwouldbe bettertojustplaythe sportwitha focus on improvementanddevelopingthe spiritualside of the people whocome tothe sportsministry. My ownviewpointonthisissue isthatcompetitionisgoodforthe sportsministrycontext, thoughI do understandthe otherside of the argument.Ibelieve thatcompetitioncanbe reallygoodfor us whenwe dosportsministry, andI have heardstoriespersonallyfromothersinthe sportsministry field, thatreasontheywere able towitnessandshare the Gospel withotherswasdue tothe fact they were competitive andcouldplayandbeatotherteams. How wouldyouattempttopersuade someone inyourchurchof the value of sports ministry?
  • 30. 30 I wouldattempttopersuade themby pointingoutthatsportsis one of the universal languages of the world(otherbeingmusic) andbecause of this, sportscanhave an huge impacton othersfor Christ, because itwill attractpeople whomaynotnecessarilybe opentothe Gospel throughmore traditional methodsof ministry. I wouldsaythat sportsgive a great opportunityforrelational witnessingandthatforsome people;youneedtogetalongside of themandbuildrelationshipswiththem.Theyneedtosee thatyou genuinelycare andwant toinvestintheirlives, before theywill become opentohearingaboutthe Gospel.Sportsandrecreational ministryare greattoolstouse to do that. A thirdreasonisthat sportsand recreationministryhave value isthatitallowschurchesto appeal toall people regardlessof age andbackground. These ministriescanbe adaptedforany age and for space, whichallowsthe churchto impactpeople across the boardand not justone or twodifferent groupsof people. • 44. 44 Isaac Gray 4 November 2014 Professor Burson Models of Sports Ministries Guest Reflection Paper #6 Background When Greg Linville started in ministry, using sports to do ministry was a foreign concept. He started with the YMCA and learned that ministry seemed most effective when he “had a ball in one hand and a Bible in the other”. He has coached at six different high schools in Ohio and at Malone University during the 1980’s and Geneva College. He has worked in both church and para- ministry settings. Abstract Summary One of Greg Linville’s main points is that sports ministry is seeing declines across the board and the reasons for this. One reason he gave was that sports ministry “has not filled the expectations and promises”, due in part to decline of Christianity in the United States. Another reason he gave was that the local church as a whole hasn’t grown through the avenue of sports and recreation ministry. Healso focused on three main issues during his talk. The first one was, is Competition Theologically Sound? He talked about if it is theologically sound, then sports arebiblical. Though, he said Christians have thought competition is evil and have not done it, so now at a crossroads about how deal with the issue of competition. The second main issue was that of “Sunday Sports” and what are the issues and addressing and answering the questions and agreements that surround this issue and how one’s opinion of this is dependent on how they view things like the Sabbath, the Lord’s day, Outreach, and the view of church. The third main issue he talked about in the realm of sports ministry was that of “gender issues.” He talked about when it comes to this issue, our biblical foundation is will influence what we decide to do. He
  • 45. 45 did say that we need to love and show that the person has value, and “love them into a place where they can hear and believe God’s truth”. He also said on a practical level, that we need to make recreational transgender friendly, and not build things specifically for men and women. He also briefly discussed the three levels of structure for sports and recreation ministry, which starts with the “why” (Theology), the “When, Where & to Whom” (Philosophy), and the “what” (methodology). Speaker Experiences Greg first told a story during his background about a church that was doing a good job with its methodology, but was also helping develop believers to full spiritual maturity and how God blessed that ministry and how the church grew from about 200 people to 2500 people. He also told the story of Eric Liddell, an athlete who did not raceon Sundays, and because of that, there was a movie called “Chariots of Fire” made about him and since the movie is considered a classic, he now has a greater witness. Personal Reflections and Questions I thought that Greg Linville did a good job talking about how we need to have a Biblical and foundation and how that is what influences everything else that we do within sports in recreation ministry. Though it did seem he focused a lot on the negatives of sports ministry, but did not seem (to me anyway) give a ton of practicaladvice about how to change it. Actions One practical takeawayis that I can start researching what is my biblical basis for wanting to do sports ministry, because that will influence what I do. Another practical step is start searching into internships and conferences and start building a network of people and organizations.
