OMV Resourcefulness
OMV in Pakistan has initiated its Community Development Program in 2003 with the aim to
support integrated and sustainable initiatives, contributing to the wellbeing of the communities
around OMV’s operating sites located in four different Districts of Sindh Province (Taluka Nara of
District Khairpur, Taluka Salehpat of District Sukkur, Taluka Daharki of District Ghotki and Taluka
Kamber of District Kamber Shahdadkot).
Based on the findings of the baseline and needs assessment studies carried out in our project
areas, the program mainly covers the following sectors:
 Women’s Empowerment Program (WEP)
 Education
 Health
 Water Supply and Management
 Agricultural Development
 Local Crafts Promotion
 Energy
Women’s Empowerment Program
The Women’s Empowerment Program aims to empower women in the communities around
operational sites of OMV Pakistan and within OMV Pakistan by providing them access to quality
education and equal economic opportunities.
Educational opportunities for girls are generated including the
first secondary school facility for 180 girls and 180 boys as
well as scholarships for higher secondary school to eight girls
and engineering university education to five girls for creating
women role models in the communities.
Microfinance services and business development
/management training, targeting a total of 2,000 women to become entrepreneurs and raise their
family income is another milestone being achieved through this program.
A two year target was set in OMV Pakistan to increase the number of women in professional and
technical positions from 12 to 20% and include at least two women in its management team.
Appointment of women engineers for the first time at field locations of OMV Pakistan is another
milestone achieved through this program.

Sustainable Education by The Citizen Foundation and Sustainable Microfinance and Business
Development model by Kashf Foundation are not dependent on OMV after its establishment and
will continue providing its services in the communities without OMV’s support.
Education
At OMV Pakistan, we believe that education is the key to the
development and uplift of communities in remote areas. With this view,
we have been implementing our Education Project in OMV concession
areas in Sindh, the slogan of our Project being ‘Rising through Education’!
The Project’s major focus is on strengthening primary education to help
nurture young and receptive minds in a conducive environment. To
achieve this, OMV Pakistan has been supporting 77 primary schools with
the cooperation of the local populace and the Education Departments of
the District Governments for the last ten years. In addition to
infrastructure development, the Project aims to ensure that students receive quality education.
Teacher training has been identified as a critical element of the initiative, as it is difficult to attract
qualified teachers from towns who find the rough terrain of the desert and the absence of basic
infrastructure and amenities a disincentive to work. Therefore, a ‘Training Resource Centre’ has
been established to improve the teaching skills of local teachers with basic qualifications through
regular trainings. Students of remote desert areas where establishment of high school is almost
impossible are provided facilitation and financial support for high school education in a model high
school with boarding facility.
The Middle Education Project, another component of our Education Project, is geared towards
reducing school dropout rate after the completion of primary education. To accomplish this, OMV
Pakistan is providing need-based support to middle schools such as school infrastructure
improvement and the provision of technical facilities required at the high school level.
OMV has also established two model high schools, The Citizens
Foundation (TCF) and Pakistan Rangers Public School (PRPS) .These
schools are managed by independent orgainsations and are located in
the nearest urban towns to the village primary schools. The purpose
behind establishing and providing financial assistance to these schools is
that they provide an opportunity to the students of primary schools to complete their high school
education.
Literacy classes for adults were also initiated with the technical support of National Commission
for Human Development. The objective was to provide basic literacy and numeric skills among
adult men and women.
3/5
OMV has also recently started a project by the name of ‘Technical and Vocational Training to the
local youth’. The idea behind this project is to provide the local youth residing around OMV’s
operational sites with an opportunity of getting technical education and widening career options.
The candidates selected are given a full scholarship.
With the Education Project, OMV Pakistan is progressively contributing towards human capital
development and the intelligent design of the Project continually adds new need-based
components to it, supporting communities that look forward to advancement through
enlightenment.
Health
To help provide accessible primary health services to the villagers, 26
Village Health Centres were established in different village and the health
workers are provided regular training with OMV Pakistan’s support and
refresher courses are also organized to keep them updated regarding
current knowledge.
A Mother and Child Health (MCH) Centre was established by OMV
Pakistan in collaboration with the District Government Sukkur and Marie
Stopes Society in one of its concession areas. The project was
successfully handed over to the District Government Sukkur and is being
run by a local health organization.
Medical camps are arranged on an ongoing basis and OMV Pakistan also supports the
government in its polio eradication campaigns.
A dispensary was established in Miano to deal with emergency and first
aid cases and was connected with the MCH Centre at Salehpat through
an ambulance service.
A Hepatitis B vaccination project was executed with the financial
support of Austrian Development Agency (ADA) and OMV-AG Vienna. The project was executed
with the technical cooperation of the District Governments of Sukkur and Khairpur. More than
30,000 men, women and children received the complete dose of the hepatitis b vaccine. The
project also received a TRIGOS award in Austria. TRIGOS is a platform founded by business
organizations and NGOS to further promote CSR and sustainability.
4/5
Considering the immediate need of the local community, OMV Pakistan established a Family
Medical Centre in the town of Chundko, Taluka Nara, District Khairpur. The Centre is now run by
PPHI in consultation with District Government Khairpur.
Water Supply and Management
In Miano, water resources are scarce and insufficient to meet the
villagers’ needs. As an immediate solution to the problem and to alleviate
the difficulties of villagers, we installed 32 hand pumps where
groundwater was sweet and provided water tanks where the groundwater
is brackish. Water is supplied to these tanks by water browsers on a daily
basis as a short term solution and now two other initiatives are implemented as a sustainable
water supply option for the community.
Agricultural Development
The majority of people in Sawan depend on agriculture for their income
whereas livestock rearing is the major means of livelihood for the people
of Miano. Agricultural development can contribute in raising a local
family’s income. Modern farming techniques were introduced by setting
up demonstration farms. These farms were developed for local farmers to
see, understand and emulate these modern farming techniques.
Since most of the population of OMV Pakistan’s concession areas is dependent on livestock for
their livelihood, we developed a project for the provision of trainings in disease control and
livestock management of goats, sheep, cows, poultry, etc.; for both men and women of our
concession areas. The objective of the trainings was to improve people’s livelihood and reduce
poverty by increasing the productivity of the livestock owned by poor people. Regular medical
camps are also arranged with the help of district livestock department. A veterinary dispensary
was laos established and handed over to the district livestock department for its regular
operations.
5/5
Local Crafts Promotion
OMV Pakistan is helping the local people increase their income levels by
promoting local crafts. Approximately 53 men and women were facilitated
to ensure that all the produced items are compatible with the present
market. Different exhibitions were held at the national and international
level to display their craft and all proceeds from the exhibitions go to the
artisans of OMV Pakistan’s concession areas in Sindh. This not only helps in preserving the
indigenous skills of the local people but also in generating income for the improvement of their
lives. Local women were also provided training in cutting and sewing of clothes. This program
not only helped ladies to learn the skill and save some of their household income but also
provided an opportunity for some ladies to become professional tailors.
Energy
Access to basic, clean energy services is essential for sustainable
development and poverty eradication, and provides major benefits in the
areas of health, literacy and equity. As a pilot project OMV Pakistan has
provided electricity connection to 121 households.
All these projects have been designed and implemented with the
consultation and active participation of the local communities and the District Governments. OMV
Pakistan wants to contribute to the development of its concession areas by enhancing the local
institutional capacity and to leave behind sustainable footprints.
