2. EMS Pre-Registration Tips
These tips will help your organization implement an Environmental Management
System (EMS) before it goes for ISO 14001 registration:
• Conduct an environmental compliance audit (a third-party audit is
recommended). This will aid in identifying legal and other requirements, and
identifying any actual or potential compliance issues which would require
prompt attention and/or corrective action.
• Consider integration of the EMS with other existing management systems…
don’t re-invent the wheel if it is not necessary.
• Obtain a copy of ISO 14004:2004; it provides excellent guidance for ISO
14001 implementation. Also obtain ISO 19011:2002, as it provides
guidance on auditing an EMS.
• Consider having a pre-assessment by your registrar. It can serve as a value-
added gap analysis prior to certification.
• Don’t over-document!
o The idea is to create an effective and efficient EMS, and not a
complex documented system.
o Not all procedures need to be documented. Concentrate on those
specifically required/necessary for the effective implementation of the
EMS. Review ISO 14001:2004 carefully for specific documentation
requirements.
o Make sure procedures reflect actual practices.
• Objectives and Targets:
o For objectives, targets and programs, prioritize and concentrate on
the significant aspects while taking into consideration available
resources.
o Implement programs using measurable performance indicators. The
idea is to enable objective evaluation of environmental performance.

3. EMS Pre-Registration Tips
• Training:
o Identify training needs and maintain related records. Don’t forget
about “persons working for or on its behalf” (temps, suppliers,
contractors) for communication and competency requirements.
o Many legal requirements, permits, contingency plans, etc. specify
training needs. Review such documents and incorporate them into
the EMS.
• An effective EMS is the result of a group effort, not a one-person show.
o Provide training and resources to facilitate planning and
implementation of the EMS as a group, not just the designated
environmental representative.
o Get the buy-in and involvement of all employees.
