We started with a simple idea
How could we work more efficiently?
• Intel's 91,500 employees work at
164 sites in 62 countries. Project teams
are often spread across the world.
– Two thirds of Intel teams are virtual
– 1/5 of Intel employees have remote managers
• We use powerful collaboration tools to
stay connected and help our employees
be productive when working with
geographically diverse teams.
But the fact remains, we still have a lot of meetings!

The challenge that is everyone’s challenge
• We conducted a simple and fun study intended
to improve productivity in meetings.
• We asked participants to do 2 simple things:
– Could they try to reduce selected meetings by
30 minutes by applying the effective meeting
practices they already knew? This would apply
to both meetings they schedule themselves and
meetings they attend.
– Could they tell us about their experience via
a web survey?
Everyone benefits from more effective meetings.
The answer was a resounding “YES”!

Getting people involved was easy
• Our program required no training and there
was no bureaucracy or cost.
• Communication was organic – we used
word-of-mouth and internal blogs. One internal
blog received over 12,000 views and many
comments and ideas.
• Our participants were entered into random
drawings for gift cards and hourglasses.
• We had people from all job functions across the
company participating.
We used a variety of ways to keep it simple and fun.

The Results were Overwhelmingly Positive
Based on survey respondents, we achieved:
Feedback was consistently positive from our participants.
Increased Efficiency
We project a return of
27,000 hours of employee
work time.
Increased Velocity
We freed up over 4,500
30-minute meeting
slots per year.
