Unemployability is a bigger problem in India than unemployment, as over 50 lakh students graduate each year but very few possess the necessary skills to be employed. Around 50% of Indian graduates lack basic employability skills. While India's gross enrollment ratio for higher education is rising, the quality of education and development of employability skills is lacking. This is exacerbated by a shortage of good institutions, lack of flexibility in recognizing prior learning, and weak industry linkages in the education system.
