Time to Market
CASE STUDY
Proteus Digital Health
• Integrating the intake of medicine with ingestible sensors,
wearable devices, mobile and data analytics.
• Providing an unprecedented view into personal health
choices and physiologic response, allowing patients to better
manage their health and collaborate with caregivers and
clinicians.
• Received CE mark in Europe and FDA clearance in the U.S
postmarket. Clinical trials are underway.
Responding to three macro trends in health today:
1. There are more people with mobile phones than with access
to clean, running water today.
2. Chronic diseases like diabetes, often lifestyle-related, are
the world’s biggest healthcare problem and existing health
systems can’t cope.
3. The increased use of wearable devices and sensors to
manage health.
Challenges:
• Regulatory compliance
required to bring new
healthcare products to market
• Cost and time to market
impact at every phase of the
product lifecycle
• Geo and country-specific
requirements
• BLE connectivity across
multiple devices
Solution:
• Development effort to
enable secure, continuous
communication via BLE
between Proteus Patch and
mobile device and backend
systems
• Combination of manual and
automated testing across
multiple sensors, layers,
mobile and wearable devices
• Selenium for web automation
Results:
• Addressed several difficult
development challenges to
enhance product quality and
accelerate time to market
• Automated over 65% of testing
requirements
• Reduced app testing time
by 40%

2. OVERVIEW
Proteus is pioneering a new category of products, services and data systems based on
integrating the intake of medicine with ingestible sensors, wearable devices and data
analytics. The Proteus service offering, integrates medicines that treat chronic conditions
with mobile technologies to make healthcare more accessible, manageable and affordable.
CHALLENGES
The Proteus service offering includes a unique combination of technologies and concepts
– therapeutic dosage/delivery and patient compliance monitoring on one end; mobile
sensors, wearable devices, networks and data analytics on the other.
The company’s core competence was on the front end with medicine delivery and patient
care. It needed a technology partner equally qualified to support it on the backend – with
expertise in mobile technologies, wearables and the fast-growing area known as the
“Internet of Things.” A partner that:
• understood the requirements of a startup company and could respond to its need for
speed and flexibility.
• had the expertise to guide its development and test/QA efforts on the mobile
technology side of its solution across multiple geographies, markets and platforms.
Proteus was looking to accelerate its development cycle while ensuring an accurate, high
quality user experience regardless of the mobile device or operating system.
SOLUTION
Today, InfoStretch’s engagement at Proteus touches almost every aspect of how the
offering works.
Development
InfoStretch started working with Proteus to enable its mobile application to communicate
continuously via BLE with the Proteus Patch worn by the patient. The communication
is very secure and uses Proteus’ proprietary protocol to transmit data to the mobile
application. The mobile app then crunches the data using complex algorithms and
generates important metrics such as medicine taken, number of steps, body angle and vital
signs. After it processes these inputs, the application uploads the data to a backend server
for further analytical analysis. Precision is key given the medical nature of the data.
InfoStretch also supported Proteus on several other development projects including the
middleware for the core Proteus application – supporting both Android and iOS – as well as
the Web front end portal for the standard patient application. This involved:
• Setting up an onshore-offshore hybrid team that quickly came up to speed on
Proteus’ mobile architecture.
• Working closely with the Proteus engineering team in agile mode to build
enhancements, features and solve complex BLE-related connectivity challenges.
• Incorporating defined processes and systems to ensure quality and re-use.
• Meeting regulatory standards required with medical data.
Proteus Digital Health Accelerates Time to Market
Proteus’ vision is to
integrate medicines that
treat chronic conditions with
mobile technology – via
its ingestible sensors and
wearable patches – to make
healthcare more accessible,
manageable and innovative.

project with a balanced
on shore/off shore model
accelerating cycle time and
reducing costs for Proteus.

Software Verification and Validation
InfoStretch created an end to end process to test and QA the entire service offering across
the entire application lifecycle. This included:
• Manual testing of the Proteus mobile app running on the patient’s cell phone across
multiple devices and operating systems.
• Automated testing and QA of the connection of the front end, back end and
middleware for Proteus’ PHAROS, the proprietary app that connects the mobile app
to medical applications in the hospital as well as health records portal.
• QA testing of the system’s firmware – the semiconductor and communication
between the ingestible sensors, the wearable patches applied to patients to
communicate with the sensor, the mobile app on the cell phone and Proteus’
backend systems.
• Simulation of real-life patient reactions to the ingestible, wearable patch and related
external factors.
Both projects required a very structured approach to application testing and script
development. InfoStretch also set up a dedicated testing lab to meet stringent FDA protocol
requirements.
Performance and Scalability Testing
The engagement also included performance testing on the backend – checking capacity
performance and scalability of the Proteus backend platform.
Systems Integration & Device Expansion
One of the essential elements of the Proteus offering was its ability to have all the different
pieces working together as one. InfoStretch was engaged here to simulate this including
setting up a test center to replicate how the systems would operate and communicate
in real life. InfoStretch also worked with Proteus to ensure the offering would work from
one device, carrier and operating system to the next. This involved simultaneous testing
on various mobile and wearable devices and providing recommendations to the Proteus
development team for execution.
Site Reliability Monitoring
InfoStretch was also engaged to monitor the Proteus servers in its Redwood City data
center which hosts the Proteus application. InfoStretch provides remote system monitoring,
regular performance reports, automatic alarms, alerts and real-time capacity sizing.
RESULTS
The InfoStretch team has been able to respond to every challenge and guide Proteus’
development and testing efforts to help enhance product quality and accelerate time to
market. Specific highlights include:
• Solved several difficult BLE connectivity challenges integral to the operation of the
Digital Health Feedback System.
• Automated over 65% of testing requirements using Selenium Framework.
• Reduced app testing time by 40%.
• Enabling simultaneous testing on various mobile and wearable devices.
• Extending existing Proteus frameworks and tools to include more advanced
functionalities.
