2. Road Safety is Integral to IndII Objectives 1. Build a more supportive regulatory and policy environment for infrastructure investments; and 2. Enhance the economic and social impact of priorityinfrastructure projects.
16. Unsafe work practices No safety vests Few warning signs No protective barriers Road work safety in Indonesia needs improvement – two workshops were held to make contractors aware of the need to make work sites safer for workers and road users
24. Topics covered to date are Road Safety Engineering for Indonesia, Roadside Hazard Management, and Road Safety at Road Work Sites.

26. Lessons Learnt in IndII Phase 1 The RSEU has an important role in DGH. It must grow. Many engineers “blame the road user”. We are working to alter attitudes. Engineering graduates are unaware that RSE can be a career. Balai’s need RSE help – RSE units must be developed in each one. More technical knowledge (manuals and DVD’s) is urgently needed. Engineers need to witness “successes” – the demonstration projects can do that. Road safety at road works is a “hot topic” – improvements can be achieved at low cost and will be very visible to all. Strong efforts will be made in this area. Crash data is inadequate. Interaction with Police is vital for long term sustainability of blackspot programs. Everything takes time! RSE is still a “baby” The lessons learnt will allow us to address some of the basic challenges in road safety engineering in Indonesia.
