Admin Tips Power Hour
Chris Miller
@IdoNotes on everything, yes everything
Speaker
• Chris Miller
▪ @IdoNotes on everything
▪ IBM Champion 2011-2016
▪ <insert blah blah blah here>
▪ See my blog, podcast and webcasts for more
This is where we give thanks
Paul Mooney Gabriella Davis
Rules of Engagement
• You will fill out your session evals
• Now is fine, just mark awesome
• Ask questions as we go along, doubtful we have time later
• At no point during this session will any room around us be louder
than us
• If they clap, we clap louder
• If they cheer, we cheer louder
Agenda
• Talk fast
• Check time
• Talk faster
• Ignore timekeeper in back
• Finish session when we are ready
• These tips are in no real order or grouping
#1
• The goal of everything we do as admins is to start simple
▪ Occam's razor really works
• Among competing hypotheses, the one with the fewest assumptions
should be selected
#2
• Domino only has two rules it follows
• Remember the two rules and you can solve anything
• Rule #1
• What you let it do (defaults)
• Rule #2
• What you tell it to do (change or set configs)
• It does not wake up in the morning to mess with you
#3
• Mail File Digest - summary report for mailfiles and mail-in
databases from OpenNTF
▪ A simple server program that gives you summary or detailed mail
file information
▪ http://idonot.es/mailfiledigesttool
#4
• Use Show Configuration console commands for quick
verifications of configurations
• Show config domain - shows domain config
• Show config ???? - will give you 4 character configs
• Show config mail* - give anything starting with mail
• Show Config * - of course gives you all
#5
• Tell HTTP dump config
• A text file of what the server says it actual HTTP settings are
• Used to verify that the server is behaving how you think
#6
• Remove replication triangulation on databases that replicate
across tens of servers
• Yes this is a thing
• Triangulation stores replication events with servers it has not
even replicated with
• Available in Domino 8.0.1 and higher
• NSF_REPLHIST_NO_TRI=1

REPL_NO_WS_TRI_HIST=1

REPL_NO_REMOTE_TRI_HIST=1
#7
• Various Replication diagnostic tools are available such as the

Log_Replication notes.ini parameter for replication logging
▪ The log file and log_replication is pretty useless
▪ What if we want to know what exactly happens during replication?
• Set Log_Replication=3 to get information about each replicated note:
#7 - continued
• Can we go even higher in Log_Replication?
▪ Why not go to 4
• This will show detailed logging information about each replicated field
– Value 3 only showed us the document level
▪ Or how about 5
• This will give you only summary information on replication
events
#8
• Why are there so many Compact task flags yet we still feel so
limited?
• There are currently how many flags and switches available?
• This might be a trick question
• The answer is at least 38 flags and switches
• http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21084388
• Want even more?
• Debug_Enable_Compact_8_5=1
• This adds 5 more capabilities and is over 5 years old
#8 - continued
• -W nn Only Compact those databases which were NOT
compacted successfully in the last nn days
• -w Only Compact system databases (Log.nsf, Names.nsf)
• -X nnLimit the time for the compact of a single database to nn
Minutes (only works with the "in-place" compact)
• -x nn Limit the total time for Compact to nn Minutes
• -# nn Start multiple (nn) compact tasks simultaneously
#9
• Force ini configuration changes both directions
• If you update a notes.ini you can push it back to the server
configuration document
• Enable_Srvcfg_NAB_Update=1
• You can also push a change manually
• Set config <some update>=XX update
#10
• Curious why all replicas are not created accelerated?
• IBM has placed numerous restrictions on Accelerated Create
Replica capability in Domino
• Servers must be clustered (why?)
• Source is FTI enabled and destination is not (why?)
• Override many of these restrictions
• Adminp_Accelerated_Replica_Overrides=
• Values are 1, 4 and 5
#11
