Environmental Studies / Pollution
Surveys and Studies
To assess the degree of environmental
degradation and to set a baseline for future
work. This type of study helps in suggesting
future strategy to comply with the
regulatory requirements and to form a basis
for any management system.
Hazard Response Planning and
Health Risk Assessments
Qualitative Health Risk Assessment
(HRA) are conducted to establish health
risks factors and ranking method will
priorities the products, which present a
high risk during manufacture or
potential health risk during various
phases of manufacturing. High-risk
homogenous exposure groups are
normally identified and samplings of
products are conducted to assess if they
present a high risk.

Evaluation of regulatory and
legislative constraints pertaining to
Environmental Legislation and Other
Requirements.
To maintain legal and other compliance,
the organization must identify and
understand and address the regulatory
and other requirements applicable to
environmental aspects and services
related to Environment. To keep track of
legal requirements, EMC establishes and
maintains a list of all laws and regulations
relevant to the environmental aspects and
impacts of its activities. We have a highly
qualified and experienced Environmental
Lawyer as our associate who can provide
counseling on legal issues, related to
Environment for instance implications of
regulatory compliances and management
of other legal matters.
Guidance on Cleaner Technologies &
Treatment Facilities (Area of
Expertise)
It is the need of the day to switch to
newer and cleaner technology, we at
EMC always stress on the cleaner
technologies which are green in nature
and helps in creating less pollution and
are environmental friendly.
Cleaner technology includes recycling,
renewable energy (wind power, solar
power, biomass, hydropower,
biofuels),information technology, green
transportation, electric motors, green
chemistry, lighting, Grey water, and
many other appliances that are now
more energy efficient. It is a means to
create electricity and fuels, with a
smaller environmental footprint and
minimize pollution. To make green
buildings, transport and infrastructure
both more energy efficient and
environmentally benign. Environmental
finance is a method by which new
clean technology projects that has
proven that they are "additional" or
"beyond business as usual" can obtain
financing through the generation of
carbon credits. A project that is
developed with concern for climate
change mitigation (such as a Kyoto
Clean Development Mechanism
project) is also known as a carbon
project.
While there is no standard definition of
"clean technology," it has been
described by Clean Edge, a clean
technology research firm, as "a diverse
range of products, services, and
processes that harness renewable
materials and energy sources,
dramatically reduce the use of natural
resources, and cut or eliminate
emissions and wastes." It notes that
"Clean technologies are competitive
with, if not superior to, their
conventional counterparts. Many also
offer significant additional benefits,
notably their ability to improve the

lives of those in both developed and
developing countries.
Virtually all textile and chemical
industries have an impact on the
environment or are impacted by
environmental and related regulation.
The extent of that impact and how
clients navigate regulatory framework
and minimize the risk is a matter of
degree. We have suggested many
textile and chemical industries to
switch to cleaner technologies and
provided them sufficient knowledge
and information database to
implement these technologies
successfully.
Environmental and Industrial
Hygiene, Monitoring & Control
We develop a plan for services together
with the client. We listen carefully to our
clients concerns, inform them about
regulatory requirements and our past
experiences with those issues. We have
developed exposure monitoring
strategies, such as chemical air sampling
or noise Monitoring. Our Company also
works with our client to develop effective,
yet workable, exposure control strategies,
including training of workers. Finally we
will report our findings in a professional,
comprehensive, yet understandable
fashion. We will support our clients to
help resolve any regulatory or mitigation
issues related to:
• Industrial Air Emissions and Effluent
Testing
• Indoor Air Quality
• Noise Monitoring and Mapping
illumination Survey
• Air Quality Measurement at work
place to determine occupational
exposure to Toxic substances
• Emissions and Acoustic Pollution
Abatement in Industries.
Environmental, Health & Safety
Audits
To remain competitive in business an
organization needs to be certified by
independent ISO auditors. The scope of
EHS auditing is expanding. In this context
we carry out Internal and Follow up
OUR SERVICES
COMPANYPrOFILE
EMC PAKISTAN PvT. LTd. 9
Audits before the final certification.
Auditing is no longer simply completing a
checklist to determine regulatory
compliance. To provide information on
the effectiveness of management
systems, opportunities for cost reduction
and continuous improvement
accomplishments auditing programs are
mandatory today. We have Qualified
EARA approved Lead Auditors for EMS
ISO 14001; we also conduct other
Environmental, Health & Safety Audits.
Our EHS auditing includes:
• Compliance Audit
• Site Impact Audit
• EHS Audits (e.g. waste,energy audits)
• Safety Audits
• Health and Safety Auditing and
Program Development
• Environmental Audits
• Due Diligence Regulatory
Compliance Auditing
• Third Party Assessment of Auditing
Programs
• Reporting and Auditing Information
• Management Training
Environmental Site Assessments
Environmental Site Assessment
Phase - I (ASTM E-1527)
The phase I of ESA is based on ASTM E-
1527 and helps in determining potential
environmental liabilities to establish the
basis for further investigation through the
establishment of baseline environmental
condition, comply necessary regulatory
requirements through the identification
of compliance deficiencies and develop
further remediation plans.
Environmental Site Assessment
Phase - II (ASTM E-1903-97 (2002)
Phase II ESA is site-specific and context-
specific. The phase II of ESA determines
the nature and extent of contamination
Phase II environmental site assessment
(ESA) of a parcel of property with
respect to the presence or the likely
presence of substances including but not
limited to those within the scope of the
Comprehensive Environmental
Response, Compensation and Liability
Act (CERCLA) (e.g., hazardous
substances), pollutants, contaminants,
petroleum and petroleum products, and
controlled substances and constituents
thereof. It specifies procedures based on

the scientific method to characterize
property conditions in an objective,
representative, reproducible, and
defensible manner.
Our team of Experts conduct Phase - I
ESA and based on findings of Phase - I,
recommendations are given for
conducting Phase - II ESA. Soil &
groundwater samples are collected from
identified areas to check for
contamination levels of pullutants
depending on the nature of past
operations at the facility. Mitigation
measures are recommended for
remediation of the soil & groundwater
and removal of the potential
contaminants.
Environmental Management System
(EMS) - ISO 14001
There is currently a monumental effort
by countries throughout the world to
establish a Universal Standard for
Environmental Management which affect
all phases of operation. We have
implemented it in many industrial
sectors. Our work methodology for
implementing this Standard comprises of
following steps:
1. Initial Environmental Review Report
2. Environmental Policy Formulation &
Planning
3. Environmental Policy Formulation &
Planning
4. Implementation, Training &
Documentation
5. Internal Audit
6. Application for the Certification
An Environmental Management System
(EMS) is a stepping stone to knowing
your environmental impact and risks
and being able to manage them
effectively. It also produces a positive
economic impact, delivering real savings
and making systems more robust.
II Air Emission
Air Dispersion Modeling
We have been working on air dispersion
molding and have done number of
project in which we have used
industrial source complex (ISC) model.
Air dispersion modeling is the
mathematical assessment of
contaminant impacts from emissions
sources within a study area. Factors

COMPANYPrOFILE
EMC PAKISTAN PvT. LTd. 11
that impact the fate and transport of
contaminants in the atmosphere
include meteorogical conditions, site
configuration, emission release
characteristics and surrounding terrain,
amongst others.
Air Emission Testing
Air emission testing remains
necessary while performing any study
related to air pollution and to find out
prevention techniques. Thus EMC
works in close collaboration with
laboratories where these tests be
carried out.
III Wastewater Management
Wastewater Treatment Facilities on
Turn Key Basis
We have another expertise of installing
Waste Water Treatment Plants of different
types. We can install WWTP having
different technologies like DAF Technology,
Activated Sludge System etc. We have
some satisfied clients whose WWTP are
running and cleaning the waste water
surpassing the local standards limits.
Wastewater Analysis/ Feasibility
Study for Treatment Facilities
We conduct wastewater sampling and
analysis to identify the strength of
wastewater in stream. On the basis of
such feasibility studies we submit our
proposals for wastewater treatment
design to the clients. It helps make us
easy to establish real time data and to
consider all aspects in treatment design.
Our main areas of treatment are
industrial units however; we also intend
to work on municipal wastewater
treatment section.
Self Monitoring and Reporting for
Industrial Wastewater
Industries are liable to produce self
monitoring reports to relevant EPAs as
per the schedule given in the Laws &
Regulations. We also assist our clients in
self monitoring procedures and generate
report which includes findings and results
of self monitoring for the submission to
EPAs.
IV Waste Management
Designing of complete Waste
Management System
We analyze and design complete waste
waste management systems of the
company. Our main Emphasize is on
Reuse Recycle of the Product. We design
and supervise the client in implementing

this management system. We not only
help them in analyzing the problem but
we also prepare procedures and give
training to them on this issue. End to end
can be provided to our customers. Only
one component like making of the
management plan or implementing can
also be done if client requires.
Management of Hazardous & Non
Hazardous Wastes
We analyze the hazardous waste and
suggest the cost effective way of
disposing it off. We also stress on three
R's i.e. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle while
suggesting any solution related to
hazardous waste management. We also
provide services for collection,
transportation and disposal of waste.
While performing these jobs stress is
always on the laid down procedures of
WMC and the client.
Provision of Waste Collection State
of the Art Bins
We can provide state of the art, custom
made bins according to the client's
requirements. These Bins can be from
Stainless Steel to Fibre Reinforced Plastic
(Fibre-Glass) material. The sizes can vary
according to requirement and usage. We
provide them and suggest the collection
procedures. These Color-Coded bins itself
provides segregation at source and does
not require any end-user segregation and
saves time and money.
Research for Reuse - Recycling of
Waste
We put emphasize on research and always
conduct tests on the waste to ascertain
their consistency. In the light of results of
the tests we provide cost effective and
simple solutions to our clients. We have
already provided many such solutions to
our clients who are using their hazardous
waste after recycling it at very nominal
charges. e.g. Reusing of 1-1-1- Tri-
choloro-ethlene (TCE) for degreasing after
recycling, reusing the waste oil sludge as
fuel in Cement Industry etc.
EPA Approval and Our Resources
We are working on it at the moment and
have already submitted an IEE (Initial
Environmental Examination) Report for
our Waste Disposal Facility which is
located outside Karachi towards GHARO
(Sindh). We have all the necessary
equipments available with us including
waste collection bins to transportation
Vans and Pneumatic Pumps with
compressors etc for removal and
transportation of waste safely.

V Processing of CDM Projects
The CDM is the only instrument that is
available for developing countries to
assist them in achieving sustainable
development and contributing to the
ultimate objective of the United Nations
Framework Convention on Climate
Change (UNFCCC) to minimize GHG
emission. It aims to assist annex-1
Parties to implement a project activity
that reduces GHG emissions in non-
annex-1 Parties which are mostly the
developed countries, in return for
certified emission reductions (CERs). The
CERs generated by such project activities
can be used by annex-1 Parties to meet
their emissions targets under Kyoto
protocol. Being the signatory of Kyoto
Protocol Pakistan can benefit from CDM.
The processing of CDM projects is
complex task and almost no or very
little expertise is available in the
country. The EMCs professionals, by
attending various training programs,
national and international seminars
have developed ample expertise in
processing the CDM projects. In
addition the EMC has entered into a
long term understanding with an
international consultant based in
Singapore for processing CDM

PrOJECT: BASELINE STUdY OF KIrTHAr PrOTECTEd ArEA COMPLEX
SCOPE: A comprehensive baseline study was carried by Environmental
Management Consultants for Kirthar Protected Area Complex
(KPAC). The KPAC ecosystem comprises a system of mountains
and valleys. The mountains and valleys are largely wasteland.
The mountains still support a rich variety of plants, mammals,
reptiles, amphibians, fishes and invertebrate species. The valleys
have some 40,000 ha as agricultural land, where natural
vegetation has been replaced by cropland and does not support
rare or threatened plant species. Most of the plants species
present on such agricultural land are cultivated.
The habitats that still support the biodiversity of plant and animal
species are nevertheless face to face with threats from each of
the following parameters:
• Climate Change
• Human population
• Land conversion
• Agriculture
• Over harvesting
• Soil erosion
The loss of biodiversity is however, mainly the result of
impoverishment of resources, which has been induced by:
• recurring episodes of drought and an overall scarcity of rainfall
• Scarcity of surface water and hence over excavation of
groundwater. Climate change has been held largely responsible
for aridity of the environment and desiccation of soil. Additionally
drought conditions and excavation of groundwater from deep down
resources has reduced the availability of water in the root zone of
the plants. This has been going on for decades and that may be the
reason for dwarfing of all the tree species, and for coalescing of the
tree rings, which suggests that the root zone has remained deprived
of its share of water for a considerably long time.
Over exploitation of the already meager resources has now become
the way of life in KPAC since the land area is being expanded for
agriculture. This requires land clearing and the subsequent removal
of vegetation which includes some rare species that are considered
as weeds and of no commercial value.
Water being made available in the core habitat of the wildlife in
particular the large mammals, is being shared by the herds of
livestock whose population has been growing to the extent of being
2 livestock heads per capita.
Availability of green agricultural crops in the land area near the
wildlife habitats has induced the small mammals to encroach on
the agricultural fields. descending of the small mammals to lower
STUDIES
COMPANYPrOFILE

levels has in certain cases prompted the large mammals to descend
to lower levels and thus encroach on others habitat.
The process of land degradation and loss of habitat has been
intensified during the last decade. The plant and wildlife species
are being lost due to i) increasing rate of deforestation, ii) expansion
in its agricultural area, and iii) development activities being based on
greed rather than need.

current provisions and need to introduce the interventions,
2) Prioritize future interventions,
3) Make a comprehensive policy proposal on environmental
compliance by the industry,
4) Analyze requirement of setting up Combined Effluent

Guidance on Cleaner Technologies & Treatment Facilities (Area of Expertise) It is the need of the day to switch to newer and cleaner technology, we at EMC always stress on the cleaner technologies which are green in nature and helps in creating less pollution and are environmental friendly. Cleaner technology includes recycling, renewable energy (wind power, solar power, biomass, hydropower, biofuels),information technology, green transportation, electric motors, green chemistry, lighting, Grey water, and many other appliances that are now more energy efficient. It is a means to create electricity and fuels, with a smaller environmental footprint and minimize pollution. To make green buildings, transport and infrastructure both more energy efficient and environmentally benign. Environmental finance is a method by which new clean technology projects that has proven that they are "additional" or "beyond business as usual" can obtain financing through the generation of carbon credits. A project that is developed with concern for climate change mitigation (such as a Kyoto Clean Development Mechanism project) is also known as a carbon project. While there is no standard definition of "clean technology," it has been described by Clean Edge, a clean technology research firm, as "a diverse range of products, services, and processes that harness renewable materials and energy sources, dramatically reduce the use of natural resources, and cut or eliminate emissions and wastes." It notes that "Clean technologies are competitive with, if not superior to, their conventional counterparts. LTd. 44 CliEnt/loCation: Sindh WildlifE dEPartmEnt - govErnmEnt of Sindh, jamShoro diStriCt – Sindh PrOJECT: BASELINE STUdY OF KIrTHAr PrOTECTEd ArEA COMPLEX SCOPE: A comprehensive baseline study was carried by Environmental Management Consultants for Kirthar Protected Area Complex (KPAC). The KPAC ecosystem comprises a system of mountains and valleys. The mountains and valleys are largely wasteland. The mountains still support a rich variety of plants, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fishes and invertebrate species. The valleys have some 40,000 ha as agricultural land, where natural vegetation has been replaced by cropland and does not support rare or threatened plant species. Most of the plants species present on such agricultural land are cultivated. The habitats that still support the biodiversity of plant and animal species are nevertheless face to face with threats from each of the following parameters: • Climate Change • Human population • Land conversion • Agriculture • Over harvesting • Soil erosion The loss of biodiversity is however, mainly the result of impoverishment of resources, which has been induced by: • recurring episodes of drought and an overall scarcity of rainfall • Scarcity of surface water and hence over excavation of groundwater. Climate change has been held largely responsible for aridity of the environment and desiccation of soil. Additionally drought conditions and excavation of groundwater from deep down resources has reduced the availability of water in the root zone of the plants. This has been going on for decades and that may be the reason for dwarfing of all the tree species, and for coalescing of the tree rings, which suggests that the root zone has remained deprived of its share of water for a considerably long time. Over exploitation of the already meager resources has now become the way of life in KPAC since the land area is being expanded for agriculture. This requires land clearing and the subsequent removal of vegetation which includes some rare species that are considered as weeds and of no commercial value. Water being made available in the core habitat of the wildlife in particular the large mammals, is being shared by the herds of livestock whose population has been growing to the extent of being 2 livestock heads per capita. Availability of green agricultural crops in the land area near the wildlife habitats has induced the small mammals to encroach on the agricultural fields. descending of the small mammals to lower STUDIES COMPANYPrOFILE
  • 48. EMC PAKISTAN PvT. LTd. 45 levels has in certain cases prompted the large mammals to descend to lower levels and thus encroach on others habitat. The process of land degradation and loss of habitat has been intensified during the last decade. The plant and wildlife species are being lost due to i) increasing rate of deforestation, ii) expansion in its agricultural area, and iii) development activities being based on greed rather than need.
