3. Around 25 million other people
throughout the world – 600, 000 in the
United States- make unsuccessful
attempts to kill themselves; such
attempts are called parasuicide.
8. Approximately 107 of every 100, 000 inmates in U.S.
jails commit suicide each year, many times the
national rate.
Like those who have serious illness, these people may
have felt that they could endure no more suffering
and believed that there was no hope for improvement
in their condition.
10. Global suicide rates among adolescents in the 15-19 age
group, according to the latest World Health Organization (WHO) Mortality
Database, were examined. Data for this age group were available from 90
countries (in some cases areas) out of the 130 WHO member states. The mean
suicide rate for this age group, based on data available for the latest year, was
7.4/100,000. Suicide rates were higher in males (10.5) than in females (4.1).

13. Currently, 1 of every 100, 000 children in the U.S kills himself
or herself each year, compared to 7.3 of every 100, 000
teenagers, 14.3 of every 100, 000 young adults, 16.8 of every
100, 000 middle-aged adults, and 16.3 of every 100, 000
persons over age 75.
17. CAUSES:
great stress
depression
low self-esteem
and feeling of hopelessness
but many who try to kill themselves also appear to struggle
with anger and impulsiveness or to have a serious alcohol or
drug problems.
19. As people grow older, all too often they become
ill, lose close friends and relatives, lose control over
their lives, and lose status in our society.
20. Elderly persons are typically more determined than
younger persons in their decision to die and give
fewer warning, so their success rate is much higher .
