What is Schema.org?

The mission of this group is to discuss and prepare
proposal(s) for extending Schema.org schemas for the
improved representation of bibliographic information
markup and sharing. The group will seek consensus
around, and support for, proposal(s) to the W3C
WebSchemas Group. This Community Group will not,
itself, produce technical specifications.

Presented at the CNI Spring Membership Meeting in San Antonio, Texas 4 April 2016. OCLC Research conducted an International Linked Data Survey for Implementers in 2014 and 2015, receiving responses from a total of 90 institutions in 20 countries. In the 2015 survey, 112 projects or services that consumed or published linked data were described (compared to 76 in 2014). This presentation summarizes the 2015 survey results: 1) which institutions have implemented or are implementing linked data; 2) what linked data sources institutions are consuming, and why; 3) what institutions are publishing, and why; 4) barriers and advice from the implementers.

What does success look like when it comes to library discoverability? Index based discovery systems have seen a dramatic rate of adoption since introduction to the research ecosystem in 2009, with more than 9,000 libraries relying on a discovery system to provide users with a comprehensive index to their offerings. Some issues bar the way to providing this comprehensive view, but many challenges have been overcome through collaboration between libraries, content providers and discovery partners. The NISO ODI initiative began to examine these issues in 2011, and released a best practice in June 2014. Speakers will highlight examples of successful collaboration, note continued areas of challenge, and provide insight on how the Open Discovery Initiative Conformance Checklists can be used as a mechanism to evaluate content provider or discovery provider conformance with the best practice.

Eloy Rodrigues, Petr Knoth & Kathleen Shearer showcase the conceptual model for this vision, as well as the role and functions of repositories within this model. Workshop title: Building a global knowledge commons - ramping up repositories to support widespread change in the ecosystem Workshop abstract: The extensive international deployment of repository systems in higher education and research institutions, as well as scholarly communities, provides the foundation for a distributed, globally networked infrastructure for scholarly communication. This distributed network of repositories can and should be a powerful tool to promote the transformation of the scholarly communication ecosystem. However, repository platforms are still using technologies and protocols designed almost twenty years ago, before the boom of the web and the dominance of Google, social networking, semantic web and ubiquitous mobile devices. In April 2016, the Confederation of Open Access Repositories (COAR) launched a working group to help identify new functionalities and technologies for repositories and develop a road map for their adoption. For the past several months, the group has been working to define a vision for repositories and sketch out the priority user stories and scenarios that will help guide the development of new functionalities. The results of this work will be available in the summer of 2017. This workshop will present the functionalities and technologies for the next generation of repositories and reflect on how these functionalities will be adopted into the existing software platforms. In addition, participants will discuss the important implications for the network layers, and how repositories will uniformly interact with the networks to provide value added services on top of their content. The network – evolved by technology – is changing the user's behaviour and that will affect the future of information services. Many envision a possible leading role for libraries in collaboration and community building services. Users are not only heavily using new tools, but are also creating and shaping their own preferred tools. Today's students are incorporating Web 2.0 skills in daily life, in their social and learning environments. Tomorrow's research staff will expect to be able to use their preferred tools and resources within their work environment. Today's ánd tomorrow's libraries should support students and staff in the learning and research process by integrating library services and resources into their environments.

As libraries prepare to shift away from MARC to a linked data framework, new convergences in the metadata production activities of our libraries' technical services units, special collections, and digital libraries are becoming possible. In September 2015, the Canadian Linked Data Initiative (CLDI) was formed to leverage the existing collaboration between the Technical Services departments of Canada’s top 5 research libraries and the Library and Archives of Canada. Working cooperatively, our objective is to provide a path to linked data readiness for our institutions and leadership for the adoption of linked data by libraries across Canada. To achieve this goal, partner libraries are working across departments and institutions to create new workflows and tools and adapt to a new conceptual understanding of descriptive metadata. This presentation is a preliminary report on the progress made in five key areas of interest: digital collections, education and training, MARC record enhancement, evaluation of linked data tools and vendor supplied metadata. Building on existing initiatives, the CLDI is investigating the potential of integrating linked data elements into digitized collections, as well as MARC-based bibliographic and authority records, with the aim of fostering new and interesting pathways for resource discovery. To strengthen and expand the professional knowledge of staff, partner institutions are collaborating in the production of educational and training materials related to linked data principles and practices. The evaluation and potential development of linked data tools is another area of concentration. Finally, with the goal of changing workflows upstream, the CLDI is working to engage publishers and vendors in the linked data conversation. In addition to reporting on the work undertaken in the first year of the project, this presentation will also cover lessons learned and outline some of the new opportunities gained from working on a collaborative project that spans across multiple boundaries. A: Communities curate knowledge by discussing evidence and applying community standards to it. In Wikipedia, 4 questions are used to evaluate borderline articles: Notability – Is the topic appropriate for our encyclopedia? Sources – Is the article well-sourced? Maintenance – Can we maintain this article? Bias – Is the article neutral? POV appropriately weighted? Q: How can information technology help? A: Information technology can organize evidence based on the criteria communities use. In Wikipedia, we developed an alternate interface for deletion discussions.

Integrating Unique Materials into the Global Discovery Network

Living in the time of abundance of information, publications, and social networks is a great opportunity for software engineering researchers. They can find much information about many projects, various relevant publications, and other researchers who did a work on a related topic. Yet, availability of (open source) software freely/publicly available is a great convenience for many. All this definitely opens up many exciting opportunities for a higher-quality and more creative research. However, this wealth causes another (bigger) challenge– how to manage and comprehend all that data and interactions and be able to contextualize the data to the research needs at hand? In this talk, we will discuss a need for the development of new-generation personal information management systems for software engineering research. The key requirement is ubiquitous access, delivery and publishing of research data from “anywhere and anytime.” Through a more organic integration of software engineering tools, publication sources, collaborative and community research tools, researchers should be able to able to build their own personal research environments, which satisfy their personal needs, preferences, formal obligations, and life-long objectives. To illustrate some promising directions for personal research environments, we will discuss different examples built on principles of the Social Web, the Semantic Web, technology-enhanced learning, and computer-supported cooperative work.

Since the early days of e-resource management, holdings maintenance for electronic resources has been a very time consuming and manual process. While the emergence of electronic resource management systems (ERMS) has improved this process to a significant extent, holdings maintenance tasks remain labor intensive due to the increased volume of electronic content to manage, as well as issues related to metadata quality. To ameliorate many of the problems associated with managing electronic resources, and in recognition of a need for greater accuracy and efficiency, some knowledgebase providers are beginning to offer libraries options to automate holdings maintenance for electronic resources. In 2014, OCLC developed a service to provide automated holdings management for a select group of content providers. Within the WorldCat knowledge base system, library specific holdings for e-book and e-serial collections can be managed within the knowledge base without the need for library staff to manually intervene. At the University of Toronto Libraries, we decided to take OCLC's automated holdings management service for a test-drive. For three vendor packages, we conducted an on-going comparison between the library's holdings list and the title listing supplied by the automated service. This presentation will outline the results of this investigation, highlighting the benefits and drawbacks of automated holdings maintenance. Recent changes to Canada’s Copyright Act have propelled copyright and licensed use into the spotlight at Colleges and Universities in Canada. Ensuring that comprehensive information on licensing permissions is displayed to our users is an urgent task. This session will look at three different approaches at Western University, Queen’s University, and University of Toronto regarding the implementation of a licensing permissions workflow using Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL) Usage Rights database (OUR). As electronic serials have shifted from being the exception to the norm, libraries are becoming increasingly reliant on knowledge base driven systems to help manage their electronic resource holdings. In 2011, after over a decade of managing e-serials within a local database, the University of Toronto Libraries migrated its electronic serial holdings to a fully integrated commercial e-resource management system. Now, with two years of experience under our belts, we endeavored to take stock and analyze how our library is coping with e-serial management within this new environment. How accurate are our e-journal holding statements within the ERM? How effective are we at managing e-serial title changes? How well are we tracking journal purchases that fall outside of the big package deals? Throughout this study, we have encountered many of the benefits and pitfalls of managing electronic journals within a knowledge base-driven system. While using a commercial ERM and companion MARC record service has allowed the library to present better data to users and expose previously hidden collections, there are several new challenges that we must contend with in a knowledge base environment. A common issue hindering access to our e-journals is the supply of incorrect, outdated or incomplete metadata within the data supply chain. These metadata problems have a detrimental effect on libraries, and consequently on our users, as it affects the accuracy of our e-journal holdings within our e-resource inventories. Although the study began as an internal investigation of our e-serials management practices and workflows, the results highlight the need for greater standardization within the data supply chain, better communication with publishers and knowledge base providers, and increased collaboration to improve the e-resource management process. Why Schema.org? • Special half-day session to introduce Schema.org and reflect on how it is being approached by those concerned with bibliographic and other forms of domain specific data. • Moderated by Richard Wallis, Technology Evangelist, OCLC • Special guests: Dan Brickley (Google), Charles McCathie Nevile (Yandex), Antoine Isaac (Europeana), Gildas Illien (BnF)

What is Schema.org? • Schema.org is a vocabulary used to describe things on the web. • Aims to improve the web by creating a structured data markup schema supported by major search engines. • Primary usage is for annotating existing Web content. • Schema.org can be considered an approach to Linked Data.

Schema Bib Extend Community Group The mission of this group is to discuss and prepare proposal(s) for extending Schema.org schemas for the improved representation of bibliographic information markup and sharing. The group will seek consensus around, and support for, proposal(s) to the W3C WebSchemas Group. This Community Group will not, itself, produce technical specifications.
