Each year the IT world offers a hype-word. The last decade has all been about mobile, cloud, Big Data and IoT. In the context of cloud apps however, monolithic applications have little to offer in terms of HA and DR and their deployment process is mostly an error-prone operation. Curious enough, even though container have been around for many years, the hype word nowadays is containers (along with microservices), and that’s probably because of Docker, who made containers really easy to use. Throughout this talk, I will cover the importance of containers and what Azure has to offer in terms of containers, namely Azure Container Services. And because deploying a single container isn’t part of the real world scenarios, I will also show you how you can manage (aka orchestrate) an application in the real world. Don’t be fooled by the title though! This session will not be exclusively about Docker, it will be about containers, about Docker images, about orchestrating containerized applications, about Azure Container Service, about deploying ASP.NET Core Applications to Docker Containers in Azure and about configuring release pipelines in Visual Studio Team Services and taking advantage of Docker containers.

In a cloud based environment, where automation is a primary concern, guest operating systems need to be provisioned at boot time. There are a lot of actions that need to be performed at this stage, ranging from assigning the admin user’s credentials to creating WinRM listeners, storage configurations, RDP settings, guest agent installation, custom data execution and much more. The de-facto standard guest provisioning tools are cloud-init on Linux and cloudbase-init on Windows. I will present how cloudbase-init runs on all the Microsoft supported Windows editions (there are quite a few) and how it supports a plethora of metadata service implementations (EC2, OpenStack, the recently added Azure). Cloudbase-init is being run thousands of times daily all over the world’s public clouds and data centers and it has reached more than 5 million known runs to date. We will also take an in-depth look at the Argus integration testing framework, which automates the integration testing of cloudbase-init on real world platforms, to make sure it meets a very strict set of performance, compatibility and security requirements. At the end I will show you a live demo with a cloudbase-init bootstrapped Windows instance on Azure, and how you can benefit from the provisioning process.

As Infrastructure as Code is growing more in popularity, system administrators and devs started writing more and more sophisticated systems code and scripts. Testing code is something that devs have been doing this for a long time while system administrators just started adopting the idea. With the growing popularity of PowerShell, more and more system administrators and devs began to write PowerShell code for provisioning and configuring infrastructure either on-premises or in the cloud, but the biggest problem was that there was no useful framework to test that code when a breaking change occurred. This is the concept of “I ran it, and it worked,” did it now? Enter Pester. Pester is a unit testing framework for PowerShell. It provides a few simple-to-use keywords that let you create tests for your scripts. Pester implements a test drive to isolate your test files, and it can replace almost any command in PowerShell with your implementation. This makes it an excellent framework for both Black-box and White-box testing. In this presentation, you will learn what Pester is, how you can use pester as your daily driver when you’re writing scripts and how you can use Pester to make your life better when change happens.

When projects do fail for reasons that are primary technical, the reason is often uncontrolled complexity. The complexity goes out of hand when the code lacks structure. In large software projects where many developers work on the same code base one of the biggest challenge is to get consistency in code, to create development patterns for common problems, so you can control the complexity and size of the system.
