Improving knowledge and confidence of emergency residents in pediatric resuscitation's through a pediatric resuscitation simulation curriculum

  1. 1. ALERT Presentation: Improving knowledge and confidence of emergency residents in pediatric resuscitations through a pediatric resuscitation simulation curriculum Scott Herskovitz, Maybelle Kou, Sonal Batra Inova Children’s Hospital, George Washington University INSPIRE @ IMSH 2017 – Orlando, FL, USA International Network for Simulation-based Pediatric Innovation, Research and Education
  2. 2. • Pediatric resuscitations remain a rare event in pediatric emergency department let alone general emergency departments. Thus experiential learning is difficult to come by during the course of an emergency medicine residency. In order to supplement the clinical training, simulation medicine adds a unique educational environment to improve knowledge during pediatric resuscitations. International Network for Simulation-based Pediatric Innovation, Research and Education Background
  3. 3. • Population: Emergency medicine residents at George Washington University (GW) • Intervention: implementation of a pediatric resuscitation curriculum • Control/Comparison: oral board case group • Outcome(s): validated multiple choice pre test with post case multiple choice questions and a summative OSCE at completion of curriculum with specific in-situ measures, inservice examination score changes International Network for Simulation-based Pediatric Innovation, Research and Education PICO / Research Question
  4. 4. • 1. Initial needs assessment survey • 2. Development of 3 pediatric resuscitations w/ knowledge test of validated questions to mirror cases according to PALS/ABEM requirements • 3. Pre test knowledge assessment by GW • 4. Implementation of curriculum over 6 months • 5. Post-case assessment of knowledge and summative OSCE at completion • 6. Follow up pediatric specific in-service exam scores International Network for Simulation-based Pediatric Innovation, Research and Education Approach / Design
  5. 5. • ALERT Presentation 1/28/17 • Grant Proposal (applying for institutional grant) • IRB Submitted 10/31/16 (pending approval) • Recruitment / Data Collection 2/1/17 • Data Analysis 7/1/17 • Abstract Presentation (NA) • Manuscript Preparation (NA) International Network for Simulation-based Pediatric Innovation, Research and Education Timeline
  6. 6. 1. What in situ simulation measures should be obtained? 2. What other general data can be measured to assess the simulations? 3. Should knowledge assessment pre/post use PALS questions PEER IX or both? International Network for Simulation-based Pediatric Innovation, Research and Education 3 questions to improve study
  7. 7. At INSPIRE @ IMSH 2017: obtain feedback on study design In 2 weeks: start study implementation International Network for Simulation-based Pediatric Innovation, Research and Education Goals to accomplish
