2. Background
• Debriefing is a critically important component of
simulation-based education
• Some simulation programs utilize more than 1
instructor for facilitating debriefing (eg. IPE) –
“Codebriefing”
• Little is known about codebriefing: current practice,
barriers, ideal methods

3. Research Question
• What is the current practice and state of co-debriefing
in pediatric simulation programs around the world?
– How often is it done? Who co-debriefs?
– What approaches / frameworks are being used?
– What are the barriers? Strategies for success?
– What are the important aspects of an effective co-debriefing?
– What do facilitators require to help improve the quality of codebriefing?

4. Approach / Design
Phase 1:Needs
Assessment
Survey
• Online Survey distributed to INSPIRE
membership
• Content: current codebriefing practice, barriers,
perceived needs
Phase 2a:
Qualitative Study:
Current state of
codebriefing –
Focus Groups
• Select INSPIRE members who
codebrief for focus group
• Thematic analysis
Phase 2b:
Qualitative Study:
Current state of
codebriefing –
Video Review
• Select INSPIRE sites who
codebrief to video sample of
codebriefing
• Thematic analysis
Phase 3:
Development of
New CoDebriefing
Framework
• Pilot Testing at Select
INSPIRE sites
Phase 4: Empiric
Study / RCT

5. Timeline
• Ethics submission – Feb 2014
• Ethics approval – June 2014
• Survey Dissemination – July to Sept 2014
• Data Analysis – Oct 2014
• Manuscript Preparation – Nov to Dec 2014

6. 3 Questions to improve study
1. What is the process for survey dissemination via the
INSPIRE network?
2. How many INSPIRE sites currently engage in co-
debriefing, and would be interested in phase 2/3 of
the project?
