3. Definition of Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy uses anticancer drugs that may
be given intravenously(IV) or by orally. The
drugs travel through the bloodstream to reach
cancer cells in most parts of the body.
4. Uses of Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is used as a cancer treatment for a
variety of purposes:
ďą To provide cancer treatment and cure a
specific cancer.
ďą To control tumor growth when cure is not
possible.
ďą To shrink tumors before surgery or radiation
therapy.
ďą To relieve cancer symptoms.
ďą To destroy microscopic cancer cells that may
be present after the known tumor is removed
by surgery.

ďąThe type of cancer.
ďąThe stage of the cancer(how far it has spread).
ďąThe patientâs age.
ďąThe patientâs overall health.
ďąOther serious health problems(such as heart, liver
or kidney diseases).

ďąIntramuscular chemotherapy.

7. Side effects of Chemotherapy
As well as killing cancer cells, chemotherapy can
damage some healthy cells in the body. Such as blood
cells, skin cells and cells in the stomach. This can
cause a range of unpleasant side effects.
ďąFeeling tired most of the time.
ďąFeeling sick and vomiting.
ďąHair loss.
ďąA sore mouth
ďąDry, sore or itchy skin
ďąLoss of appetite
8. Side effects of Chemotherapy
ďąDiarrhea or constipation.
ďąCognitive and mental health problems.
Many of these side effects can be treated or prevented
and most, if not all, will pass after treatment stops.
