SEED SYSTEM IN GHANA
GHANA WORKING GROUP

General Goal of YIIFSWA
• The general goal of YIIFSWA has been:
to increase yam productivity (yield and net
output) by 40% percent of 200,000 small-holder
yam farms (90% with less than two acres) in
Ghana and Nigeria in five years and deliver key
global good research products that will
contribute to the longer term vision of
improving yam productivity and livelihoods of
yam dependent farmers..
3. A member of CGIAR consortium www.iita.org
• Strengthen small-scale farmer and trader
market linkages, particularly in less accessible
producing areas, to realize
benefits from improved ware yam
productivity and market demand.
• Strengthen capacities and empower small-
holder farmers in the yam value chain.
• Establish sustainable availability of high quality
seed yam on a commercially viable and price
competitive bases in targeted areas.
Initial Objectives

Cont.
• Reduce postharvest losses and improve
product quality.
• Develop technologies for high ratio
propagation of high quality breeder and
foundation seed yam.
• Evaluate and scale out yam production
technologies with improved and local
popular varieties. Identify more effective
prevention and management tools and
strategies for pests and diseases.

What is the Demand ?
• GLDB would take seed from Breeders
• 4 Commercial seed growers would take
seed from GLDB (2000 FOR ALL)
• Farmers would receive seed from
commercial farmers
• NGOS would take seed from GLDB and
supplement that from commercial seed
growers
8. A member of CGIAR consortium www.iita.org
Who are the Suppliers?
• GLDB = 10000tubers (80% QDS and
20% Breeder Seed)
• CRI = 5000 tubers of releazed varieties
• 13000 tubers of QDS
• 1000 plantlets
• SARI = 700 tubers
9. A member of CGIAR consortium www.iita.org
Key Strategies
• Look at what we have and fast ruck their
certification
• Multiply what the breeders have
• Dr. Otoo to make available Dente and
Afebetua for multiplication by GLDB
• Dr. Chamba and Dr. Otoo should gather
information on QDS available and prepare
them towards releaze
10. A member of CGIAR consortium www.iita.org
Key Strategies
• NGOs to get 6500 QDS tubers from Dr. Otoo,
and 8000 tubers from GLDB
• GLDD would multiply 5000 pre- basic
released seed. (to be obtained from Dr. Otoo)
• Released varieties of 2000 tubers to be given
to commercial seed growers by GLDB for
multiplication (to be followed up by PPRSD)
• Dr. Marian Quain would make available 1000
plantlets to Dr. Otoo

Key strategies
• GHANA ACTION GROUP FOR FORMAL
SEED YAM SYSTEM
• (a five member Committee to follow up
discussions at this meeting for
implementation)
12. A member of CGIAR consortium www.iita.org
Projections
• CRI = 42000 pre- basic seeds in 2016
(10000 releazed ; 32000 QDS)
• SARI = 200 pre-basic seed through vine
cuttings
• 4 Commercial seed growers would
multiply 2000 tubers of releazed varieties
• GLDB = ?
