6. My tips (feel free to ignore!)
⢠Treat career as a journey
⢠Accept it may not be linear
⢠Identify skills gaps
⢠Assess Opportunities
⢠Don't be 'sticky' - don't Say 'yes' to
everything
⢠Talk to people
⢠Think beyond the job title
Leeds University - BA Hons Mgmt Studies - not just a degree but life experience
Enjoyed various elements of course - decided to take some time out
Camp Beaumont - gave me experiences to talk about in interviews, e.g. conflict, difficult situations, getting the best out of people, teamwork
See every job as an opportunity
Ready for the next challenge
When I started wanting more (or 'I could do that' or 'that looks interesting/good')
Curve Balls thrown in along the way
Log what you do, people you meet, experiences you have
Thought I'd start in a job and just move up, but it's not like that in life
More experience when I've actually taken a different lower paid job which I've then built on
Always think about what you enjoy and where your skills can add value - BA skills are valuable and extremely useful in every job!!! especially the personal ones!!
Treat your career as a journey, identify the end goal or mini goals along the way you may make sideways and even downwards moves as well as upwards;
Identify your skills gaps and use these to assess opportunities
donât say yes to everything decide how much effort / energy you will apply depending on the benefit or impact;
Look at opportunities in terms of exposure (internal and/or external), experience, skills development, knowledge;
Donât be âstickyâ just taking on more and more until you are overloaded because they are âgood opportunitiesâ â you will probably have to stop doing some things in order to create space to
Talk to people to establish what their career goals and gaps are â they may welcome an opportunity to do work that helps you so that you can create space for yourself as well as giving them experience = win/win J;
Think beyond the job title (that is only what HR have decided the job should be called) â every person who does that job has that title â it doesnât describe you as a person or what skills / experience you could develop or enhance by doing that job.
