3. Context
 Europe and India share a rich heritage of association.
Amongst the first countries to establish diplomatic
relations in early 1960s.
 Similar water challenges but vary in nature and magnitude.
 EU and India both face water quantity and quality issues
 Per capita average annual renewable water resources in India is
about 1500 cu m, making it a water stress country
 India is looking for solutions for sustainable management
of its river basins to provide water security for its growing
domestic, agricultural and industrial sectors.

4. Emergence of water partnership
 First, Indo-European Water Forum
was organised by EC in association
with NWM in November 2015.
 The forum highlighted Europe
approach to RBM with positive
results in Danube and Rhine basins
with implementation of WFD.
 Both sides were convinced that
there is a lot to learn from each
other:

 Experience sharing (including
technologies)

5. Work to set up the water partnership
 A series of meeting involving
EUD, EU MS, and MoWR, RD
& GR took place to fine tune
various aspects of
partnership.
 Study visits to the EU
 Declaration on India-EU
Water Partnership was
adopted on 30th March 2016
at EU-India Summit in
Brussels.

innovative technologies for
