“Make TU Delft a showcase for multidisciplinary climate research”
The Geomatics Synthesis project
Our goal:
Help building a fundamental framework which will support
multidisciplinary climate research in the campus.
Our objectives:
“Provide the tools to measure and model the climate in the campus“

6. Urban Climate
What is (urban) climate?
Depends on:
o size
o location
o activities
o stage of development
o…
Example: the energy balance depends on
changes of chemical content of the area, CO2
emmision of cars, changes reflection (energy
fluxes) of landcover, etc.

7. Stakeholder requirements
Stakeholder activity Climate parameter of Requirements on 3D

CCC organization All climate parameters Extensible 3D environment

urban objects and their
thematic properties
Heat simulations Trees, surface properties Storage of surface
parameters and trees.
Shadow analysis on trees
and buildings
Wind simulations Trees, porosity of tree Ability to insert and extract
canopy, building geometry buildings or trees from the
model
People tracking and comfort Trees, surface properties, Continuous tracking of
level temperature people for mobility research

8. Result: Paper UDMS Workshop
Measure the Climate, Model the City
• E. Boufidou, T. J. F. Commandeur & S. B. Nedkov
• MSc Geomatics, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands
• This study involves the set-up of an extensible framework, able to
store and handle 3-D representations and thematic properties of the
built environment as well as regional climate parameters which vary
in space and time. To this end, the computer modelling programme
CityGML has been used and extended to allow the storage of climate
parameters.
• The campus of the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) will be
the test bed for such an application, and the current study contains
the procedure and the results of a student project within the
Geomatics MSc programme at the TU Delft.

9. Geomatics Synthese Project
Peer evaluation
• During the project, two self-evaluations and two peer reviews
have to be held, i.e. they are compulsory. The project tutor will
draw your attention to these evaluations, and how to access
them.
• Final Individual Grade:
• Group Grade
• Individual Grade
• The tutors also check the consistence of this grading with the
peer evaluation results.

11. Student A about B:
Midterm
• Technical: 3
• Commitment: 3
• Attitude: 1
• Initiative: 2
• Management of Resources: 3
• Communication: 3
• Lack of motivation. No participation in group brainstorm sessions.
No creative input. Not a team player. Wants to be told exactly
what to do, no own input. Demotivates fellow group members.
11
12. Student A about B
Final
• Technical: 3
• Commitment : 2
• Attitude: 1
• Initiative: 2
• Management of Resources: 2
• Communication: 1
• Rather poor team member.. didn't contribute anything intellectual
to the project. His first and often only contribution to a
discussion: "there is no time left" and "it's too complicated". Also,
waits till others come up with ideas and input. He cannot work
without a recipe. Even though he says to be open to critical input
he never accepts it. Has all kinds of responses at the ready.

13. Student B about A
Midterm
• Technical: 4
• Commitment : 4
• Attitude: 3
• Initiative: 4
• Management of Resources: 3
• Communication: 3
• Needs to get a more on top view of the project, set more
effectively deadlines etc..
13
14. Student B about A
Final
• Technical: 4
• Commitment : 2
• Attitude: 2
• Initiative: 2
• Management of Resources: 3
• Communication: 1
• Works very hard but on his own island, does not inform other
team members about meetings with actors. Unfortunately grumpy
all day, makes other people feel useless in the project group.

18. Ervaringen & aanbevelingen
• Scorion is een nieuw systeem
• Aanwijzingen en hulp noodzakelijk bij opstarten
• Invullen van formulier is voor student veel werk
• zelfevaluatie
• (n-1) mede-studenten
• 5 competentiegebieden
• Job performace; attitude; leadership; management of resources;
communication
• 5 beoordelingen
• excellent; good; satisfactory; marginal; poor
• Student heeft voorkeur voor eenvoudige excel-sheet
• Overzicht, cijfers i.p.v. rangvolgorde
18
19. Ervaringen & aanbevelingen
• Voor student: veel scroll en aanvinkwerk
• Verlies van overzicht
• Vergelijking moeilijk
• Is deze student op dit competentiegebied beter dan de ander?
• Beoordeling:
• Meetschaal: ordinaal
• satisfactory; poor; marginal; satisfactory; satisfactory
• Gemiddelde: ???
• Becijfering: interval
• Verhouding heeft betekenis: 3, 1, 2, 3, 3
• Gemiddelde = 2.4
• Spreiding
19
20. Ervaringen & aanbevelingen
• Pentagram diagram in Scorion is onjuist
• Zelfde score, maar andere volgorde competenties biedt ander beeld
• Gemiddeld cijfer per student zegt niet zo veel
• Is afhankelijk beoordeling van hele groep per competentiegebied
• Groepsgemiddelde voor ‘motivatie’ = 3, dan is groep ongemotiveerd.
• Internationale groep
• Nederlander: eerlijk / ‘bot’, dus van ‘poor’ tot ‘excellent’
• Chinees: iedereen is gelijk, dus iedereen even goed
• Commentaar is veel belangrijker dan cijfer
• Alleen zichtbaar voor student, of ook voor tutor
