The
Information-Connectivity System (ICS)
currently developed in FP7 project IC-IC
Enhancing interconnectivity of short and long
distance transport networks through passenger

⢠Involving the airport regions of Amsterdam,
Frankfurt, Paris and Vienna
Developing an ICS (InfoConnectivity System)
⢠focussing on airlines, and public transport modes connected to airports
âInfo-Connectivityâ is the concept of
enhancing interconnectivity of short- and
long distance public transports by providing
information when needed by travellers
3. 3 Oct 2013 3ICS, V3IIID
Information provision via the ICS
The ICS provides
currently missing information travellers
need on facilities and services for their
next immediate travel-stage and/or
transport (e.g. finding the way, lost
items, health care, security, immigration,
customs, check-in, connecting transport
& ticketing).
Much can be provided in waiting
situations (e.g. in airport train/bus,
airport lounge, in the airplane before
arrival.

Information provision via the ICS
â â
Information on the next immediate
stage of the are provided by the ICS
⢠prior to upcoming tasks
⢠closely relating to the travellerâs
situation
⢠catering for a sudden need for
information
⢠taking into account low working
memory of persons travelling and
the high complexity of the task
5. 3 Oct 2013 5ICS, V3IIID
ICS Goals
⢠increase interconnectivity of short- and
long distance public transports modes
⢠reduce car use for travelling to the airport
This way, the ICS helps to:
⢠reduce implied uncertainty associated
with use of public transport
⢠foster the use of public transport by long-distance travellers
⢠de-escalate traffic chaos at peak-times on the way to and at airports
⢠keep travellers at ease, allowing for additional consumption
⢠improve the travel experience and
reduce stressâ â
6. 3 Oct 2013 6ICS, V3IIID
There are two defined traveller journeys, consisting of
six "stagesâ a traveller needs to pass through.
Where to provide ICS information
Journey 1, âTakeoffâ, headed towards onward air travel
ICS information could be provided
along the stages of this journey by
various (analogue & digital) media:

Expected results
The development of the ICS in IC-IC focuses on
a) the improvement of
currently existing traveller
information systems
b) to provide information not
covered by currently existing
traveller information systems
Facilitated by the ICS
Handbook
Facilitated by an ICS app as the
constant traveller-companion
11. 3 Oct 2013 11ICS, V3IIID
Will describe in detail the benefits and implementation
criteria of the ICS, proposing improvements for the
current systems of information provision.
Recommendations are grounded
on identified information
shortfalls.
Expected results: ICS Handbook
The ICS Handbook
Improving currently existing traveller information systems:
12. 3 Oct 2013 12ICS, V3IIID
Expected results: ICS mobile App
The ICS App
Providing information not covered by currently existing traveller
information systems
Wherever the current system can not compensate for shortfalls
on information provided to travellers via suggested handbook
updates, the ICS app will fill these information gaps.
Using smartphones, which can capture or
connect to information via
⢠QR (Quick Response) codes,
⢠NFC (Near Field Communication), or other.
Automatic language translation software will
be employed, provide information in up to
14 languages.
