Today’s challenge – a need for near real-
time analytics
Timely access to relevant information has always been critical
to business success. Thousands and thousands of companies
and institutions use SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse
(SAP NetWeaver BW) as the cornerstone for business
intelligence in their SAP application landscapes. However,
query performance has often been a challenge. The traditional
approach was to build and maintain aggregates and to tune the
queries. In many situations the use of SAP NetWeaver BW is
limited to a relatively low number of power users as well as
predefined reports. Today, more than ever, companies need
instant insights to run their business and spread the use of SAP
NetWeaver BW to many more users. They need a solution
that delivers insight at orbit speed along with universal
scalability. Near real-time analytics have become a “must
have” and IBM and SAP have the ideal solution at hand.

  • 4. 4 IBM and SAP Global Alliance Taking SAP NetWeaver BW Accelerator scalability to the next level: Project “Jupiter” 1.2 TB / h By leveraging the pre-defined standard configurations from 101,000 reports / h 25 TB IBM, customers quickly realize the benefits from their initial 4.2 sec SAP NetWeaver BW Accelerator installations. Since many 37 M records large SAP NetWeaver customers show a tremendous growth in the number of SAP NetWeaver BW users and business data 1.1 TB / h volumes in the tens to hundreds of terabytes, the capability of a Total DB Size 101,000 reports / h 15 TB solution to scale economically becomes a critical proof point. 4.2 sec In response to this challenge, IBM and SAP ran a Proof of 22 M records Concept codenamed “Jupiter” at the IBM Poughkeepsie industry solutions stress test center in Q4 2007 to address this 0.6 TB / h issue. The project Jupiter results, independently audited and 100,000 reports / h 5 TB validated by WinterCorp, delivered the proof points for the 4.5 sec 6 M records solutions ability to smoothly scale from smaller installations to Validation by WinterCorp high-end configurations for more than 25 TB of SAP 27 blades 81 blades 135 blades NetWeaver BW InfoCube data, while achieving remarkably BW Accelerator Resources consistent fast response times and excellent throughput figures KPI Legend: (see graphic on the right).
