Humana People to People - The Schools for
                                    Children



The Street Children Schools are day schools for children, who have
dropped out of the ordinary school system to get another chance to
catch up and they are boarding schools for the children without a home.
That is why these schools carry the name “Street Children’s Schools”. In
Angola and Mozambique they are called “The Schools for the Busy Ants
of the Future”, placing the children into the future of their respective
countries. One of the core values of the schools is that they encourage
the children to be active in their own education.

The main activity is following the national curriculums in primary and
secondary education of children. For many of these children it is an
effort to keep up a stable life where they come to school every day and
where they participate in the activities after lessons.

The schools co-operate with the social welfare departments of the
local authorities. They support children and families in the back-to-
school campaigns, whether the campaigns are run to cover up for the
consequences of war or for the consequences of the AIDS epidemic.
Special programs to secure that girls go to school and are kept in school
are also part of the Street Children’s Schools’ programs.

The schools are open throughout the day, and there are more activities
taking place than lessons. The children can participate in sports activities
and train for competitions arranged with other schools. They prepare
theatre plays that they perform in the community. They learn art skills as
a possible way to earn a living; they do community service and junior
vocational training. The adults come to the school in the evenings for
literacy classes and to improve their school level. In this way the schools
serve as community centers where they are.
