A detail analysis of Klopp's Liverpool in 2018/19 season.

2. SYSTEM OF PLAY AND
CHARACTERICS OF THE TEAM
- Liverpool FC under Klopp plays very direct and aggressive
football with very high-intensity.
- The most of the time the basic shape of the team is 4-3-3, but
this formation is transfmorming during the game.
- They played a lot of games in a 4-2-3-1 system also.
- This bacis shapes of the team always are transforming when
the team is attacking.
- When they build up the play with the goalkeeper in the first
zone, usually, the two central defender are going wide and
the central midfielder is dropping down between them. The
fullbacks are moving higher on the field in line with the two
offensive midfielders. So, the system transforms from the
basic shape 4-3-3 in 3-4-3.

3. - When the ball is in the second zone, the team is positioned in
a 4-1-2-1-2 system in a way that they create romb in the
midfield with Firminho dropping between the lines. Salah and
Mane are forward in the line with the defensive line of the
opponent searching passes in the space because of their elevate
velocity. Also, with this positioning of the team the fullbacks
have free space to go forward and participate into the actions.
- Into the third zone the formation of the team is 2-5-3 with the
two fullbacks deep into the opponent’s half and the wingers
and the striker inside. The right and the left midfielder are
going wide like a false fullbacks in order to push the fullbacks
in more advanced position because they are players that are
capable to make an assist with crosses.
- When the team formation is 4-2-3-1 the transformation is
different into the third zone. The wingers are coming inside
between the lines into the half spaces and the fullbacks are
pushing deep into the opponent’s half in line with the wingers.
The system transforms in a very open 2-2-6 shape.

4. - When they are defending in a 4-3-3 shape they have very
good pressing with man marking, covering passing lines and
space. The objective of Liverpool’s pressing is to force the
central defenders to play the ball to their midfielders.
- After loosing the ball like every team on a high level, they
press immediately in order to recover it fast(defensive
transition).
- When the team is defending in the sezond zone, they are
defending in zone(zonal defending).
- They have very good offenisve transition also, because of the
elevate speed abillities of Mane and Salah.
- They are very organised during the set-pieces. They have a
lot of combination for korners and lateral free kicks. A very
dangerous team in this segment of the game also. They defend
the korners in zone and with man-marking.

Very passionate and highly respected
coach. His team is playing open attacking
football with very high-intensity. During
defensive phase(pressing, zonal defending
and defensive transition) his team is very
aggressive. With the ball they like to play
more direct to the opponent’s goal in order
to put pressure into the final third. He is a
modern, sophisticated coach who knows
the value and the importance of the
relationship with the players. Jurgen is a
coach who likes to addapt the style of
playing to the abilities of his players in
order to take the best from them.

20. ● Creating 3(+1) vs 2 situation (numerical
superiority) at the back
- When the opposite team is playing in a 4-4-2 system, they
create numerical superiority at the back against the two strikers
in order to eliminanate them and progress the action into the
next phase. The two central defenders are open wide and the
central midfielder dropps down between them to offer a passing
solution. The fullbacks are going higher in order to pull the
opposite wingers with them.

23. ● Creating 4(+1) vs 3 situation(numerical
superiority) at the back
- When the opponent’s team is pressing high in the first
zone with three players, Klopp’s Liverpool will create also
numerical superiority in order to build up easier from the
back and progress the attack into the second zone. The two
central defenders will be open wide and the central
midfielder with one of the offensive midfielders will dropp
between them. The fullbacks are positioned high and wide
on field.

26. ● The offensive midfielder opening on the
side like a false fullback
- In order to be free of marking the offensive midfielder will
dropp on the side to receive into the free space between the
central defender and the fullback. The fullback will go higher
on the field in order to drag the opposite winger with him to
open space for the midfielder to receive and create.

30. - If the opposite winger decides to follow the movement of
the offensive midfielder, then the fullback will be free of
marking and a open solution for receiving the ball.

31. ● Transforming in a 4-1-3-2(romb in the
midfield) system from their 4-3-3 basic shape
The positional game during the build up of the play in the
second zone:
- The offensive midfielders are positioned into the half-spaces
between the lines and aim to receive there in order to
progress the actions forward
- The central forward is dropping down behind the back of
the opposite central midifelders to create a diamond in the
midfield and numerical superiority against the opposite
midfielders(3vs2)
- The wingers are keeping depth
- The fullbacks are open wide

35. ● Creating a romb and numerical superiority
with the central forward
- This positioning in the midfield creates numerical superiority
in the middle when the other team is playing with two central
midfielders. The forward dropps back behind the back of the
central midifelders and aspires to receive between the lines. The
offensive midfielders are positioned between the opposite
central midfielder and winger searching the ball there in order
to progress the action forward, usually to the wingers.

37. - The central forward positioned behind the back of the two
central midfielders of the opposite team. The two offensive
midfielders are positioned between the players and between
the lines providing a passing solution to the central defenders
with objective to receive there to breake the opposite midfield
line and to progress the action into the final third.

44. ● Recognizing the moment and creating 2
vs 1 situation against the opponent’s
central midfielder
- When they have the ball, the central forward is dropping
back and with one of the midfielders they create 2 vs 1
situation against one of the opponent’s central
midfielders(or the only one). The players know very well
to read and recognise the situation.

47. ● The wingers are making runs into the
channels and searching the ball in the space
behind the back of the fullback
- The winger is positioned between the central defender and
the fullback. From that position he makes a run into the
channel between them and searches the ball in the space
behind the back of the fullback.

49. - This is the build up of the goal against Arsenal. In the
second half Klopp changed the system to 4-4-1-1. When they
are attacking the fullbacks are open wide and the wingers are
inside positioned into the halfspaces. Robertson(LB) has the
ball and Mane(LW) is making a run into the channel between
the opposite fullback and central defender in order to find the
ball into the space behind the back of the fullback. From there
he sent the ball into the box and Milner scored.

55. - If the central defender decides to follow the winger, the
out-positioning of the central defender can easy produce a
gap between the two central defenders. In this gap can pass
a key pass(an assist) for goal to the other winger if he is
good positioned(between the central defender and the
fullback) like in this situation.

56. ● The offensive midfielder exploating the
free space created by the winger
- The winger is searching the ball in the space and is making
the run(the movement) between the fullback and the central
defender. On this way the fullback must to follow him in
order to close him if he gets the ball. At that moment the
offensive midfielder will search the ball in the free space
made by the winger’s movement.

58. ● Exploating the free space behind the back
of the opposite fullback
- Very important thing for this pattern to work is the opposite
fullback to follow the movement of the winger inside, then he
will leave available space behind his back that the fullback or
the central forward can take advantage of it with making a
run and searching to receive the ball into the free space.

61. - Mane(LW) moves inside, the right fullback follows him,
Fabinho(CM) gives him a pass and waiting for the back pass
in order immediatelly to finds Roberston(LB) in the
available space behind the back of the right fullback.

62. ● The third(hidden) man concept
- This concept is very common in the play of the world-class
teams. The third man allows to find the free, hidden man in
the play who has time and space to progress the action
forward. I say hidden man because, usually the passing line to
him is covered and the ball can arrive to him by the other
player. This combination is very dificult to defend or intercept
because, the natural behavior of every player is always to look
the ball and not to cover the possible solution in this kind of
situations. With this combination you can breake lines and
take out of play opposite players.

67. ● Searching the free player via the link player
- This concept and combination requeres good perception of
the situation in order to know which opposite player attacks
the player with the ball and has left his player free of marking.
So, the player with the ball must to find the link player if the
line of pass to the free player is closed in order the ball to
arrive to the free player.

71. III ZONE

72. ● Transforming in a 2-5-3 system into the
final third
- When the team is into the attacking third they are
positioned in 2-5-3 system. The two offensive midfielders
are open wide on the side between the central defenders and
fullbacks. The fullbacks are in more advanced position. The
three men in front are positioned inside and occupating the
space around the box. One of the main reason why they
have scored so many goals by crossing the ball into the box
is because this positional play into the final third allows
them to have the wingers and the central forward inside the
box participating into the finalisation of the actions.
Sometimes they can have even four players in the box with
the arriving of one of the offensive midfielders or the
fullback.

77. ● Transforming in 2-2-6 system into the
final third from the basic shape 4-2-3-1 into
the second zone
- Sometimes Klopp will start the game or can change the
system during the game in 4-2-3-1 system with Firminho like
an offensive midfielder and Salah in the position of the central
forward. Mane and Keita or Shaqiri on the sides. When they
are dominating the opponent in the attacking third they are
positioned in very offensive and open 2-2-6 shape. The two
fullbacks are going very high on the field in line with the
wingers and the offensive midfielder. The two wingers are
occupating the half-spaces between the lines and aim to
receive the ball there. This shape into the final third also
allows the team to have many players in the box participating
into the finalisation of the actions.

79. - Liverpool started the match against City with their typical
4-3-3 system. In the second half they changed the system in
4-2-3-1 with Salah in front and Firminho behind him.
Wijnaldum on the left and Mane on the right. Henderson
and Fabinho like a two central midfielders. So, this system
into the final third transforms in 2-2-6 shape with the two
fullbacks going very high. This was their 2-2-6 shape when
they scored the equalieser. This shape allows the team to
have three men in the box or four with the fullback arriving
on the second post like they did it against City.

80. ● Long diagonal ball from the central
midfielder to the fullback in the assist zone
- When the opponent is positioned deep in their own half,
near their own goal, Klopp’s Liverpool has a pattern play in
order to breake the block. Against Crystal Palace and Red
Star, teams that play in a 4-5-1 system when they are
defending, Liverpool played 4-2-3-1 but, the system is
transforming in 2-2-6 into the third attacking zone. This
positional play into the final third allows the fullbacks to be
very deep into the opponent’s half and the wingers inside
between the lines into the half-spaces. So, when the left
central midfielder has the ball he tries to reach the right
fullback into the assist zone with a long diagonal ball, then
the fullback wants to assist to some of the players in the box.

82. - This well trained pattern worked very well against
Crystal Palace and they have scored the fourth goal on this
way. Shaqiri(RW) was positioned inside between the
lines(haf-space) and then dropped back with objective to
receive. Milner(RB) made a forward run searching the ball
into the assist zone. There he finded the long diagonal ball
from Fabinho(CM) and returned the ball to Salah who has
finished the action with a goal.

84. - Liverpool’s 2-2-6 system into the final third. The both
fullbacks are very deep into the opponent’s half positioned
in the same line with the wingers and the offensive
midfielder and central forward. The positioning of the
wingers inside makes the opposite fullback to be
concentrated on him and to mark him when the ball is on
the opposite side of the field. So, the fullbacks can take
advantage of the free space and on the fact that the opposite
fullback is occupated with the winger inside.

85. - Liverpool’s 2-2-6 system into the final third. The both
fullbacks are very deep into the opponent’s half
positioned in the same line with the wingers and the
offensive midfielder and central forward. The positioning
of the wingers inside makes the opposite fullback to be
concentrated on him and to mark him when the ball is on
the opposite side of the field. So, the fullbacks can take
advantage of the free space and on the fact that the
opposite fullback is occupated with the winger inside.

86. ● Chip balls behind the back of the defensive
line
- When the opponent block is positioned very low and the
whole their team is positionied in the defensive third
Liverpool has created a pattern play that helps them to breake
the low block and create a goal opportunities. The midfielders
will search the wingers(Mane and Salah) with a chip ball
behind the back of the defensive line.

87. - This is build up of the goal against Manchester United. The
defensive line of Manchester United is positioned very low
near the own goal. In situations like this when the opponent
defend in his first third the wingers will make runs behind the
defensive line in order to meet the ball around the penalty
area.

91. ● When the winger has the ball on the flank
- When the winger has the ball on the flank the central
forward will give him two solutions:
- making a run behind the back of the fullback or the central
defender
- if the winger go inside with the ball, he plays one-two
combination with the central forward

92. - This is the creation of the first goal against Fulham. Mane
has the ball on the flank and Firminho searches the ball
behind the back of the fullback. Mane passes the ball to
him and runs toward the goal and receives a back pass
from Firminho.

94. ● Firminho is arriving in the box searching
the ball around the penalty area
- Because of the role of false 9 during the build up of the
play, Firminho almost never is positioned in the box waiting
for the cross. Instead he is arriving from the second line in
the box. He searches the ball around the penalty area. The
wingers Mane and Salah will pull the central defenders with
them in order to create space for him.

96. - This is the goal against Red Star. Firmnho is arriving in
the box from the back around the penalty area. So, in the
moment of the cross or the moment before, he is not
staying in the box, he is arriving in the box.

97. ● The connection between Arnold(the
right-fullback) and Salah
- When Salah is positioned centrally like winger or like
central forward and Arnol has the ball on the side they can
understand each other very well. Arnold knows to find
him with a diagonal ball behind the back of the central
defenders and to put him in a goal situation.

99. DEFENSIVE PHASE
● Defensive basic shape
- The team of Klopp in most of the time defend in 4-3-3
system. Sometimes when they play with the 4-2-3-1 system,
they defend in 4-4-1-1 shape. Sometimes in the last part of
the game Klopps know to defend with 4-4-2 with Salah in
front in order to use his velocity for offensive transitions.
The team is very compact and aggressive in defending.

108. ● Zonal defending
- In the second zone or in the defensive third Liverpool
defend in zone in a 4-5-1 transforming from 4-3-3 or in 4-4-
1-1 transforming from the 4-2-3-1. Every player attacks the
opposite player with the ball in his own zone with
objective to not time and space on the player with the ball
to think and create and to force him to play backwards.
The players from his left and right side protect his back
and cover the lines of pass by creating a triangle. Liverpool
is very good in zonal defending, because the players are
very aggressive.

116. ● Pressing
- Liverpool are team that are very good in this segment of
the game. They are very aggressive during the pressing and
very fast and dangerous during the offensive transition
once they get the ball. They like to press high on the field in
the opponent’s half in order when they get the ball to be
close to the opponent’s goal and to take advantage of the
velocity of the wingers. The team is positioned in 4-3-3
system. The wingers are positioned in the spaces between
the opposite central defender and fullback and the forward
between the central defenders. The pressing starts when
one of the winger decides to attack one of the central
defender by clossing the passing line to the fullback. The
central forward will close the passing line to the central
midfielder diagonally positioned from the central defender
with the ball in order to force the the central defender to
play inside to the central midfielder on his side who will be

117. attacked aggressively by one of the midfielders in the
middle. That is main objective of their pressing to force the
central defenders to play inside where the midfielders must
to receive with their back toward their own goal. In that
moment and part of the field Liverpool’s midfielders are
very aggressive and strong and they want to steal the ball
there and to play immediately pass forward to their very
fast wingers who are already positioned into the free spaces
between the central defender and the fullback. If they do
that usally they will have numerical superiority in the
offensive transition against the two central defenders or
against the two central defenders and one of the fullbacks.
In the transition participate the front trio and one of the
midfielders. If the ball goes to the other central defender in
the moment of passing the ball the other winger will attack
the central defender and arrive there in the time of
controling the ball, so he will be forced to play back to the
goalkeeper.

118. - Salah(RW) is pressing the central defender with the ball
by closing his solution to the fullback. Firminho(FOR) is
closing the passing line to the central midfielder further.
Wijnaldum(OM) is marking the central midfielder on his
side. Mane(LW) is ready to press the central defender on
his side if the ball is going to him.

to play inside vertical pass to the midfielder who is with the
face toward his goal. Then to press him in order to win the

ball because of their pressing game. The team against Red
Star was defending in a 4-4-1-1 system. Always, the main
objective of Liverpool’s pressing is the wingers to force
the central defenders to play a inside vertical pass to their
central midfielders. Because, the midfielder of Liverpool
are very aggressive and can win a lot of balls in the
middle. If they win the ball there, they are practically one
pass away from a goal opportunity.

123. ● Defensive coverage on the midfielders
- Liverpool’s midfielders are players that play in the both
ways. They are hard working players. Always, when the
opposite winger has the ball on the flank and 1 vs 1
situation against the fullback, one of the midfielders will
come to provide support and create numerical superiority(2
vs 1) against the winger. If the fullbacks of the other team
goes forward to provide support for his winger then with
the coming of Liverpool midfielder there will be numerical
equality(2vs2) instead of numerical superiority for the other
team. In this particular situation. The midfielder will go on
the player with the ball(the winger) and the fullback will
accept the opponent’s fullback who is coming from behind.

124. - The winger has the ball on the flank and 1 vs 1 situation
against the fullback. Henderson(OM) comes to provide
support to his fullback creating 2 vs 1 situation and
cutting the option on the winger to dribble inside.

126. - The right winger of the other team has the ball. The
midfielder comes to provide support on his fullback and to
close the option inside to the winger. When the fullbacks of
the other team decides to go forward and provide support to
his winger, the midfielder suggest to the fullback to take the
fullback who is coming from behind and he will cover the
player with the ball. With this coverage on the midfielders
they don’t give the opponent to create 2 vs 1 on the flank.

128. ● Positioning on the defensive line on long
balls / aerial duels
- On long balls every defeneder goes to jump in his own
zone. The other defenders are dopping down to secure his
back and to protect the space behind in case of second
ball.

132. ● Pass backwards means the defensive
line must to step out
- When the opponent’s player plays a backwards pass this is
a sign for the defensive line to step out and cut the space.
Before some of the opponent’s player receives the ball, the
defensive line must to stop the forward movement in order
to be ready for the next possible combination of the other
team.

135. OFFENSIVE TRANSITION
- In this segment of the game Liverpool is very dangerous
team. Because, they can press very well and win the ball
high on the field. The midfielders are very aggressive and
the wingers are very fast, so they can exploit the free space
behind the defensive line or the 1 vs 1 situations. Once they
win the ball they aspire to play a direct pass forward
towards the wingers(who are already positioned into the
transition zones between the central defender and the
fullback). Because of the way they do the pressing after
winning the ball, they already have their wingers in front
of the ball. So, in the offensive transition participate three
or four players. Usually, they have numerical superiority(3
vs 2 or 4 vs 3) and they want to take advantage of that.

140. DEFENSIVE TRANSITION
- Liverpool is a team with a fantastic defensive transition.
The players have great character and mentallity, they have a
habit to press very aggressive in the moment of loosing the
ball in order to win it back fast. They can be very dangerous
when they win the ball back into the opponent’s half. They
scored couple of goals(the second against Barcelona, the first
against Red Star) when they won the ball after they have
lost the possesion into the opponent’s half. This moment of
the game can be very dangerous, because you win the ball
back deep into the opponent’s half near their goal and you
can easy create goal opportunities.

144. SET-PIECES(OFFENSIVE)
- Liverpool is a team that is very organised in this segment
of the game. They take it very serious like a very
important part of the game. In order to take advantage of
the offensive set-pieces they have a lot of combination
very well trained. They participate with five-six players in
the box and two players outside the box for the second
ball. One or two players are staying behind on the center.
● Korners
Combination 1
- When the korner taker shows one hand that means he
will cross the ball on the first post. So, Van Dijk or Matip
are going to the space in front of the first post to find the
ball.

145. Combination 2:
- All the players that are in the box are positioned in front
of the goal on the first post. They make the goalkeeper to
can not step out for the ball because of too many players in
front of him. The cross goes on the first post.
Combination 3:
- Short combination in order to make the players who
defend the space(not man-marking) to step a little bit up
and the cross goes to the second post for Virgil van Dijk.
Combination 4:

158. ● Lateral free kick
- On lateral free kicks they participate with five players in
the box and two outside of the box positioned in order to
win the second ball. If the player who will take the cross
shows one hand that mean that the cross will go on the first
post.

- If the lateral free kick is from the left side and Milner is
around the ball, that means that he will play a short pass
for Arnold(right foot) to shoot on the goal. Arnold is not
around the ball, he is behind like he is not interesting in
participating.

161. ● Central free kick
- When the foul is more centrally on the field and more far
from the opponent’s goal they have a combination to cross
the ball on the second post for Virgil van Dijk. The other
players in the box are following the action and are
expecting that Virgil will finds the ball and give it back in
the area in front of the goal.

- When the foul is centrally, but more close to the box they
also have a combination. One player from behind makes a
run towards the assist zone. The ball goes to him and the
other players in the box are attacking the zone in front of the
goal expecting the back pass from him.

164. ● Center
- On the beginning of the first or second half, when they
are taking the center kick, the ball goes to right central
defender and he plays a long diagonal ball to the left side
of the field. The team is orientated to the left side, waiting
for the second ball.

166. SET PIECES(DEFENSIVE)
- Klopp’s Liverpool are defending the korners in zone and
man on man marking. Four or five players are positioned
in line on the five meter line protecting the space in front
of the goal. Two or three players are in front of them
marking opposite players. Two players, usually the
wingers are positioned around the box for the second ball
and to be in more andvanced position in case of a counter-
attack to take advantage of their velocity. If the korner is
from the right side and the korner taker is right-footed
then the four-five players on the five meter line are
positioned in a digonal line towards outside of the box.

defend. One player is staying in the wall. One player is
positioned between the wall and the players protecting
the line of pass in case the cross is low. Seven players in
zone are in position to jump. One player, usually, the
fastest in the team like Mane, Salah or Shaqiri are
positioned in front of the seven player for the second
ball.
