3. Their excuse for spending their money
(parents or bank loans) is that they can never
fully embrace the language without fully
experiencing the country. So they’ve traipsed
off to the beaches in Thailand or soaked up
the sun in Brazil – all in the name of
education. While you’ve been working over
the holidays, they come back to university and
show you pictures of them in some exotic
country.

5. They sport clashing looks and outfits, have a
huge collection of berets and bowler hats and
can be counted on to entertain students on a
dreary day in campus. But if you’re thinking
that they’ll break into a dance and sing like
the cast from Glee, you’ll be disappointed.

7. They could talk till the cows come home and
because they’re always on the lookout for
stories, they can seem like they’re prying!
They’ve always got a camera round their necks
and are up-to-date with the latest apps. Watch
out for those grungy-looking appearances and
National Geographic vests and trench coats.

9. They work hard and spend long hours in the
university. The campus is their playground and
the student union is their local pub. They’re
popular and everyone knows them. If there’s a
pub quiz, they’ll hog the front tables and
whisper in quiet tones, taking those quizzes as
seriously as their final exams! If you’re lucky,
you might hear their own little group chants!

11. They never seem too stressed and take
things as they come. They snub at high
street stores and everything mainstream.
They’ve got some favourite vintage store,
an underground club they hang out in and
are always having a little artsy debate.

13. They’re normally very well dressed, always
have something smart to say and could argue
that the earth’s flat (if they had to!).
Approach them only if you’ve got something
clever to contribute.
