What we know:
⢠We know our staff have been facing increased pressures on their health and wellbeing for a
significant period of time and the impact of COIVD-19 has magnified some of these pressures.
⢠There is an emerging evidence base that our staff are struggling with physical, mental and
emotional health and wellbeing.
⢠The heart of the NHS People Plan (2020-21) puts supporting the health and wellbeing of our NHS
people as the most important priority for us.
Letâs take a longer term viewâŚ
Cultural shift toward wellbeing and prevention:
⢠There is a balance to be struck between providing a reactive support offer and a preventative,
proactive approach which supports staff before they become overwhelmed and / or unwell.
⢠This approach will require a cultural shift in how the health and wellbeing of our people is
supported. Leaders and managers need to be empowered to create a âwellbeing cultureâ and it will
require services that support our people including wellbeing and occupational health to rise to the
challenge.
Collaborative system-wide working:
⢠We have worked closely with systems to review the need in their local areas for a combination of
preventative support and direct intervention in a holistic way.
⢠Through the development of an enhanced wellbeing and occupational health offer we hope to provide
a bridge between preventative support, early identification and intervention and specialist support to
ensure our staff feel safe, cared for and listened to.
#Caring4NHSpeople #ProjectM
17. A focus on the longer-term: HWB Service Transformation
Our ambition is to create a âwellbeing cultureâ that empowers
our NHS people to maintain and improve their health and
wellbeing, to feel cared for by the NHS, and to be empowered to
pass that care onto our patients.
ď§ The 14 systems piloting the
enhanced offer will cover an
estimated c.800,000 Health
and Care People
ď§ This is estimated to be 45%
of our NHS workforce

28. Looking after your own wellbeing
Create a wellness action plan (WAP)
Everyone can complete one, you don't need to have
a mental health problem in order to feel the benefits.
It just means that you already have practical steps
in place to ensure you are supported when you
aren't feeling great.
We spend a lot of time looking after other people
â we need to think about what we need to look
after our own wellbeing, too.
#Caring4NHSPeople #ProjectM
29. Ideas of things to include in a Wellness Action Plan (WAP)
(source: Mind)
⢠What helps you to stay well? How might you make sure you integrate those things into your day, for example
scheduling time for something you enjoy
⢠What are your triggers (the things that negatively impact your wellbeing)? This could be feeling out of control with a
heavy workload, or getting too tired.
⢠What are some early signs that tell you that you need some wellbeing support? (for example, difficulty concentrating,
prioritising work tasks)
⢠What are things that your manager and/or colleagues could do to help support you? (this could be encouraging you
take a proper lunchbreak)
You donât have to share your WAP with anyone â it can be a useful way
to check-in with yourself. If you would like to share your WAP with
someone, such as your line manager or a colleague, include a note
about how they can use this to support you.
Regularly review your WAP and tweak it as necessary. Things change
all the time, and your needs will change too.
#Caring4NHSPeople #ProjectM
30. Looking after your teamâs wellbeing
⢠Keep an eye out for changes in behaviour.
For example, if colleagues are engaging less in
calls or chats.
⢠Encourage them to create their own wellness
action plan.
⢠Remind them of the support that is available on
people.nhs.uk
⢠Very often, what people need most is a chat,
but it can be difficult to know what to do for the
best. Thereâs some great advice in this graphic.
