1. Danish monarchy, the oldest in the world
DINAMARCA
The Danish monarchy is a unique institution. A Royal line of 50 Kings and two Queens is a
world record dating from more than a thousand years ago, when King Harald founded the
Kingdom of Denmark. The Danish monarchy throughout its history, from the Viking Kings
to modern constitutional monarchy, has had an almost mythical ability to adapt to the social
and political changes of the centuries. This has been the Crown which has preserved this
small country on the tip of the European continent ahead of wars, revolutions, reforms and
foreign invasions. Crown kept the Kingdom together. It was, and is, a purely personal
relationship between the individual monarch and the population.
