Curriculum

Benefits
•This process provides the curriculum department with insights into the current state of curriculum,
identifying gaps to the desired state of curriculum.
•Providing feedback on classroom visits and the materials review helps to chart the course for curriculum
writing and implementation, citing strengths, needs, and recommendations.
Needs assessment
• Is a systematic process for identify gaps between what “is” and what “needs to be”
• Needs assessment is a part of planning processes, often used for improvement in individuals,
education/training, organizations, or communities.
Needs Assessment Includes
 All the proposed models share needs assessment
 There is no agreement on the position of needs assessment in curriculum.
 Not limited to development of curriculum (but includes) the curriculum implementation.
 Curriculum ‘needs assessment’ is a pluralistic process.
 Curriculum needs assessment is a flexible process.
 Only way to specify and the only way to determine some expected objectives.
Purpose of Need Assessment for Curriculum Development
1. Highlight curriculum expectations
2. Gather information about what students know and can do.
3. Motivate students to learn better.
4. Motivate and encourage teachers to meet the identified needs of students.
5. Provide evidence to tell how well the students have learned.
6. Obtain feedback that helps teachers, students and parents make good decisions to guide instructions.
• } Demographics (gender, age, race/ethnicity, geographic location) and intervention setting (school or
organization).
• } Risk and protective factors for substance abuse.
• } Substance abuse problems, including knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors.
• } Institutional information (e.g., drug policies, approval process for use of new educational materials,
available resources).

Benefits •This process provides the curriculum department with insights into the current state of curriculum, identifying gaps to the desired state of curriculum. •Providing feedback on classroom visits and the materials review helps to chart the course for curriculum writing and implementation, citing strengths, needs, and recommendations. Needs assessment • Is a systematic process for identify gaps between what “is” and what “needs to be” • Needs assessment is a part of planning processes, often used for improvement in individuals, education/training, organizations, or communities.

Needs Assessment Includes  All the proposed models share needs assessment  There is no agreement on the position of needs assessment in curriculum.  Not limited to development of curriculum (but includes) the curriculum implementation.  Curriculum ‘needs assessment’ is a pluralistic process.  Curriculum needs assessment is a flexible process.  Only way to specify and the only way to determine some expected objectives.
  • 4. Purpose of Need Assessment for Curriculum Development 1. Highlight curriculum expectations 2. Gather information about what students know and can do. 3. Motivate students to learn better. 4. Motivate and encourage teachers to meet the identified needs of students. 5. Provide evidence to tell how well the students have learned. 6. Obtain feedback that helps teachers, students and parents make good decisions to guide instructions.
